"...I didn't do that," Colbie said, startled. She stuck her head out into the hall, looking around, and braced herself as the second explosion rocked the building. Which is when she heard people running and shouting about the Winter Soldier.
"Change of plans," she grunted, giving Maya just enough time to get her shoes on before herding her out the door. |
Maya just nodded and followed Colbie. Colbie was her senior, and assigned to look after her and the baby, so Maya trusted her.
Meanwhile Barnes was seeing just how much havoc he could wreak on the Hydra base. He knew the building well enough, so he was able to slip in and start causing mayhem. He wasn't certain who already planted the explosives, but he could definitely work with them. |
Steve wasn't far behind him, also working on wreaking havoc. Because he didn't mind doing that to Hydra, not at all.
Colbie managed to get them out without much fuss, and only a few bodies left behind. |
Maya slipped out with Colbie, disappearing with her as soon as they were clear of the base. She wasn't sure how they'd managed to sneak past the Winter Soldier, but somehow they did. She was a bit pale by the time they were a safe distance away, however.
Barnes didn't stop until the base was well and truly incapacitated. He wanted to raze the place to the ground, but he restrained himself. |
Colbie stopped and fussed over her, looking her over.
"We'll rest for a few minutes here," she said. "And I may have a tracker on me." Steve stepped up next to Bucky. "Looks pretty clean now," he muttered. |
Maya nodded, leaning against her a bit and closing her eyes.
"I'll be okay soon," she murmured. "Just--a little sick. I'll check you for a tracker in a bit." Barnes nodded, looking around. "You can call in your buddies at Shield whenever you want," he replied quietly. |
"No rush yet," Colbie soothed. "Take your time." She rubbed Maya's back gently.
Steve nodded. "Still got track of the girl?" He asked as he pinged Shield. |
"I'm useless as a field agent like this," Maya murmured, eyes still closed. "I guess that's why they took me off of field assignments immediately." She took a few slow, deep breaths, and then cautiously opened her eyes. "I think I'm alright now."
"Yeah," Barnes replied, checking the tracker. "Still got her." |
"Good." Colbie straightened again, scanning the area. "Wait here." There was a gas station with a little store attached directly across the road. Colbie darted in to get them a few supplies, starting a bag. She was sure she'd end up with more later, but it would do to start.
"Good. We'll wait until someone gets here for clean-up, and then we'll go." Steve kept looking around, in case anyone was stupid enough to get up again. |
Maya nodded and waited for Colbie to get back. She kept an eye out, though, just in case.
Barnes nodded, but he honestly didn't think anyone would try anything stupid. They all knew who he was. |
Colbie jogged back over to her with the bag.
"Once we get closer to the city, we'll be able to change our clothes," she muttered. "For now, though, can you see the tracker?" It didn't take too long for someone to show up, and once Steve knew things were well in hand, he nodded to Bucky to lead the way again. |
"Hold still," Maya murmured. She checked Colbie over quickly, and managed to pull something off of her with a soft 'aha.' "Found it."
Barnes nodded and headed towards the tracker signal. Time to round up the asset, and hopefully her charge. |
Colbie nodded and plucked it out of her fingers. She wrote a quick note, stuck the tracker to it, and herded Maya away again.
Steve followed after him, fairly unconcerned. Stark's tech was good, after all. |
"Where are we going now?" Maya asked as they hurried away from where Colbie left the tracker. "It will be easier to disappear in the city, but not necessarily easy to find a place to stay for a while, especially since we probably want to look at nicer places."
Barnes followed the signal to where it stopped, and glanced around. He was practically on top of it, and he didn't see the girl. When he spotted the little note and the tracker, he swore softly in Russian. |
"The city first. There are places we can stay, at least for a few days." Colbie glanced back at her. "We will need supplies before we try to disappear entirely."
Steve picked up the note, frowning. Thank you for your help, but my asset and I will be fine from here on out. "Well. That wasn't what I expected." |
Maya nodded once.
"Right," she said. "I can help. People are more likely to take pity on me and give us things, right now." "I should have expected it," Barnes growled. "Time away has made me soft." |
Colbie nodded. "Once we get to the city," she agreed. She figured they would have some time, at least, before the Soldier caught their trail again.
"Hey, Buck, you couldn't know," Steve said. "There was no way to know she'd do this." |
"Let's go, then," Maya said, nodding.
"I should have foreseen it," Barnes disagreed. "I would have done the same in getting rid of the tracker." |
Colbie headed with her into the city, looking for a suitable place to claim for a few days so they could take stock of themselves and gather supplies.
"You also didn't have an ally," Steve pointed out. "She didn't get it off on her own. Her ally, her asset, is an unknown." |
Maya followed, keeping pace easily for the moment. She was going to be glad to have a place to rest for the night, though.
"We can't confirm she has her asset with her," Barnes argued, shaking his head. "We'll act as if she does, but we don't know for sure." |
Colbie settled down earlier than she normally would have, because ensuring Maya's safety was still her primary mission.
"This is good enough," she said, glancing around the old storefront she'd chosen. It had obviously been abandoned for years. Steve tapped the note. "Why would she specify if she didn't have her asset with her?" he said, shaking his head. "They got out together, and I doubt they'll split up now." |
Maya glanced around, and then nodded.
"Good enough," she agreed. She would have liked an actual bed, but she'd slept in worse places before. Granted, not since her pregnancy had started, but the baby was still small enough that she could handle a makeshift bed for a few nights. "We need to find them," Barnes said after a moment. "They can't be allowed to roam." |
Colbie nodded and set things up to be as comfortable as possible, for Maya at least. She had slept in much worse conditions, and she didn't want to put undue strain on Maya.
"Agreed." Steve let out a breath. "Alright. What do you think they'll do? They probably don't have much with them." |
"We definitely need a proper meal in the morning," Maya murmured as she settled in. "Skipped dinner. Can't afford to skip meals with the baby."
"They'll acquire supplies," Barnes replied, glancing around. His eyes fell on the convenience store. "There. They'd have gone there, and then headed for the city." |
"I will ensure we have plenty of food," Colbie assured her. "For now, you need to rest." She settled down in a spot where she had good sight lines to every exit.
Steve nodded. "Probably get more supplies tomorrow?" he guessed. "Start gathering things up, probably get some clothes too." |
