"I'll find something," Mavin said, nodding. "Although not much can top it when I tell him that Mommy met Captain America."

Lucy snickered. "Well we'll see what we find. I fully intend to find something for the kid."

"Let me know what you find," Mavin said, grinning. "You'll probably have more time to look than I will."

"Probably," Lucy agreed easily. "You'll be busy with Captain America." She couldn't help but grin teasingly at Mavin.

Mavin snorted.

"I'll be lucky if he doesn't try to bite my head off again," she said.

"Well now he needs your cooperation doesn't he?" Lucy pointed out reasonably. "Since the council picked you to say the magic words."

"Which reminds me, I heard tell that it's in Russian, that'll be fun. I can't even pretend to read Russian," Mavin said. She stretched and sighed.

"Call Kurt," Lucy said with a shrug. "He'll coach you through it all. I'll ask him for you if you want."

"I'll give him a call once I know what I'm supposed to not mangle," Mavin said. She grinned. "I wonder if he's aware that I know he's been trying to teach Connor?"

"He might know. He won't care." Lucy grinned. "He just doesn't give a shit unless someone objects."

"Which he knows I won't," Mavin said, grinning. "Lucky for him." She was quiet for a moment. "Though I know for a fact everyone is hoping Connor shows an x-gene. Which is possible, I suppose, though his father didn't have one that I knew of."

"It's possible," Lucy said with a little shrug. "I mean they'll still love him either way, really." She smiled a bit.

"Oh I know," Mavin agreed. She smiled. "He's got the most doting family ever."

"Yes he does." Lucy grinned. "Alright, I'm getting hungry. Let's go see if we can wrangle up some food."

"Sounds like a plan to me," Mavin said, getting up as well.

By the time of the actual meeting, Lucy had been roped into staying by the Professor. She wasn't necessarily happy about it, but she was sitting on ground level near the wall with the Professor.

Steve, on the other hand, was hovering from a few feet away, watching Mavin and Bucky very, very carefully.

Mavin had been given a sheet of paper with the trigger sequence on it, and she had gotten someone to write down the phonetics for her so she could pronounce everything properly.

Barnes had allowed himself to be shackled to a steel chair in preparation for the test. It only made sense, after all; they wanted to make sure he didn't attack anyone, least of all the girl reading the trigger.

One of the officials called the meeting to order, and dead silence fell over the room. He turned to Mavin and nodded.

"You may begin."

Steve watched closely, tense and ready to act if he needed to.

Mavin nodded and turned to face Barnes, sheet of words in hand. Slowly, she began to read them, firmly and clearly.

"Longing, rusted, seventeen, daybreak, furnace, nine, benign, homecoming, one, freight car."

Even though he was expecting it this time, Barnes still fought the sequence. He jerked and strained against the shackles on the chair, grinding his teeth and breathing hard through his nose. Finally, he calmed and went quiet as Mavin said the last few words of the sequence.

"Soldier?" Mavin asked softly.

"Ready to comply," the Winter Soldier replied evenly. He looked up at her with a blank, empty stare.

Steve swallowed hard but didn't make a move.

"Fascinating," one of the members of the council said, watching the Soldier. "It is quite a difference."

General Ross kept his expression neutral, standing back for now.

Mavin glanced at the council, and then proceeded with the questions on the paper.

"Identify yourself," she said to the Soldier.

"Asset," the Soldier said. He sat there, deceptively docile.

Ross waited a few minutes until he was sure the Soldier was under control, and then he stepped forward.

"What kind of assignments were you given, Soldier?"

The Soldier glanced at Mavin for permission to speak. Mavin nodded.

"Escort. Infiltration. Assassination." Each word was spoken as fact, with no elaboration.

"Assassination of whom?" Ross asked, pouncing on that point. "We need names and dates."

Steve made an aborted motion, but T'Challa didn't. He stood fluidly.

"I do believe, General, that this meeting is being held to determine that Barnes was indeed under mind control, not to go into details of his past missions."

The Soldier again looked to Mavin for permission, and she took her cue from T'Challa and shook her head. The Soldier obediently stayed silent.

"Please detail your containment," Mavin said, looking at her list of questions. She could see the Soldier tense. "You will not be decomissioned. Please detail your containment."

There was a beat of silence.

"The asset is debriefed, and then wiped of mission details, per protocol. The asset is then put into cryogenic storage until the next mission," he finally said.

"How were you wiped of mission details?" Mavin asked. There was another beat of silence.

"The Chair," the Soldier said. He was quiet for a moment. "Is the asset scheduled for decomission?"

"No," Mavin said, fighting to keep her voice steady. "No, you will not be decomissioned. You have permission to release this information."
