Of Mice And Men
"The Best laid plans of mice and men
gang aft agley" Just wondering if anyone here has read the short story of mice and men, and wondering what they would have done in George's situation, throughout the book. I really liked the story, and I think the ending was tragic but was probably the only thing that could be done.. |
Oh gawd. I loved that book. Of course, I love anything Steinbeck, so it's only natural. I killed my school copy from reading it. I had to pay for a replacement, but it was worth it. =D
As for what I would have done, I probably would have tried to have done everything George did, through and through. He was a good guy, and faithful and loyal to Lenny, even though Lenny was such a high-maintenance figure in a time when few could afford having someone like that with them. And George certainly didn't have that luxury. But he stuck through it all and did the best he could. Augh, I'd forgotten how much I loved George. Dx <3 |
I liked the book, but I only read it once because it made me really depressed.
I have family like Lenny, except a little worst. And back then, unless you had money, you had no help for someone with disablities like that. For George, sadly I think that was his only option. At that time there was not much you could of done. i think I started crying with the end. Not to say it was not good. |
Ah, one of my old favorites. I first read it when I was ten. I don't even think my English teacher realized what it was I was reading, otherwise I'm sure she would've encouraged me instead of sitting in her chair as if it were a throne of skulls and fuming (read: she was an evil bitch).
As for George, I think he's the classic downtrodden protagonist, the one who tries to keep his morals through everything. It's sad to see everything come down to his having to murder Lenny, but given the situation and his choices, there was nothing more he could've done. Plus, you know, any different ending would've contradicted a lot of what the novel was leading up to. Oddly enough, when I first read the book, I kept picturing Gary Sinese as George, mostly because I'd seen Forrest Gump that previous summer. I didn't know until recently that Sinese directed and starred in an adaptation. It's actually very well done, even if Malkovich's Lenny leaves a little to be desired. |
Oh that book really stuck with me.
Just thinking about it now gives me that hallow feeling in my chest of almost despair - I really think that George did the best thing possible for Lenny - I cried and cried for Lenny and George after finishing that book - it really was the most 'humane' thing to do, but that doesn't make it any easier. |
I'm really glad you all enjoyed it, and i too loved george ..
he made the right decision in my opinion, as well .. i really dont see any other options .. and the movie was also good.. if you've seen it .. . |
I was surprised t ofind that I quite like of Mice and Men. Better than the other stuff we had to do at school, anyway o_O
It was really sad though :( |
Yeah, the ending killed my heart.
Spoilers.----------------- It really bothered me how George made all these false promises to Lennie..He should have accomplished their dream together instead of killing poor Lennie. It might have been the best solution for Lennie to pass on to another life but how could he have killed his friend like that? And at the end, it showed George moving on with another friend.. Their friendship was so strong. D: |
I just read that book recently. I liked it, but at the same time, it was so sad. ;_;
And then watching the movie. Lennie was cool, even if he crushes things. XD <3 George is a very nice character. M'mm.. yay. |

and i also still wish they could have gotten their home .. but .. i don't think it could've suceeded after Lennie killed Curley's trashy wife. because there woud be too much to run from, and nowhere to go, unless he actually sent him into the mountains like lennie kept saying he would go .. . @ Colours: yes, he crushes things xD |
xD I didn't even know that was a book!
|
I've read it I found it to be very sad.T_T

In a way, he was doing what he thought was best for Lennie. If he had let Lennie live, there's no telling what Curley and his posse would have done to him. They wouldn't have cared that he was mentally challenged. I guess, in a way, he was really putting Lennie out of his misery. |
It was required reading for me in 8th grade. I found it sad and depressing... grrr
|
I was lucky enough to get to see the play of it when we read it in school, junior year. It was amazing.
It's a very tragic story, but that's one of the appealing things about it... at least, to me anyway. |
Of Mice and Men was the only John Steinbeck book I could actually read, even out of his other short stories and novels. That short story was fantastic, it was hard not to read ahead (I had a lot of slow people in my class...), but in the end I was really sad. But what could he do? If Lenny was to be caught he would have either been killed by strangers OR, even worse, thrown into a jail where he would probably be severly abused. So, anyway, yes I liked the short story and I also would have done the same.

It was a good book.. I liked it. ^^ But the ending sucked.. I was like, "NOOO, Lennieee! D:" so yeah.. xD
I also saw the play a few weeks after I read the book. It was really awesome..so much humor. x]] |
oh my lord, I read that book in grade 11 English. I really liked the book, but it also made me all depressed. At the end I cried, so bad, and it class too-sighs- and as if that wasn't bad enough we had to watch the movie after ... so the water works had to come a second time.. only when we watched the movie I wasn't the only one that cried.. As for if I were in Lenny's place. I am not sure what I would do. I remember thinking about it, I think I would try to find a way to help him but I guess what Lenny did was best for him.

Oh man, definitely one of my favorite books. For sure! Ahh!
|
Of the three books that I had to read the summer before my 11th grade year, Of Mice and Men was the only one that I can honestly say that I would read again and again. I loved that story and I really need to get myself a copy of it. It's like 1984 for me, I can read it over and over again and not get bored. ^^
As for what George did at the end, I really think it was more of a mercy killing. He didn't want Lennie to be hurt and so he reacted the only way he knew of. After all, that time wasn't like the current times. If Lennie had been caught by either the authorities or Curley, he would have been either killed by Curley, put in jail, or put in an institution which would have killed Lennie's soul. |
Of Mice and Men is such a sad book I thought...granted I didn't cry like my sister did, but it's pretty good, I liked it.
