Lucy kept the others down until Jean could restrain them. Then she relaxed a bit and immediately turned her attention to Mavin and Connor.

"Are you both okay?" she asked in a murmur.

"I'll be fine," Mavin murmured, already turning around to see to Connor. He still had her jacket over his head, and he coughed a little bit as she tugged it off to see his face. She scooped him into her arms once she was sure he was alright, even though her arms were still trembling a little. Connor hid his face against her shoulder.

Lucy eyed them for a moment before she located Storm and got the keys to a car.

"We're going back to the mansion," she murmured to Mavin. "Come on. There's a car not far that we're using."

Mavin nodded and followed Lucy, steadfastly ignoring the pain rippling through her.. She couldn't afford to break down, not yet. Not until Connor was safe at the mansion. She bundled him into the car when they got to it, and then got in next to him. Her teeth were clenched tightly in pain.

Lucy settled in the front seat and started driving them back to the mansion. She was focusing on driving and keeping herself calm, which is why she didn't notice Mavin's pain until they were practically back to the mansion. Then she started pinging the professor only a little desperately, parking rather haphazardly and hopping out to help Mavin and Connor.

The Professor felt Lucy's pings and had already sent Hank out to meet them. The incident had already been all over the news, so he already knew something had happened.

Mavin was doing what she could to keep Connor calm and quiet. The boy was obviously shaken, and he was clinging to her as much as he could. She had one hand near him, for him to grab, but her other was balled up tightly and her arm was pressed to her middle. Her breath was starting to come short as the pain steadily got worse, but she managed not to make a sound yet.

Lucy got Connor out first. "Connor, sweetie," she murmured, smoothing over the rough edges as much as she could, "I need you come with me, okay? We need to make sure you weren't hurt." She glanced back at Hank and nodded to the car, so he'd get Mavin.

Hank nodded and moved to the other side, opening the door to get Mavin. "Can you walk?" he asked quietly, mindful of Connor still nearby.

"Aunty Lucy," Connor whimpered, clinging to her.

"Maybe," Mavin said. She got out of the car, stumbling a bit and closing her eyes momentarily against the pain. She steadied herself and opened her eyes again.

"You'll be okay, sweetheart," Lucy murmured to Connor, holding him close and carrying him inside. "C'mon, let's go see Miss Jean."

Hank held out a hand to steady her, giving her a quick once-over. "What happened?" he asked, offering her his arm to take her inside.

"It was an attack," Mavin said, accepting Hank's hand as she stumbled again. "Some sort of gas. I think I breathed some of it when I tried to keep it from getting to Connor."

"Hm." Hank helped her inside and downstairs to the medical area. "Lie down, please." He went to get some machinery ready so he could get a better idea of what exactly the gas was doing to her.

Mavin just nodded a little and fell onto the medical table with a groan. She managed to flop onto her back, but didn't move after that. It hurt to just breathe.

Hank wasted no time in getting everything set up and starting to look her over. "Well," he murmured, "this is interesting." He watched on a screen as her insides shifted and resettled as whatever was happening swept through her body. "This will prick," he warned her, getting a very small skin sample to test.

Mavin barely even noticed the prick as a wave of cramps washed through her, and she whimpered through clenched teeth.

"Hurts worse than when I had Connor," she said once the pain eased again.

Hank made a noise of acknowledgement, already getting some other machinery ready.

"I have good news and bad news," he told her while he looked at the imaging of her insides again.

"Tell me," Mavin said, curling up on her side as another wave of pain washed over her.

"The good news is it's not actually harming you," Hank told her, still observing. "The bad news is I'm not certain what it is doing."

Mavin didn't immediately respond. A wave of pain crashed over her again, and she curled up with a thin whimper. She dug her fingers into her arms hard enough for her nails to draw blood.

Hank grabbed her hands so she wouldn't harm herself further, though he didn't try to uncurl her. He just let her wait it out, because he couldn't safely do anything without running the risk of interacting badly with whatever she'd been given.

Later that night Mavin was still in the infirmary. The effects of the drug still hadn't worn off; instead, they had gotten worse. The waves of pain were further apart, but intense enough that Mavin couldn't help but cry out as her skin physically rippled and her limbs started to twist strangely.

Finally, near midnight, it reached a breaking point. The pain came again, and this time didn't stop. Mavin tried to hold it in, but her eventual scream was cut off as her mutation finally jumped and she abruptly changed shape into a bear.

Hank jumped, both at the sound and at the sudden transformation. Sudden jumps like this were very unusual in adults, and he had a suspicion the drug had done it. He was just waiting on the test results.

"Mavin? Can you hear me?" He did keep a close eye on her, because bears were rather large.

The bear blinked and shook herself, looking around. Then slowly, she nodded. She opened her mouth, but only a grumbling growl came out.

Hank nodded. "Good. Give yourself a bit of time to relax and settle down. Don't try to change back just yet."

Mavin grumbled again, but settled down. She was a bear, but at least she didn't hurt anymore. Not the worst trade in the world, for the moment. Almost as soon as she settled down, she was asleep, exhausted from the jump and the shapeshifting and just everything that had happened.

Hank shook his head a bit and went to go check on the results. Which, once they came up, made him swear quietly and send a mental ping to the professor, because he needed to hear about this ASAP.
