Again, Coulson let her go at her own pace, making notes. He waited until she was done to nod and remove his ear protection.
"Well done," he told her. |
Valerie grinned a bit and took off her ear protection.
"Not the best you've seen, but not bad?" she asked. |
"Yes," Coulson agreed. "Better than the last batch of junior agents trying to rank up that I oversaw." He shot her a small smile.
"I would say I trained with Harry," Valerie said, "but really it was Eggsy. And Roxy, Roxy is a surprisingly good shot."
"I've heard good things about both of them," Coulson agreed with a small nod. "They sound like good agents."
"They are," Valerie said, nodding. "Some of the best." She surreptitiously tried to get a look at his tablet. "So... did I pass?"
Coulson easily shifted the tablet out of the way so she couldn't see it. "This wasn't a pass/fail, this was a placement," he told her. "And I have an idea for you, but I have to run it by the director."
"It could have been pass/fail," Valerie pointed out with a bit of a grin. "If I'd been bad enough at any of it."
"If you had, I'd have written to Merlin to ask what he's been putting in that tea that vanishes this side of the pond," Coulson told her dryly.
Valerie couldn't help but laugh a bit at that.
"Well, is there anything else?" she asked. "Do I have to spar with anyone?" |
Coulson shook his head a bit. "If that becomes necessary, we'll deal with it," he told her. "But the job I have in mind won't require too much hand-to-hand."
That made Valerie pause for a moment.
"A desk job, I take it," she said. She nodded once. "I can do that, that's no problem." |
Coulson smiled at that. "There will be some desk work, yes," he agreed. "I know you have paperwork with Kingsman, so you should be able to pick up that part of it fairly easily."
"Paperwork?" Valerie echoed, raising an eyebrow a bit. "Okay, I can roll with that. I'm pretty good at wrangling paperwork." She suspected that it would be much, much more than paperwork, but she also suspected she wasn't going to get a straight answer out of Coulson about it.
Coulson smiled. "It'll take me a day or two to verify your new position officially," he told her. "Until then, I suggest you read through the SHIELD manual and guide. Oh, and actually read the Agent Barton Guide."
"I'll have you know I did read it," Valerie said, grinning a bit. "Callie made me read it before we made the switch."
"Good." Coulson nodded his approval of that. "I'll have more materials for you to read through, but until I get your position finalized, you have a bit of free time. A day or so at the most."
Valerie nodded.
"Sounds good," she said. "Then I'll go see about relaxing for a little while. Callie's probably waiting for me to call, anyways." |
Coulson nodded. "Let me know if she needs anything from here," he told her.
"Will do, sir," Valerie said, nodding. With that, she headed out to settle into her sister's apartment for the rest of the day while she waited for her placement. Once she got there, she pulled out her phone to check and see if she had any messages before she called her sister.
Callie was in a similar position, just kind of waiting for the verdict. She did pick up as soon as she saw the call.
"They haven't kicked you out or shunted you entirely to paperwork have they?" |
"They put me in your apartment, does that count?" Valerie asked as she settled on her sister's couch, suit jacket already off and shoes neatly by the door.
"No, not even remotely," Callie said with a grin. "I'm not surprised they gave you my place, SHIELD doesn't have a lot of employee housing."
"Unlike the Round Table," Valerie replied, grinning a bit. "Anyways, how was your testing?"
"I think I did pretty well," Callie said. "I know I impressed Merlin with my shooting. They put me up against Harry goddamn Hart for unarmed combat." She made a face.
