Summer nodded and did the same.
"May as well see where this one goes," she said, pointing her keyblade at the mirror. "Hopefully no shadow crabs this time." |
Rose snickered and watched as the mirror shimmered and changed. She stepped through the portal, taking a moment to orient herself once on the other side and look around.
Summer followed her through and blinked in the light.
"Well, this is different," she said, looking around at all the buildings. "From a tropical island to... a big city?" |
"That's what it looks like," Rose agreed, turning in a slow circle and looking around. She did pause at a familiar landmark several blocks away, though, and she shaded her eyes to get a better look.
"Oh god. Oh god, Summer." |
"What?" Summer paused and followed Rose's gaze. "Oh. Okay, wait a second, what the actual and entire fuck? That's Avengers Tower. How...?"
"I don't know," Rose muttered, still staring at it. "I don't know, but if we're really here, if this is actually this world, then..." She trailed off, her eyes going huge as something bright and shiny red and gold zoomed over their heads back towards Avengers Tower.
Summer yelped and scrambled backwards.
"Was that Iron Man?" she asked rhetorically. "Oh my god that was Iron Man. We're in Avengers. Oh this could either be awesome or horrible." |
"Both, always both," Rose muttered, staring after him. "Okay. Shit. Okay. Um." She paused for a moment and then let out a rather hysterical giggle. "At least there's showers here."
"And mirrors," Summer replied. "Showers and mirrors, okay, we're doing good." She looked around. "Okay, so, um... We don't have a paper airplane from Mickey this time. Do we just... go to the front door? Or is there a bat-signal or something?"
"I have no clue." Rose looked a little lost. "I mean, we have no proof, and currently I see exactly zero heartless to fight off."
"And It's probably a bad idea to just wave our keyblades around," Summer said, nodding. "Okay. We can figure this out. There's got to be someone on this world who won't think we're raving mad." She paused for a moment, thinking. "Our best bet is probably to find Coulson. Level head, used to weird shit, and probably the most likely to hear us out before doing anything."
"Probably," Rose agreed. "Now the question becomes, how do we find him? We're not even sure where in the timeline we are, assuming the timeline here is the same as the timeline we're used to."
"We can probably place ourselves in the timeline well enough," Summer said. "We just need to find a fresh newspaper, within the last week, and we can at least figure out when we are."
"True." Rose glanced around. "This is going to take some getting used to." She glanced in a few waste bins as they passed, but didn't see any newspapers.
Summer glanced around and saw a Starbucks.
"They might have some newspapers," she said, heading over. "Wish I had money, I would kill for a latte right about now." |
"Oh I know." Rose huffed. "We need to get paid for this job, seriously."
It took a couple minutes of looking around, but she did spot a paper and snatched it up, examining the date on it. "Well, that's better ish," she muttered, beckoning Summer over. |
Summer looked over the date and the headlines, trying to place them on her mental timeline.
"So... we're sometime after the whole civil war thing," she ventured, skimming the front page. "Yeah, look, this is referring to the Accords in the past tense, so that thing must have already happened." |
"Right. Which means the rest of the team is likely not around," Rose pointed out. "Probably just Tony at the tower, I think they were already mostly upstate by now?"
"Unless they're on the Raft," Summer pointed out. "We don't know if-slash-when they got broken out, officially."
"True," Rose agreed, frowning. "We don't really know if this world is even the same, it could have gone differently."
"Oh true," Summer said. "I didn't think about that." She made a frustrated sound. "We need to talk to someone in charge, but we need to find them and not sound insane when we do. Any other unicorns we need to track down?"
"Not yet," Rose said with a shrug. "But we will need to find all the heartless here, and the heart of the world. No biggie."
Summer sighed.
"How is it we're more unprepared for this world than we were for the one we didn't recognize?" she asked. "Tropical island? We were fine. Shadow of Avengers Tower? We're like headless chickens." |
"Maybe because we do know?" Rose guessed. "So we're freaking out because what the hell." She shrugged and looked around again. Something was putting her on edge now, and she couldn't see anything wrong. Yet.
Summer could feel the creeping dread as well, and she shuddered as it went up her spine.
"Ugh, no, I know that feeling," she said, glancing around warily. She could see Rose doing the same. "There are heartless around. You feel them too right?" |
