When you've got everything filled in with the base color go to the color picker and pick a color just a few shades darker then the one you were using ~ this is the color I pick to go over the lines again ~ see the original color in the main box and then the color I've picked now? Some people also redraw the lines in black, which I feel can look a little harsh but it's up to you :)

this is also how I choose my highlight color something right around the same as your base color just a little brighter or lighter, Personally I save these into the custom colors so then I can use them later see how they show up in the color boxes under the default ones?

And now scribble away, start with the darker color and go over any of the lines you want to stand out and areas you want to look shaded, then go in with the bright color and scribble anyplace you think it should be light. I usually just rotate between the three colors until the canvas is colored and I get the look I'm trying to achieve

That's really the basics though how do you feel about it so far? you want any additional tips or tricks?

OH here's two tips I forgot at the start, you don't have to do them but I find them helpful.
1. you can also resize the picture when you start to be 2x its size and then when your done resize it back to normal size, this makes getting small details easier and will make any mistakes you make less noticeable in the end.

also I tend to start with the furthest back parts of the piece and work forward. This way when I scribble over the ribbon, I only have to be careful where it covers the tree, and then it kind cleans it self up

like if I was actually coloring this all the way for the contest I would start with the background, then the ornaments, then the present then the kitty :)
Then after ALL of thats done I'll go in with an opaque brush (most likely just the pencil because it's the smallest size at just one pixel) and do any details like in this case the folds in the ribbon

Neither does my tablet.

I downloaded one for my tablet, Graphine or something, it's on my broken phone as well, but it was a fancy kind w/ a stylus :)
they weren't great but I could use them to doodle out my ideas so I didn't forget by the time I got home and could actually draw them out.
