Well, that's one way of looking at things X'D

They both irritate me for different reasons. Edward is always blaming himself for everything, and Jacob is a big brat for too long D8

Cherry Who? 03-01-2009 05:10 PM

I've always thought that Bella should end up with Edward (really, the story would have been rather silly if she hadn't... not that it wasn't to begin with), but Jake is my favorite character from the series. Yeah, he's kind of a dick at times, but it's for real reasons. No ancient angst.

Mnemosyne 03-01-2009 08:41 PM

Alright, so from the majority of what I've read through this thread it seems that most of you enjoy the books. This makes me hesitant to state my opinion, but here it goes...

Twilight seems to me to be rubbish. The writing is very poorly done. It needs to go through a more critical editor and the story line, if you can call it that, is just a repetition of everything that has already been done. The only thing "new" that was really added was that her vampires "sparkle". Not to mention that it is the most misogynistic love story I have ever had the fault of laying eyes upon. Edward is no prince charming. He's insecure, possessive, and way too over-powering. I mean, he disabled her car so she couldn't go visit a friend for god's sake. Not to mention the constant act of stalking he manages. If I found out any man, immortal and beautiful or not, was looking in my window every night I'd have his ass handed to the police in seconds. Their entire "love" story is flawed as well. She knows him for what, a month before she's madly in love with him? To me the whole thing seems like allusion to a past that Meyer was not given. She wanted to be the beautiful and perfect girl that had the attention of every man as well as the girl that was able to date the "star" football player, or in this case "vampire". The whole series seemed sick to me (and yes, I did read all four painful "books").

Also, I can't stand books that have to mention how beautiful and perfect their characters are every five sentences. Its quite disgusting.

OH, and don't even get me started on how retarded of a character Bella is. I mean geez, can one person be that stupid? Really? I mean, seriously, just let her die if she's going to be in danger THAT much. I mean what the hell she lives in an admittedly BORING AND UNEVENTFUL town. I don't see how someone could have survived Phoenix, Arizona and then moved to Forks, Washington and suddenly be having so many different problems with surviving even the most menial things. Not to mention she's just boring. She has no personality what-so-ever and is kind of a hallow being of "LOVE EDWARD". Really, my six year old cousin has come up with more creative characters than her.

The whole thing seemed to be leading to the idea that women need to be barefoot and pregnant in a kitchen for the rest of their lives. Bella is willing to give away her life for a man she's not known more than a year. She's willing to be completely and utterly SUBMISSIVE to a man she's know a YEAR. I mean, really. That's not realistic and it screams stupidity.

And now I'm ranting so I'll stop, but yeah. Twilight, in my opinion, sucks. :/

Cherry Who? 03-01-2009 09:13 PM

You obviously have not read very much of the thread, then. We all admit it kinda sucks.
So I don't really think you read that much of the thread, hmm? xDD

Mnemosyne 03-01-2009 09:54 PM

I bounced around 25 or so pages and I actually did notice that you guys mentioned some things, but the major opinion is that the book is good. I was simply stating that I find it to be completely bad. I felt that I should also state why I thought it was bad, that's all. Unless you'd prefer I had come in and just said "Twilight sucks", but that's not discussion at all. :P

MurasakiCrown 03-01-2009 11:15 PM

I think the main opinion in this thread is that the book is good because it's so bad. XD

Comparable to crack, maybe? XD

Mnemosyne 03-02-2009 12:07 AM

Haha. Well, that is always one way to look at it, I guess. To me its just plain bad, but I guess I can get your uh..liking it for its horribleness from the conversation I read. You have to forgive me, I only read about 25 pages like I said and that was bouncing around to get a general 'feel' for the topic, but there are about 100 pages I missed, so I may have not quite gotten it until now. :P

duskyasianrose 03-03-2009 07:13 AM

I love this series thus far, since I've only read up til New Moon. But, Eclipse is on my to do list this Spring Break...yay!
Also, if you liked the Twilight series, you may also like "The Vampire Diaries" by L.J. Smith. It was written long before the Twilight series and can be arguably better...in my opinion anyway :)

MurasakiCrown 03-04-2009 03:41 AM

Haha, a LOT Of things are better than Twilight.

Lookit me guys, I'm a corpse!

King of Bedlam 03-04-2009 04:09 AM

awesome.... nice avi purple... XD

Its fun how this looked like a Twilight fan thread and its turning into a bomb thread :P

MurasakiCrown 03-04-2009 04:19 AM

A lot of the Twilight fans in this thread make fun of it X'D

King of Bedlam 03-04-2009 04:25 AM

lol.... you know a series is bad when the fans of it start finding faults left and right... XD....

anyway... i'ma go.... XD cya.

AutumnRose 03-05-2009 06:04 AM

I thought the books were absolutely amazing, but I think it's getting way too much credit. OR not even that, it deserves it, but I just think I'm getting irritated with the fact that everyone is in love with the same thing as me :C

Psychotic Cricket 03-05-2009 09:18 PM

Just popping in to post my share on this.

I really like the Twilight series. For a long time I refused to read the books, much in the same way I took forever to start reading Harry Potter: The obsessed fans, or overly obsessed I should say. They really make you lose interest in something when all you hear is, " Oh my god I LOVE Edward Cullen, I want my Own Edward" so on so forth.

