Honestly, while there is something about them that draws you in, maybe the premise, I'm not sure at all, the books in general are very poorly written. The plot lines are trite, the character development is shallow, the archetypes are obvious, and the dialogue is at times painful. Most offensively, Meyer's personal agenda is very very heavy handed. They're obviously young adult in theme and maturity, but Breaking Dawn was so wholly inappropriate for a young adult audience that I was gobsmacked. Granted, Bella's behavior is generally very unhealthy, but rarely inappropriate before the last book. I sincerely hope they don't make a movie of it. That being said, I think the reason the books are so popular with fans, especially fanfic writers, is that the characters are like ready made shells. Bare bones, but endearing and ready for fun further development. It's certainly a fluffy indulgence piece, much like Gossip Girl, but given how popular that is now it's probably just what they were going for. Even though I don't consider them literature, I do love some of the characters, notably the entire Cullen clan, minus Bella and Edward. I think their dynamic apart from those two is FANTASTIC. Jasper will always be my favorite!
The movie on the other hand, was such a colossal failure it's hysterical. My friends and I were laughing so hard we were crying. After watching it two more times, I realized its so heinous it's actually hysterically enjoyable, like a really bad kung fu flick on a Friday night. Hardwicke's cinematography wasn't all bad, minus the over exaggeration during the "clue" scenes and the predictable lighting. The hairstyling was awful and unfortunate for almost everyone, hopefully that will change in time. Music was FANTASTIC, and casting was great, except for Robert Pattinson who really can't act. Kristin Stewart makes it almost enjoyable to watch Bella. I'm looking forward to New Moon, especially Taylor Lautner on screen fro more than 30 second. Hopefully, he'll be a decent actor, bu if the next one isn't as bad as the last I'll be sorely disappointed. |
Oh my gosh, you definitely just described my exact reaction to the Twilight books. To me they were so unbelievably addicting (couldn't put them down) but yeah, the writing was terrible.
And the movie? I was laughing so hard! I really love the movie because it's so terrible. |
Bella says: "Epic Mary Sue power, activate!"
I thought I was the only one who wanted to spell out "theatre" :'o Sweet XD I think Seck finally let me figure out why I actually found the series enjoyable in some way. Sadly, I tried to re-read it, and I can't seem to do it...Especially Breaking Dawn. I can't seem to get past the first third of the book. |
Breaking Dawn is horrible. I was so disappointed with it. I was okay with everything and then I read Breaking Dawn and I was like "WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!"
|
I think it would be fun to just go in there and edit every mistake and inconsistency we can find, but that might take too long..
|
I wouldn't want to know how many edits would be found in there Plat DX

I liked these books, but I do not understna dthe absolute hype about them. They're okay but their not the best thing since sliced bread! xD
I liked the way they were written but the plot was fairly weak and predictable. I liked her twist on tradtional vampires, but saying they 'sparkle' was a bit too far. I love the romance side of it and I like the fact that they have to hold back alot. I really don;t like the character jacob as he is so predictable so new moon was my least favourite book, i;d say twilight was the best one thought most first books usually are. As for the film well they made an okay book worse! What was going on with carlisles dodgey dyed hair! |
OMG!!! my favorite book of the series is new moon
just cause there's more jacob black in it HES SOO HOT |
This has probably been said repetitively, heh. I like the series, mainly because of the plot. Personally, I think the background characters have a more interesting story with more depth than compared to Bella and Edward. Frankly, Edward can be seen as nice, but after having deep discussions with various people, I have realized that there is a side to Edward that is well, abusive. I guess you could say I'm more of a Jacob fan, as I love his attitude, but I'd rather date a vampire. And as many others have probably stated, the plot is quite good, but I'm not a fan of the way Meyers writes. And the last book actually disappointed me. As quoted, to the best of my memory at least, "It's like the Volturi came, saying 'You can't have a vampire child! It's against our laws.' and then Bella and her family/friends went 'Oh yes we can! There's a handful of other half human-vampires who aren't dangerous. Plus, we'll fight you!!!" and the Volturi were like 'Oh. Okay' and just left."

Worst non-fight that never happened x_x
@pumpkins: that link contains uh..questionable material. As funny as it is... |
I would be worried about that link as well XD Why are they making that?
|
Well, it hasn't been removed...and I THINK I reported it so..I guess it stays there? O.o
I know that the series is geared towards young adults, but that older people have red the books as well. Still.... really...? |
If the people of Gaia ever heard of such thing. They would bash you right here and right now. But I am not like them, for I, like Twilgiht. But I am not going to dwell with you guys in it any longer. I am currently over this and I am onward to another book I will be obsessed with. Maybe obsessed over another book than Twilight? Because it will happen.
|
I used to love the Twilight series, but as soon as I saw the movie my passion for the books just kind of...died.
|
I loved reading the twilight series and def fell in love with Bella/Edward and their life/love and fell in love with Jasper and Alice's bonds.
But the movie really was disappointing, I expected something amazing and creative and just as inspiring as the books. I still love the series though but as books. Even though the author isn't amazing, she did make a great story. =3 |
I agree, Twilight movie really killed how i liked the book, because all of a sudden, there seemed to be fangirls/fanboys everywhere, all wanting to be vampires. And basically, to be honest, it's all way too much a fuss over the book, it's not actually that good, it just had a really nice plot. :)
However, i think that everyone should read her book - the host. It's stunning. Loved it so much. Right now i'm wishing for the many-th time that she'd right a sequel. |
Ugh, I had written several long paragraphs, and then Facebook destroyed the whole thing!
....basically, I liked the first book when I didn't treat it seriously at all, but the rest of the books got steadily worse. The writing in the first wasn't that bad - it was amateur, but pleasantly simple and didn't try to sound more mature than it really was. That disappeared more and more as the books continued. But as for the "plot" people keep mentioning, there really was none. The whole thing was basically people interacting, with mini-events strewn in here and there. There were a few actual plots, like Bella being hunted, and the bit with the Volturi, but for the most part, those plots either ended too quickly, were too drawn out, or were not emphasized enough on. All in all, I did enjoy the first book (and the first one alone), but it wasn't anything special, and is only something I would reread once in a blue moon. |
twilight really isn't my thing. i have actually come to despise the book series, not for the books, but for the fans. i mean, some of them are actually quite violent.
|
I was a fan once myself, but honestly it's a getting bit much with all these fans. Okay, so they love the story. But the fact is everything should be taken in moderation. Even Twilight.
