In Japanese. I often can't stand the dub voices - "Azumanga" was fine except for Osaka's accent when I listened to the dub, so I ended watching it all in Japanese. There are a few good dubs out there, but they're few and far between, sad to say. Especially those with accents not suiting the character. To use Osaka's example again, she originally had a soft Kansai dialect, but the dub voice sounded really rough by comparison. I'd have used something not dissimilar to a Liverpool accent for Osaka - it's kind of soft and sing-song. Besides, I can often catch cultural references that I'd otherwise miss because of dubs Americanizing them, and such references can often be very educational.

So I'm strictly subs-only, and avoid anything that has been hacked to bits. If they don't think a show is suitable for kids, they should leave them where they are, not kiddify them.

-i dislike half the cast of voices in Air Gear (Japanese). the lead VA is bad...apparently it was his first anime. but to use an amature for such a popular series was a bad idea.

-wasnt expecting the Japanese voices in Naruto to be so deep and off for the characters (my opinion). i was expecting something more adolescent. instead i am Hit with with voices that are very obviously from grown adults.

-as for Sakura from CCS.
of course you are going to prefer an exaggerated high pitched voice from an adult voice actor.
the english dub was preformed by an actual 12 year old. therefore she sounded like an actual child.

japanese kids dont sound like Anime characters.

I usually prefer all of my anime to be in English, but there's one exception I'll make- Cardcaptor Sakura. I cannot stand the dub, aside from maybe two or three characters. The voices are wrong for each character, and some of the characters sound much older than they really are. The only exception to THAT is the dub of the second movie, where the entire cast was changed. That dub was pretty good, and best of all, featured no edits to the story. :).

i prefer Kagome in English.
i have no idea what is up with her voice in Japanese.

Truthfully, I would much rather prefer Japanese over English, the English voice overs just seem really bad to me and no matter how hard I try I can't get used the the English voices.

I was exposed to the dub for "Cardcaptors" and cite that as my first anime that I ever watched. Unfortunately, I didn't know about all the changes, and even pronounced Sakura wrong right along with them... o.O; I got chewed out by my cousin's boyfriend for it, and I didn't realize my mistake. -_-;

Since then, I've read the manga and seen a bit of the Japanese version..."Cardcaptors" is pretty much an abomination in my eyes now. :P I mean, they changed an awful lot, edited out an awful lot - it's practically a dumb, censored verison. I simply don't care for that kind of editing.

I do tend to watch dubs, but when it comes down to it, I watch equal in dubs and subtitles...since dubbing either ruins it, or I like to hear both for one anime, or there aren't any dubs in existence (which is fine by me). I do believe good dubs exist, and I have seen them.

I honestly hate some of the more high-pitched voices in Japanese, but hearing an English voice try to go that high is even more annoying sometimes. :P

Oh god...this subject is a weird one for me. Let me first just say this - hating on all dubs doesn't make you cool. If only I had a dollar for every time someone laughed at me/called me "inferior"/otherwise was an ass because I said I liked the FMA dub...>.<;

See...I have this thing with voices. I have an ear for telling voices apart, as well as for whether or not a voice fits a person. In real people, sometimes an unfitting voice amuses me...but in fictional characters, it bothers me. A lot. And I can hear this in both Japanese and English...as well as any other language I know well enough to recognize the accent.

So let me just say - I did not like the original FMA voices. They were okay; not the worst I've ever heard, but still...I could hear that Ed was voiced by a woman. I could tell very clearly. Al sounded like a five-year old girl. He wasn't much better in the dub, but at least he sounded like a little BOY. Mustang's voice was too low. Winry's voice was SQUEAKY.

I'm not about to say the dub was PERFECT, but really...no voice cast is EVER perfect. I AM gonna say the dub was pretty damn good, though. I liked it one hell of a lot better than the original.

As for dubs that really bothered me - the Ghost in the Shell movie from 1995. Most of the voices were pretty good, but there was one that I REALLY couldn't stand, and sadly...it happened to be Motoko. She sounded so WHINY...it was horrible. D: And it completely ruined some of my favorite lines from her. For instance:
If you're familiar with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's version of her voice, try and imagine what that line would sound like. That dramatic, serious voice, saying something like that. Funny!
Then imagine it in a kind of nasally whine. Then you've got something closer to what was ACTUALLY heard. DX

I loved the Stand Alone Complex dub, though. It took me a while to get used to...yet oddly enough, even though the English and Japanese voices for the characters are wildly different in some cases, they all fit very well. And since I do not understand the terms they use in the Japanese version, I need subtitles. And when it's a choice between subtitles or a dub I actually like...I would rather watch the dub.

Another that really bothered me was Naruto...but both versions bug me, really. It's just that the dub bothers me a little more.

I LIKED Sakura's dub voice, actually. In the beginning, when she was supposed to be annoying? DAMN, was she ever annoying. It accentuated that quality of hers quite well. XD; But after a while, even I got used to it...and as she stopped being a useless Sasuke fangirl, her voice seemed less annoying. I liked how that worked out. I also liked Naruto's dub voice - it was perfect for the annoying-yet-oddly-charismatic-kid effect. I hated Kakashi's dub voice, though. He didn't sound like the laid-back prematurely old guy he is.
Actually, now that I think about it...for the most part, I kinda liked the dub voices for the younger characters, but hated them for the older characters.

AND THEN THERE'S TOBI. It'll be years before they come to him in the dub, but...for his Japanese voice? I'm 50/50 on it, really. On the one hand...it doesn't sound very Tobi-like at all. Really, really off...and annoying. On the other hand...it WOULD explain why Deidara has such a short temper with him...XD;

if you have issues with dubbing.
it shouldnt just be English, its should be any Language.

I think companies try their best to provide with the best voice actor/actress. It's not that easy to find that lucky person who will voice talk for an series. (especially an imported one!) Japan does have it easy since some companies do use big, popular, wide celebrities as their singers. (I don't see any of our American celebrities helping out! xD.)

if they did
people would complain about celebrities doing the voices... :? even though a lot of celebs are good and get excited about being in an animation their kid will watch. and a lot of them are great singers.

only thing is. with nation wide animated movies.
i would like to see more focus on actual Voice Actors who have been VAing for years. not just have a celebrity be directed to sound like they always do. that is more of a studio fault, since - like i mentioned celebs are excited to try out voicing, but end up getting type casted as themselves.


most of the impressions i get with Anime fans is "its not Japanese therefore it sux by default"
none really seem to notice faults with a Japanese dub, nor take the time to hear why a certain voice was chosen for a Dub (from english to spanish) in the first place.

i get the idea that someone can have a preference, and a lot of mature fans show me that. not trying to guilt anyone. but when you just read comments from spoiled ones of how something is "ruined" or how they "hate" or "i want to strangle/kill"
it gets bothersome.

lol just glad i didnt get sucked into being some kind of otaku in my early net years. seeing everyone spaz out really drove me away from it. and made me like anime in small doses.

I only watched Full Moon and Ouran in Japanese. I watch Naruto in english and Japanese. I've seen One Piece in only English and I prefer Sailor Moon in Japanese. I only like Death Note in Japanese too.

Japanese is better cuz i like watch in oryginal language but with polish subbs :D

The only anime I can think of that I like more in English is Golden Boy because the dub is just soooo hilarious it kills me everytime. XD

Better is original so japanese :D
