Reilly blinked at him. "Huh. World War Two." She paused for a moment. "I don't know that I've ever come across vamps that old."
"We're not exactly ancient," Bucky pointed out. "Bet you could find some guys still alive who fought in that war. Stevie and I have both met older before."
"Right," Reilly agreed. "But the people still alive who fought in the war don't look nearly so good." She smiled a bit. "And older vamps are the ones that don't attract attention, thus why I've never met any."
"We didn't attract attention, either," Bucky pointed out. "We got tripped over taking care of the ones that did."
"You also came to us," Reilly pointed out. "Without us knowing the truth, true, but you came to us."
"After we had met when you were out hunting," Bucky countered. "Revenants, remember? And somehow, I got a taste of your blood that night, and I knew I had to find you again."
Reilly was quiet for a couple minutes as she processed that. "So how does that work?" she asked quietly. "You... knowing?"
"I... don't know," Bucky admitted. "It's hard to put into words. It's like I tasted it, and suddenly the world stopped spinning, and all that mattered was finding you, because suddenly you were everything that mattered."
Reilly blinked at that and slowly turned red. "That's... intense," she murmured. "Seems rather impractical, you didn't know me at all."
"I know it doesn't make sense," Bucky said. "I promise, I know. But that's how it happened."
"Huh." Reilly considered that for a few minutes, nestling in a little closer to him. "Okay."
Bucky raised an eyebrow, but held her closer.
"You're alright with that?" he asked cautiously. |
"I don't know about alright with, but there's not much I can do to change that. And it's not... bad necessarily. Just kind of a shock." Reilly shrugged a bit.
Bucky nodded in understanding.
"Take your time," he said. "I can wait until you're more okay with things." |
"For right now, I just want to not worry about things. For a bit." Reilly sighed, closing her eyes.
"We can do that," Bucky murmured, pulling her close and just holding her.
Reilly settled in there, just trying to relax for a little while. She ended up staying pretty much attached to him for most of the day.
Aurora just stayed with Steve, only venturing out of her room once for something to nibble on and a bottle of water. She felt safer with him there, and she didn't feel much like leaving his side quiet yet.
"Are you okay staying here for so long?" she murmured to him later. "You don't need to... go?" |
"I'm fine," Steve told her. "Don't have anywhere else I need to be." He smiled and brushed a bit of hair out of her face.
"Just tell me if you need to leave," Aurora murmured. "For... any reason." She wasn't quite ready to say the word 'feed' aloud."
"I'll let you know," Steve promised. Although he wouldn't have to, not for a while. For now, he was fine with just spending time with her.
"Alright," Aurora murmured. She cuddled closer to him. "Thanks. For... staying. And everything."
"Don't worry about it," Steve murmured. "Just take as long as you need." He held her a little more securely, settling in again.
Aurora was able to ignore things for a little while longer. And then her phone went off, alerting her to a text from her cousin.
"That's Tony," she murmured, reaching over and feeling around on her side table for her phone. "Need to see what he wants." |
Steve shifted to give her easier access to the side table. "Anything going on?" he asked once she'd had a chance to take a look at her phone.