I ended up finally buying Twilight just after the release of Breaking Dawn. Finished it in a day, thought it was pretty good so I went out and bought New Moon, then Eclipse and finally Breaking Dawn. I understood why everyone liked the books so much but I still so no reason to the numerous screaming fans drooling over a fictional character.

The only problem I ever had with the series besides the screaming fan girls were the people who put the book down.. and way down at that. Saying the books is horrible written, that the characters have no personality so on so forth. Seriously if you don't like it you don't have to rant and rant and rant about not liking it. Just ignore it like everyone else.

I really liked the Midnight Sun excerpt that is available on Meyer's web site. It's sad that someone was so cruel to her though. In the end I hope she can forgive the person and hopefully we'll get the finished book. It's interesting to see everything from Edwards perspective.

As for the movie. I watched it, I liked it, but I didn't love it. As always with books to movies some things were missing and for some reason the actor playing Bella drove me a bit nuts with how much blinking she did in the movie. I know she's usually nervous around Edward but you wouldn't blink that much. Other than that it was still a good movie.

I look forward to New Moon and seeing how the werewolf scenes come out.

King of Bedlam 03-06-2009 12:12 AM

I was annoyed by the people that gave twilight so much credit, its not a literary revolution.... it is not one of those books that will be 'remembered forever'. I was also annoyed by the fangirls.... and the people who hunted down twilight lovers and bashed them over the head over and over again until they would either admit they didn't like twilight or got a restraining order.

I personally do not like the idea of twilight.... The Characters are a bit over-perfected from what i've heard.... but i have no right to bash twilight lovers(minus the Edward fangirls XD), and i have no right to bash Meyer's writing ability without reading the book first.

Psychotic Cricket 03-06-2009 01:12 AM

I admit her actual writing wasn't that perfect and there were some typos bur overall it was still written decently. I just get annoyed with the people who are all 'she can't write at all she's terrible' and all that. It's just a book. If you don't like how someone writes, then you don't have to read the book. It's supposed to be about the story, how the story was written isn't the main topic haha.

I agree with the fan girls.. one reason why I will never tell one of my friends I read the books. She'd be all over me about Edward this and Edward that. She has a boyfriend of a few years and she's still all Edward this and that. No offense but if I were a male I'd have a serious self confidence issue after all that.

King of Bedlam 03-06-2009 01:17 AM

If i was that guy....I would give her a picture of Edward and say, "Enjoy the time with your new boyfriend". If she holds a fictional character over me.... I don't really want to have anything to do with that. I can understand character obsession sometimes, I just... Don't think it needs to be on the tip of every conversation. The Edward obsession is.... quite annoying x.x

Cherry Who? 03-06-2009 03:48 AM

As for her writing... I mentally slap people who go either way. People who say she's the worst writer ever have not read anything other than amazing books. There are far worse things out there. If you're looking for something epic, yes, Twilight will severely let you down. But it's just a little story. If you take it and accept it as fluff, it can be enjoyable. But people who say that she is the best writer ever or it's the best books ever need a very strong slap in the face. They are entertaining, but that it is. There's no message, no social commentary, no intense, deep plots. Just a cute little story. They need to go read some other books. That, or learn to say "in my opinion." Or just "my personal favorite" rather than "THE BEST THING EVER WRITTEN ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH LOL THIS IS TOTALLY BETTER THAN ORWELL AND AUSTEN AND HEMMINGWAY AND SHAKESPEARE AND [etc.]"
No. Just no. ><

I haz objection. Insert meme here.

Even if a story has a good concept, bad writing can really ruin it. I was reading this fanfic once (don't brick me) and it was actually a rather interesting story, but the boring style of writing (and the bad grammar) made me toss it and never return. The quality of writing certainly matters.

But I agree that it's not the worst thing in the world. It's a nice piece of fluff.

Psychotic Cricket 03-06-2009 06:01 PM

I think in my case it wasn't so horrible that I noticed it. I didn't really notice till I read the books over again.
I understand what you mean though. They style might not bother me but it might bother some others.

It reminds me of reading Brisingr. I loved Eragon and Eldest. Got to Brisingr and it was nice over all. You got some info you needed and things happened but over all it was very dull to me. The battles weren't as interesting and it was just work to get through the thing without pulling my hair out.

Cheya 03-09-2009 02:42 AM

Well... I like Twilight a little bit even though I thought it was the worst series in the world (obvious exaggeration), but It has some good fan-wank material in it as well as slashable (femslashable) characters. It's great because it got people to read just like Harry Potter raked in young children and adults alike to the libraries and book stores.

Psychotic Cricket 03-09-2009 11:32 PM

That reminded me of something I heard someone say.
She didn't really care if people were obsessed with the series or it was well written or horribly written. She was just happy her son read something again since Harry Potter.

:Ninja: 03-10-2009 07:25 PM

I'm personally glad she posted up the Midnight Sun. I won't be reading this one unless it's extraordinary. I can't read a book more than once and it's the same story twice really.

Cherry Who? 03-10-2009 08:19 PM

I could probably read it. I hate rereading things generally, but I did read Twilight about 3 times... xD Soooo...

Seiki Nova 03-11-2009 08:54 AM

Even though Midnight Sun is essentially Twilight, I think it's a better story overall because the perspective is better. There's more of a struggle involved with the characters from Edward's perspective then from Bella's.

Plus he's generally funnier than Bella. And hearing what the others were thinking at the time makes it seem more interesting.
