You're reading Lolita at thirteen? Impressive. It's not very, very difficult reading, and if you pick up a book regularly, it should be okay for you. I didn't dive into Lolita until last year when I discovered it on a random bookshelf at Borders, and even then I found the subject matter strange. Pedophilia isn't something one reads about regularly, you know? It is very good, and it's about a nymphomaniac, but still, there's something about it that's just so funny. ^^;; A twisted sort of funny. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The main character's very odd; you'll laugh a bit. ^^

Lolita is a great book. Nabokov's writing is a little... oh... twisty, so I know I had trouble keeping up with things every now and then, but the book is superb. It has some humor, but the humor is often dark and/or subtle, so it's easy to miss out on.

You have to read this book carefully, but it does NOT disappoint. The movie is also excellent. :D

The thing to remember while reading it is that Humbert is very much a sad and disturbed individual that imagines himself as very sane, which makes the narrative very funny in its seriousness and intelligence. I wouldn't call it a "funny" novel. Bittersweet, maybe. It does have plenty of funny moments, but it's ... really indescribable.

Alegretto: Which movie are you talking about? I've seen and enjoyed the Jeffery Irons version. I've seen bits and pieces of the Kubrick version, but I was not a fan of how the characters were portrayed ... the great James Mason played Humbert too ... flustered, I guess. And that Lo was too sedated. But I've only seen about 20 minutes of it and, to be frank, I think Kubrick's movies are overrated (that's a whole other post; I like some of his stuff, but some of his stuff is also just plain misdirected).

I've seen the Kubrick version. Didn't know there was an Irons one. :o I shall have to look into that. I really liked how accurate the movie was, though. Of course, Nabokov himself did the screenplay, so hey.

Hmm, never had a chance to read it myself, but I've always wanted to ever I read that Lolita was Amy Tan's favorite book..

As for the age limit, I don't really think there is a limit on books. The only reason there's a limit is because the reader might not fully understand the concept of the book. After all, would you have expected that the classic Pride and Prejudice is an 8th grade level book?

I really need to read that... I guess I'll get around to reading the classics when I can. I hope you enjoy it. There is nothing wrong with reading something that is above your age level as long as it isn't above your reading level. I remember reading the color purple when I was in sixth grade.

Vocabulary can be a problem, but most times I can guess the meanings, and that's what a good reader should do in a situation when they don't want to grab a dictionary and look up every other word.

To be honest, I wouldn't have enjoyed the book when I was 13...It's a tricky read as far as vocabulary and references go, and is slightly inappropriate for that age...

That said, it was a fantastic book. I wouldn't say it was particularly 'funny', though. It's not meant to be...The main character is a very disturbed person (part of why it's not really a kid's book) just keep that in mind...

i believe there are no coincidences, but it is fun to say. writing stories of young girls and older men is not original by this point.

but i guess both must have known each other, cause the name Lolita is not a common American name even in that time.

Lolita was one of the required readings for one of my College Literature classes. I didn't like it in the least, though most of the pervs in my class were fascinated by it.

I guess I just couldn't past the whole child molestation factor enough to enjoy it. Perhaps it's because when I was about 13 years old a trusted adult messed with me? Yeah... that's probably the main reason I hated it. I don't think anyone who had to go through being messed with would like it.

it bugs when people say "poor Humbert! its the childs fault, she was the seducer!!"

the adult should have sense enough to teach a child right from wrong
not take advantage of them

I don't really think it's either of their faults. It was unfortunate what happened to Humbert, and it was unfortunate that circumstances pushed them together. Dolores wasn't entirely innocent when Humbert got to her, after all.

That said, I have lost my copy of Lolita. I think it's floating around in my room somewhere, and God knows I can't seem to find it. That, or it's at my Grandmas and if thats the case, I really hope she doesn't decide to browse my bookshelf for some light reading XD.
