WMP is giving me grief at the moment :x EDIT: ooh I got a suggestion: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 AVG free antivirus is really good. When I caught a virus over 2 years ago my cousin fixed my computer and he installed AVG free. It hasn't let me down since ^^ |

Please provide links if you want me to add things. ^^ (and if you can write a short description too, please... XD;;;)

Avast Anti-Virus is also free for home use, although the professional edition you do have to buy (you won't need to though). The program updates its self frequently so as to keep on top of new viruses, and the only 'catch' is that you have to re-register the product once a year. This is also free. |
Spybot Search & Destroy
Gets rid of spyware/adware. :3 |
VLC media player... I use it for all my vids... it's awesome, and has yet to fail me in any way/shape/form.

I lost that program when I formatted my computer and couldn't find it again. x3; |
I back AVG and Spy-bot, both great programs which I run on my pc and laptop.
Heres another that may help some. Belarc Advisor-Link " The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server. " Quote taken directly from the site describing the Advisor. |
I use all of those except AVG. They're great. This is a good sticky. I use ad-aware and spybot a lot.
|
Hmm here are some you should include.
spybot S & D http://www.spybot.info/ Comodo firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ avast anti-virus http://www.avast.com/ & CC cleaner (crap cleaner) http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ |
Try to download PrintKey2000. It's a one-step screenshot saver.

Sorry guys, I know I need to update this. ; 3;

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Open Office! Open Office is an Office Suite similar to Window's Office. I love it so much! My computer had Microsoft word processor on it, not Word, word processor. It sucked! Then I found Open Office. It has an awesome word processor as well as other office programs like a presentation program (think power point and slideshows), and spreadsheet and database programs. If you don't have Microsoft Office but want programs like that, you need Open Office and you will not be disappointed. I love my Writer and would be lost without it. <3

I also second For-Chan Cookie's support of the Open Office suite, although unfortunately I've experienced some compatibility issues with it in the past. It's not perfect, but it's got a really powerful word processing program which I have not had problems with. I would actually not recommend using its version of "Excel" or "Powerpoint" for important presentations. I've actually had a problem with my grade because the OpenOffice version of Excel was not compatible with Microsoft Excel, and some important elements of my project were actually removed when I saved it in a "compatible" format. Whoops. Still, the suite should be downloaded JUST for the word processor, even if you don't ever use the other programs. I have both the Microsoft 2003 suite and the OpenOffice suite and I much prefer OpenOffice's word processor. As for other programs! I would strongly recommend the GIMP(I only skimmed the thread but I have not seen it mentioned). It is a VERY powerful image editing program, and completely free! It is also cross platform. Unfortunately it can be difficult for some people to learn, but if you need a powerful image editing program for free, I would recommend the GIMP. http://www.gimp.org/ I don't believe anyone has mentioned Google Desktop before, either, which is a bit surprising. Although I don't use it often(what can I say, I'm well organized!), Google Desktop has saved my arse MORE than a few times when I really needed to find a file quickly on my computer. It has also let me know when I USED to have a file but I had deleted it like a complete moron. Very useful program, but it does need to constantly run so it can be updated so it's not for old or slow computers. http://desktop.google.com/ The other Google offering I find very useful is Picasa. It is great for managing images quickly and easily. My favorite use for it is to import my photos - it lets me preview them, it doesn't take a horribly long time to start up and the import process is quick and easy(I can even edit my photos a bit, like to rotate them so they're right side up). http://picasa.google.com/ The only other great, free program I can think of is Trillian. It lets you connect to all the major Instant Messenging networks. That means, you can be online via AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, IRC, AND ICQ all in one program! It has great managing tools for managing your accounts. One of MY favorite parts is that, if I'm going to be away from my computer, I can select one away message and it will put ALL the clients on "away" with that message. Very simple and easy! I have to admit though, I have the "Pro" version of this software. It also does not do a few things I wish it would - things like Voice Chat are spotty at best, and webcam viewing doesn't even work. They haven't released a new version in quite a long time, but they are on alpha stage for their next version, which is hugely different from their previous one. http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/ Okay, that's it. There was a blog I had bookmarked once that had programs people had voted most useful, but unfortunately I can't find it in my bookmarks or via Google. |
DO NOT touch an anti-spyware program named Spycrush. I accidentally downloaded it to my computer, and it's really annoying, throwing popups everywhere, and telling me my computer's infested, and stuff. By the way, does anyone know how to get rid of Spycrush?
|
I use firefox ad-aware and avg too. they're great programs, and free too. PLUS firefox is SO much better than IE. believe me. IE just copied the tabbed browsing feature by mozilla... the losers XD
i dont really use other stuff besides anti virus and anti spy XD |

I agree~! I use Trillian, too. It's got my AIM, MSN, and Yahoo all conveniently rolled up into one messenger! :3 There are a few cons to it, but it's sooo convenient! x3 |
