Colored Pencils

Hi, I'm a big fan of colored pencils, especially the Prismacolor brand. Here lately though, I've become less impressed with the Prismacolor brand because of the wood quality. Atleast I believe that to be the problem. I'll sharpen my pencil, and then the tip will fall off or half the wood break away. Not cool. I use a metal sharpener so I don't believe it's that, and I like ex-acto knives, only it takes so much of the pencil away so fast.

I absolutely hate Crayola. The pigment is dull and you bear down so much to achieve the desired color that there are impressions all over the paper. Gah!

What are some other fantastic brands of colored pencils

I've never used Prismacolor pencils before. I always used regular old cheapie colored pencils, they work fine for me. I use watercolor pencils occasionally too. I like those very much and I got them for christmas.I would like to try a different brand especially Prismacolor pencils, since I use Prismacolor markers, however I don't use colored pencils too much. This is because I'm still in a " find which suits you best mood".

The only colored pencils I've used are crayola and prismacolor, so I don't really have a lot of comparisons to go on. Because Prismas are a lot waxier, the colors come out heavier and richer, however, I do agree with you that the lead tends to break a lot because the lead is so soft. Its a bit annoying, but since I don't use colored pencils that much anymore (ever since I started cg'ing) its not that big of a deal.

Crayolas are better than prismas if you use them right.

If you do a soild color base, the color, it'll turn out to be georgous.
(Solid, as in, press so hard with the lightest shade of that colour you have)

Remember white is a tint/shade of every colour.
So sometimes you'll have to use white as your bass.
^^

You have to have a heavy hand to use crayola pencils, imo.
You can't get the true colour enless you press as hard as you can with it.

Prisma's are too costly and it's not worth it.
They have too much wax. XD;

I've seen way too many people abuse Prismas.
It's a shame really.

Hence why I like Crayolas.
They're cheap, affordable, and look better than prismas.
^^

I'd have to disagree when you say that crayolas look better than prismacolors.

No way crayola can get the richness and depth of color that prismacolors can achieve.

Hmmm i had the same problem with prismacolor pencil crayons . They always break off and when you sharpen them it breaks until you have like no pencil left and your forced to go out and buy more i suggest using Laurentin it works very well for me in some areas you might have to prss harder but atleast it wont break =D
and crayolas also work though the pigement is quite dull .................................................. .................................................. ...... so yah pce easy

Hard leaded pencils just acheive a different effect than soft waxed pencils. Personally I don't like Prismacolors by themselves, but that's just me. I like a nice soft grainy look.

I use a combination of Prismacolors, Prang and Rosearts. Fewer of the former and more of the latter two.

Hmmm...I've never actually tried Prang brand, but I loved how smooth their crayons are. I think next time I go to Wal-Mart or Michael's I'll look there for some.

  • The only coloured pencils I use are crayola @[email protected]; mostly because they're cheap, easy to find and come in alot of colours.

I don't have problems with colour quality (well, sometimes. But thats only because I 'blend' them with markers, and occasionally forget that pending light colours with a 'skin toned' marker just doesn't work).
I've gotten better results with my $15 set of 74 crayolas then I've gotten with my $50 set of 24 Derwent, and I've used a Prisma' once.
and I dunno. It wasn't as much of a revelation as every one says it is.

I'll admit, Crayola are sucky at times. and I think you uh. Need to know something about colour theory + blending to get them to work for you.

I <3 my set of cheapo pencils.

BUT, I would like to give a full set of prisma/ 'better' brand pencils ago.
Just so see what they're like. I just need to win some kind of large money prize first xD

Yea, I've been experimenting with color by using matte board (which comes in grey, grey-blue, clay, and brown). I guess I should buy a set of crayola too and experiment over the summer with the different types of sets. Personally, I prefer Prismacolors because they look like paint. :3

Jitsumi1221 04-09-2007 02:39 AM

humm there is a type of prismacolor coloring pencil that has a bit of coating on the lead so it doesn't break so easily (like when you drop the pencil on a hard surface) called Verithin. i actually like those a bit better because I'm not constantly sharpening and still get the nice rich color of prisma.

though i am quite fond of my harder lead crayola pencils for little things i do for myself ^^;; i like the grainy look

Oh, and Verifines are really nice as well.

I like a harder pencil myself. Prangs are sort of chalky, beautifull smooth and they are very easy to blend. But I don't think they come in as many colors--at least I've only been able to find 12-color sets locally. Then again, I don't have any good stores around. The Michaels near me has a dinky little 2d arts section that makes me sad and my WalMart has better quality supplies in their office section.

  • I love prismas and all, but they're too expensive for me, so I've grown accustomed to using Crayola because of their price.

I used to flip between Crayola and Roseart, and that was a mistake. Roseart are by far the shittiest colored pencils one can find. Though, Roseart merchandise is just shitty to begin with. Their crayons are too waxy/not enough pigment and break too easly under pressure. They also leave streaks of the pure pigment. The colored pencils just have shitty quality in general-- the lead breaks too often, and the wood isn't sturdy enough. And the markers just dry out too quickly after x-amount of use.

So I can at least conclude from my experience that as far as cheaper colored pencils go, Crayola > Roseart.

xD And I have had the exact opposite experience. I prefer the color of Rosearts over Crayola as well.

