Fanfiction: You know you love it
It is one of those things that is just always there, even after a book series is finished.
It was my very first internet addiction xD And I'm proud to say that I still love reading (sometimes writing) fanfiction. Of course, what I read tends to bounce around a little ^^; My personal preference is something that isn't heavily detailed but has enough details to keep me reading. Also, I like when the author clearly takes time by producing long chapters and clearly uses spell check ^^ Pet Peeves about fanfiction:
Ideas to discuss: What you like about fanfiction in general What are your favorite fanfiction sites? Who is your favorite fanfiction author? What is your favorite fanfiction? Do you write fanfiction? Have any pet peeves about reading/writing fanfiction? |
Actually, most of the time I prefer original (usually slash) fiction over fanfiction... purely because my tastes tend to be so different that even if I found a pairing I liked, no one would ever write them. But I got hooked on House not too long ago and now I can't get enough of the fanfiction. And on the plus side, if you read it on LiveJournal, then you miss most of the godawful writers who post on ff.net.
As for my favorite author, that one's a tough call... but everything that Namaste writes is pure gold, so I'd recommend her to anyone reading House fanfiction. And as someone who doesn't write but only reads, I do indeed have several pet peeves. For instance, I can't stand it when a writer tries to "tell" instead of "show" you the action. The plus side on this one is that I can usually tell when an author is doing this within the first few sentences and can stop wasting my time before I get too far into the fic. |
All I wright is Fan Fiction, I have so many different ones going, Right now it's Naruto, FF7 AC, Tokyo Mew Mew. and Last year it was Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, and Yu-Gi-Oh! I need another pass time.
|
I'm very particular about fan fiction... and fandom in general. I don't read most fan fiction, because it's so poorly written. Nowadays, any thirteen year old with a word processor can type up some gibberish, post it on fanfiction.net, and call it a "story." Which seems to happen a lot.
There's no quality to fan fiction anymore. The Mary Sues, the butchering of the English language... It's just terrible. I've written a few fan fictions in my life, but it's only for one fandom... which isn't a book. It's a video game that has so many open ends and plot holes and things that any author could run absolutely wild with. When people with some actual talent start writing fan fiction again, maybe I'll start reading it again. |
I'm really picky about fanfiction. xD I prefer if they don't involve original characters unless they are a very strong evil character--and then only if we rarely or never see the story from their eyes. I normally don't like stories that aren't written from the perspective of the main character from the original. The one big exception is people writting prequels about secondary characters, or explaining time-lapses for them. And once I read an excellent re-write of FY from Nuriko's perspective. The same author also wrote FY from some of the other characters perspectives but they weren't as well written and they were boring afterwards.
I've started liking alternate universe stories. There's one by [email protected] about Inu Yasha in the modern world, Kagome as a pop star. Ammmaaazing. Unfortunately Pinku's really busy and only does like two chapters a year. They're long chapters, though. I dislike two things: Slash and self inclusion. I find slash pointless and self inclusion usually ends up being some steamy quasi-romance novel-esque fantasy that belongs in the writers journal not on fanfiction.net. I like fanfiction.net and mediaminer because the people who post there usually actually update their stories, unlike random personal sites. |
Re: Fanfiction: You know you love it
In fanfiction, I love the variety of writing styles you come across, and how friendly and wonderful it is! my fav fanfiction site is www.fanfiction.net, adultfanfiction.net, www.fictionalley.org
I love sooo many fanfictions out there, that I dont really have a favourite, I've tried to write fanfiction on occasion, and failed miserablly, so i took up the task of doing a great job beta-ing my friends fanfictions. |
xD I write, but rarely 0-o Apparently I was fairly popular in the Naruto section until I deleted my main story xD.
