"He was just a kid," Aurora mumbled into his shoulder. "A little kid."
"Steve and I came on foot," Bucky said quietly. "You want me to carry you back, or wait for your sister and take the car?" |
"I know, sweetie, I'm so sorry," Steve murmured, holding her a little closer.
"Wait." Reilly swallowed and settled a little, watching him. |
Aurora just cried more, clinging to him.
"Alright," Bucky said. He held a hand out to her, offering comfort again. |
Steve hushed her gently and rocked them a little, still petting her hair and rubbing her back a little.
Reilly took his hand quietly, holding tight. "Not saying I forgive you yet," she muttered, still watching him. |
Aurora's sobs gradually tapered off.
"I want to go home," she murmured, still not letting go of him. "That's alright," Bucky said, squeezing her hand gently. "You don't have to, yet. I can wait." |
"Alright," Steve agreed. "Let's get you home, then. Did you drive?"
Reilly stepped in closer to him again, though she didn't lean. She just kind of settled there near him because it made her feel better. |
"Yeah," Aurora murmured. She fished around in her pocket for the keys. It took her a couple of tries to grab them.
Bucky gently pulled her in closer, putting an arm around her. |
Steve took the keys carefully. "Do you want me to drive you home?" he asked carefully. He would, he absolutely would, but he wasn't sure she would want him to.
Reilly let out a shuddery breath and her shoulders dropped again as she relaxed. |
Aurora bit her lip and nodded. She didn't trust herself to drive them home, not at the moment.
"Come on," Bucky murmured, nudging her slightly. He'd kept half an ear on the other two up until now. "I think Steve's going to drive, let's head back." |
Steve nodded. "Alright," he agreed quietly. "Come on, let's get you in the car." He kept one arm around her, though.
Reilly nodded, taking a deep breath and heading back to their car. She Did Not Look very hard at the burned patch of earth where the little girl had been. |
Aurora just stayed tucked under his arm, cuddled close.
Bucky kept himself between Reilly and everything else, just gently bundling her into the car when they got to it. |
Steve got her settled in the passenger seat, fussing over her for a moment before he went around to the drivers side.
Reilly settled in cautiously, relaxing slowly when nothing else happened. She leaned her head back against the seats, suddenly exhausted. |
Aurora just curled up in the seat and waited for Steve to get into the car.
Once Reilly was settled, Bucky got into the car next to her. "We'll get you home and comfortable," he murmured to her. "I'll be there as long as you need." |
Steve got in and started driving, keeping half his attention on her. Really, it was quiet enough he barely had to pay attention to traffic.
Reilly nodded, closing her eyes and leaning against him just a little. |
The trip back to the girls' place was short. Bucky kept an eye on Reilly the whole time, making sure she was okay. As soon as the car was parked, he was out of it and around to her side, helping her out of her seat.
|
Steve parked and then went around to get Aurora out. He actually just picked her up out of the car, because she was looking really not good and he couldn't not right then.
Reilly let Bucky help her, and she fumbled her keys out of her pocket to unlock the door. |
Aurora tensed a little when he picked her up, but didn't protest. She just settled herself against his chest and let him carry her inside.
Bucky gently took the keys from her. "Which one?" he asked softly. |
Steve held her carefully, some of the tension leaving his frame as he held her. This was better.
"Leopard print," Reilly told him, not even fussing when he took over. |
"Got it," Bucky said, picking the right key and unlocking the door. He ushered her inside, straight up to the one he knew was her room.
|
Reilly didn't object, just going straight to her room. She didn't sit, because she didn't want to get blood on her furniture, but instead started fighting with her boots standing up.
Steve, meanwhile, took Aurora straight back to her room. He stood her up carefully, keeping his hands on her. "Shower?" he suggested. "Might make you feel better." |
Bucky just gently stopped her hands.
"I've got it," he said, kneeling down and untying her boot laces. Aurora looked a bit torn. Yes, a shower sounded good, but she didn't particularly want to be alone yet. "I just-- I need to get out of these clothes," she said. |
Reilly took a deep breath and nodded. She rested her hands on his shoulders for balance as she lifted one foot.
Steve eyed her for a moment before he nodded. "Jacket first," he murmured, moving to slide it off her shoulders. |
Bucky gently slid the boot off for her, setting it aside. Then he worked on the other one.
Aurora nodded and let him take her jacket. Her shirt underneath was liberally splashed and streaked with both dirt and blood and was already starting to dry and stiffen. |
Reilly let him get both boots off before she undid her jeans with shaking hands. She needed to be out of them.
Steve debated for a moment before he gently started pulling at her shirt. "This as well?" |
Bucky could see her hands shaking.
"I can do that for you," he offered softly. "If you want me to." Aurora nodded, already trying to get the shirt off. Her hands kept fumbling with it. |