  • I guess as far as the various medias go, it takes opinion to find people with similar experience to get the advice you desire. >w<

Though, I do find it incredibly odd that you've had luck with Rosearts, stiletto.

Oh man, I have little brand-loyatly to any company... except prismacolor. I don't like hearing it bashed (even though I know this isn't bashing, lol - my feelings are just that strong).

Anybody who says these pencils a crap, you're probably not using them right. The idea of colored pencils is definitely not to lay out a flat surface. No... little thing called blending. If you want flats, get a marker. :P If you want real colored pencil effectiveness, study up on color theory. And, well, nothing blends like prismas - gah, but that color, everything else is so dull in comparison. I use a combination of the Verithins and the regulars.

My only problems with PRisma comes from thier markers, the colors on the label tend to be lighter than the actual color.

That said, I'm a huge brand loyalist for this company. Nothing else has ever matched them in terms of my quality and preference.

I mean, sure the pencils are pricy, but I'm a heavy user, and a set still alsts me for four or five years. You just have to sharpen them right - use the knife, and if you need a finer point, use the sandpaper. But be really careful with the knives, scrape lightly, and take a long time practicing. I never risk running my Prismas through electric sharpeners. It kills them way too fast.

After trying Prisma, I'll say I'm never going back to Prang, RoseARt, or Crayola.

Self-plug, but this was all done in Prisma pencils:

Jitsumi1221 04-09-2007 05:45 AM

*snort* lol so funny ming. i dunno prisma's always drove me nuts cause I'm pretty heavy handed when i color (probably because I'm trying to make sure I'm keeping marker flat to surface most of the time to try and do less annoying streakyness ^^;; ). so when i first bought them it drove me absolutely insane with the lead crumbling and breaking so often.

Lolm yeah, I color SUPER lighthanded to get down all the tones I need beforeI begin to even think about burnishing. I'll admit, prismas aren't for the heavy-handed.

Also, don't letyour pencils fall to the grounda nd such. It causes the softer 'lead' to break inside, so when you sharpen off the wood, the lead tip falls out - you're like "wtf" . They're pro-quality and kinda hafta be treated as sch.

That said, verithins can take a lot more abuse because of thier harder makeup.

stilettolover 04-09-2007 07:34 AM

I'm extremely light handed myself and I still don't like how Prismacolors look alone. I prefer to use them with hard leaded pencils because I feel I get richer colors that way than using either pencil alone. The few pieces I've done in Prismas alone I've felt the color was rich... but was inconsistant. Maybe it's because I'm so used to harder pencils that I just don't use them right, but then again I don't really want to get that used to them.

I start with a base of RoseArts to get myself started, then where I really want strong color I'll use prismas, then back to RoseArts, and I'll finish with Prangs.

I don't have any recent colored pencil art to plug. Mayhaps I will do something. xD

Jitsumi1221 04-09-2007 08:05 AM

*nods* aye i think i did drop one of the colors i tend to use alot (red) and i was going absolutely stark raving mad when i had to resharpen every 5 second because lead kept poiping out the end while i was trying to color >.<
oye but prisma does go over other pencils and marker really pretty so when i want to use a color i don't have in my hobo-sets i snag one from my prismacolor pencils ^^;;

actually.. i really like the prisma watercolor pencils.. fun to play with ^o^

GainaSpirit 04-09-2007 08:55 AM

I don't use a lot of colored pencil even if it's un to work with. I love the feeling they gave when I color with it. It's even more satisfying than my cg art >.< But I don't have good one. Only basic school one so... they get gave a good feeling... And I don't want to invest money on something I don't do a lot... I think I'll be more incline to invest on markers and watercolors for now

ScarletStratholme 04-09-2007 10:39 AM

Have you ever tried pastels? I used to play with colored pencils, but I really wanted something that was thicker, richer. Pastels really were fun for me. Can use both in one piece too. XD

joke-mus 04-09-2007 12:31 PM

wow, i've never used any of the brands mentioned here... maybe because i live in belgium.
my favorite brand of pencils are from Caran d'Ache... some fancy brand from switzerland. i have a box of 40 pencils from the series 'pablo', and i've had them for 6 years now? only 1 of the pencils is totally gone by using it too much. in the last 2 years i've bought seperate colors to add to my collection, mostly greys and browns.
i think i have around 65 pencils now?
and yes: colored pencils is all about blending and layering ^^

now i think about it= it's been a while since i've colored with them, should pick them up again soon ^^

Tirael 04-09-2007 02:49 PM

:F I used to use color pencils a lot... I liked prismacolors because you can do a lot more with them -> like blending colors and sometimes using alchohol to break it down a bit and make it look smoother... you can't do that with crayola.

Though I really had no problems with crayola either, they were just more limiting.

And I.... hate... pastels. I just can't stand the way I get smudges everywhere and it's a pain to clean up >__>;; Maybe that had to do with the crappy quality of the pastels I was using too... was almost like a crayon.

LunaMiel 04-09-2007 04:15 PM

  • I have a set of prismacolor pencils that I hardly ever used. I mean, I really do hate sharpening every five seconds, its really a pain. I guess though, because of what Ming, said, is that I'm not treating them like I should. XD

I eventually got tired of battling with prismas and went to crayola. I color more cell style anyway, so I kinda like the results I can get from those. I'm more of a CG colorist now, but this is what I've done with crayola.
    http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ullybroken.jpg

I unno, I like the results well enough and the colors blend just fine for me.
