"Good." Steve nodded. "I'm gonna get a head start on some clean up."
"Be down soon to help," Bucky said. He slung his rifle over his shoulder for the moment and headed down to meet up with Steve.
Steve at least got a start on clean up before the normal public works started up again. Tony landed near him, looking around.
"Looking better already. You know there's a lady waiting for you back at the tower?" "What?" Steve blinked, caught off guard by that. |
That made Bucky pause too.
"A lady?" he asked. He looked at Steve. "Who'd be waiting for you?" |
"Dunno." Steve blinked, still rather baffled by that.
"Well, she got in with a UN card," Tony offered. "Seems pretty content to wait." |
“A UN card?” Bucky looked at Steve. “Think it could be Mavin?” He grinned. “Think she figured out you’re sweet on her?”
Steve sighed, because that was one comment he did not need Tony hearing.
"What? Steve? Attracted to someone?" Tony lifted the faceplate to give Bucky an incredulous look. |
Bucky just shrugged.
"You never saw him back in the day, with Peg," he commented. Then he grinned, just shy of a smirk. "It's happened. Steve's just picky as all hell." |
"Hmm." Tony looked at Steve appraisingly.
Steve huffed. "I'm heading back to the tower to see who it is and what she wants," he said, turning away from the two gossiping morons. |
Bucky snickered a bit and followed Steve.
"I'll tag along," he said. "They don't need me out here now, I don't think." |
"Nah, clean up crews are on their way out by now," Steve assured him.
"Then I don't want to give the press any more reason to say anything," Bucky said. "Let's go."
Steve nodded and headed back to the tower.
He did go straight to find whoever was waiting for him, though, not even getting out of uniform just in case. |
Mavin was waiting in the lobby of the building, not in ‘work clothes’ but with her work tablet in her hand. Her UN badge was clipped to her shirt, and a bag sat at her feet. She glanced up when she heard the doors open, and got to her feet when she saw Steve and Bucky.
"Hi." Steve made his way over to her, glancing around briefly. "What's going on? Didn't expect to see you here."
“I didn’t expect to see me here, either,” Mavin admitted. “But I got a call just after the two of you left the mansion, from the UN council, telling me to be here in order to evaluate Sergeant Barnes after the skirmish, to see how stable he seems to be.”
"Ah." Steve glanced back at Bucky briefly. "Well, I can tell you he did very well, so far as I can tell."
"As much as I would love to take you at your word," Mavin said, "they sent me something of a checklist to go through." She sighed. "And they want me to stay long enough to observe how he is at least until tomorrow, if not the next day."
Steve nodded. He'd expected that, honestly. "Mind if we change first, then?" he asked, since it wasn't really an emergency, and he didn't actually need to be in uniform for this.
"Of course," Mavin said, nodding. "Don't let me stop you." She grinned a bit. "Though it looks good on you."
Steve snorted quietly, though his ears were pink. "Right now it doesn't look great," he said dryly, brushing at a dusty spot.
"I'm sure it's seen worse than some dust," Mavin said, grinning a bit. She waved a hand. "Go on. I need to check in with the UN council and ask exactly what they want me to do for this evaluation."
Steve nodded and headed for the elevators, nudging Bucky along with him. "C'mon, let's go get cleaned up at least," he murmured.
Once they had gone into the elevators, Mavin did as she said she would and pulled out her phone, reaching out to her contact for the council and getting specifics on what they wanted for the evaluation.
By the time she was off the phone, she figured the other Avengers had gotten back. She considered for a moment, and then texted Steve. Is it okay if I come upstairs? I need to start my observation. |
Steve glanced at his phone and then smiled a bit. Give us five minutes, unless you want to startle Buck on his way out of the shower, he responded, going back to toweling his hair dry (or attempting to).
