Ohh good good queston.
It all depends on the mood. Do u just wont a quilk read? or have a seroise to look foward too? mine the long running books.. always fun ^ ^ |
I guess it depends. There are some authors that should stop at one book and there are others...
I really like having a lot to read but I've noticed that when series get too long the authors kind of get burnt out and it seems like they're only continuing to get more money. So I'm going to have to say single books or maybe two or three books. Generally not long series. |
I like both, though it really depends on the type of story it is. If the storyline is a bit basic (not necessarily in a bad way) then a stand alone would be best, whereas if its really detailed and a lot of events occur in the story then a series would be most appropriate.
I hate how some series are written and never seem to end, even after like 100 books. Example, Sweet Valley series, which I admit I read as a preteen...though definitely not something I'd recommend to anyone of any age. |
I agree. There are some really good series that get killed by being too long. And you want to just stop after a certain book, but then there is always that one unanswered questions that you just have to know the answer to.
|
I like reading long series because I usually never want it to end, but when it gets too long, I really want it to end so I know what happens... o__o |
I like both series and stand alone books. Series are great to read if you like the storyline and the style, but if it's to long, it's a pain to read them unless they're really, really disturbingly good. Stand alones are good if your not in the mood to read a tone of books just to figure out what happens, or if your taking a break from reading a whole series. Usually, though, I read series.

Hmmm.
It all depends on the book, I guess. Take, for instance, the Da Vinci Code. It is perfect as it is. It may be part of a series, but it stands perfectly well on its own. I would like to see more books like that. Because with some series, if you skip a book, nothing makes sense, and you have to go back and read the one you missed to make any sense at all of what is happening now. Some stand alone books just BEG to be expanded upon. Like this novel I read a year or so ago called So Yesterday. There was a great deal of unresolved conflicts in that book, and I still wish there was a sequel or something to tidy things up. |
It's pretty hard to find a good series. I was very disappointed with Harry Potter. I recommend finding an author who's books you really like. For me that is David Sedaris.
|
I don't find it difficult to find good authors, but maybe I'm just not very demanding. There are books that are great and there are books that are good, and what I read depends on that. xD
I prefer series, for the most part. To be honest, I love reading about recurring characters and how they interact, and their lives as they continue. I am nosy, that is one of the reasons I enjoy reading. Stand alones are just fine, as well, but I crave more information. >< I tend to marathon read stand alones by the same author if they don't have a series for me to marathon read... |
For the fantasy genre, it isn't hard to find a good series ^^ So I do prefer series over stand alones. I have read good ones though.
Series seem to me more enjoyable. Mainly because I get used to the characters, the themes, and the writing style easily. I love seeing what happens to characters during their life, new adventures, their children's adventures...Things like that ^^. |
I like both i can read a series but i almost allways read a stand alone book inbetween or sometimes i'll read another series between.
|
I like series and stand alones both for different reasons.
I find that in series I get drawn in more, and more attatched to the characters. Then at the end of the series, I'm left feeling I suppose more complete in the fact that I've been able to see the characters progress throughout different stages at a slower rate (i.e. Harry Potter, LOTR, etc). However, with stand alones, the story is often very quick paced and intriguing. The characters are often very strong and draw you into the book in a very different way (i.e. Snow Falling on Cedars, Alias Grace). And if you are more of a fan of the stand alones, you can read multiple books by that author (my favorite author being Margaret Atwood). So each has their own differing qualities that I find enjoyable, so I don't think I would be able to choose between either a stand alone or a series. |
I like both, I usually go to chapters and pick out a novel from the Heather's Picks section, and their usually pretty good.
Though in a series I like the character development that is there. |
I guess it depends on how good the book is. If it's the kind of book I like then I would totally go for the series. Most of the time the series of a book answer all of my quizzical questions while some stand-alones leaves me hanging or wondering. :P
|
I like reading singles unless I like the books, because when I start reading a series I MUST finish, and I hate having to finish a series that is poorly written or boring.
Though, to be honest, I'll pick up any book at the library, series or not. If buying a book, I'll only buy books that are singles if I haven't read it before. Oh wait, that's not true... huh... I forgot, I picked up the first part of some Margaret Weis book at the thrift store. I love getting books for 25 cents. <3 So yeah, Okay, I'll read anything. I'm a book slut. XD |
greatly depends
there is one series i prefer that the second book didnt exist  but if it hooks me. i would get the rest. |
It depends, but in general I like stand alone books better. Sometimes series are okay, but only when the individual books would be capable of being stand alones. It pisses me off when authors leave you hanging to get you to buy their next book. Good authors shouldn't have to rely on cheap gimmicks like that.
|
I actually read a lot of series novels. Though I do prefer just stand alones. Series just seem to go on and on...I like closure. |
I like series better than one book alone.
Mostly because if I really like a book I don't ever want it to end. |
i'm ok with any form as long as it's very interesting
|
I usually opt for stand alone books. Series, especially long ones will usually intimidate me. I'm usually like: "God, how many more pages do I have to read until it's all over?". I'm very lazy when it comes to reading. It's not a good thing, I know. But whatever...
|
I normally like the series because there is a lot more to read... Which I love. But only if I have all the books in the series. Because I absolutely loath waiting to get a book when i've finished the others.
|
I prefer series, because I've literally cried at the end of stand-alones (and series, for that matter) because they were so good I was sad to see them end.
I MUST read things in order. I get really annoyed if I don't. I don't normally read series that aren't finished, though. I hate waiting for books. I read a lot of stand-alones, though...then I try and write a sequel myself, but I never get past chapter 2 or so. |
I... tend to prefer series, especially if the books are really good. I mean, I love a few stand-alones too, but if I really start to get attached to the characters, then I will be upset if I don't get any more of them. Take The Oracle Prophecies trilogy by Catherine Fisher, for example. I love the characters in that book so much... that I was devastated when I found out The Scarab was the last one. But then, I've re-read the series about four times by this point.
Another example is when I first got Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I turned the last page and was like, "What?! This can't be it! D:" ...Fortunately, it wasn't. :3 *Pats her copies of New Moon and Eclipse happily* Though, one thing I hate about series that I love is... the fact that we have to wait for more! XD |
I tend to prefer stand alone novels. My logic is the following: if the writer needs 5k pages and 10 years to say what they have on mind, its probably not important anyway.
But I often start ( and sometimes even finish ) some series of epic proportions. I've read all of the Drizzt books...and the Wheel of Time...and the Hainian Cycle and the Malazan and SOIAF. Still, stand alone novels tend to work better for me. |