I'm picky on what I read, but I read fanfiction to escape from books most of the time (or I will be utterly bored). I like reading fun stuff, but I usually pick the long, completed stories so I don't have to follow the updating ^_^; |
I write fanfiction! The only things that bother me are if the person writes it like this:
Person: *walks in, sits down* Or if they have really horrid spelling. I know that not everyone has perfect english and writing is a good way to anchor the language in your mind, to use it. Spell checkers, however, are MADE for that purpose... XD;;; A good fic is a really nice thing, when you find one that's well written and "keeps" you, draws you in. |
I can honestly say I have no taste for fanfiction. Of course I also don't enjoy watching anime or reading manga. While I appreciate the art style I think the watching and reading of it is about as boring and mindless as anything I can think of. But I'm wierd like that.

I agree with most of what you've said, except the part about there not being any good fanfiction anymore. It's out there--it's just very cleverly disguised, and you have to look long and hard (which mostly I don't have the energy for, but occasionally I do). I too used to write fanfictions, and cowrite them as well with my best friend. They were few and far between, though. But we did used to read them on FF.net quite avidly. We found this particular Blue Seed fanfiction that was absolutely wonderful, by a woman named Ruri Hoshino. It lasted so long, but she was very thorough about the characters and the plot was very intriguing and... I could go on for days. I would recommend it to anyone who's seen the series and who loved it as much as we did. Anyway, back to fanfictions now--I have to say that I'm not terribly impressed with 80-85% of the stuff out there right now. In fact, quite the opposite. But I'm not going to say that all of it is utter crap, because frankly, that's just not true. I can't remember any names right off the bat, but I read a short Hana Kimi fanfic recently that made me positively melt. What I'm trying to say is don't give up hope, and those of you good fanfic writers out there should keep on trucking, and maybe one day we'll see an end to the drivel and idiocy that passes for fanfictions nowadays. |
I've written a few one shot fanfics in my time which I posted on fanfiction.net but they were for an anime not a book.
|
I love fanfiction, especially when it caters to my tastes. >D
What I don't love is when a person inserts their own characters into a story (Harry Potter, for example) and rips apart the story with their perfection. I'm all for living in the book and I've read quite a few stories that were pretty awesome with their own characters in it but usually you just find some lovestruck OC bent on saving the main character from a life of misery and solitude. I've never sat down and actually wrote out all my ideas, yet I have had quite a few fanfictions in mind. Most of them are for anime, though. I'm a big reader of books, but anime is easier to manipulate into your own writing style while still keeping the character personalities untouched. |
I don't read much fanfiction...but my best friend, ma-chan, does. and so does our other good friend, sama.
We all write. Sama is the only one that posts her where people can see it though. Ma-chan and I write fanfic together and are too shy/whatever to post them up where anyone other than us can read them. I'm getting around to working up the courage to post one... my inuyasha fic is the first long term one (longer than 5 chapters; it's got too many XD) and it involved and OC falling in love with Sessh. *ish lame* My hp fic involves...well...almost nothing but OCs XD. I just use the setting and a few select side characters (remus, sirius, severus, dumbledore and that's basically it). Which is how most of my fanfics are. XD |
I love fanfiction. Well, good fanfic. I frequent various series of anime, books, tv shows, etc. I like humor stuff, mostly. And love stories. I can't justify my love for it at all, and I feel like I waste too much of my time on it, but I love it. So there.

Ah, fanfiction. For me, it's a complicated relationship. Love to write it, hate to read the majority of it.
OOC Characters peeve me off the most. I try my darndest to refrain from it, and most of the time, I stay out of the red zone. It's a hard task to accomplish, but then again, you see people taking characters and making them do things that they would probably never do in a million years, much less, in this lifetime. Sadly, I used to be one of those once upon a time when I was obsessed about everything I came in contact with, but I KNOW BETTER NOW! As for the original characters, I don't have a horrible problem with it seeing as I use one of my own for a fanfic I'm currently writing. Now, I don't exploit them like most Harry Potter/Naruto fanfictions I've read in which the girl just goes up to the hottest male character in the novel and begins to flirt with him and the next thing you know, they're making out and doing other random stuff. That's just exploitation of the original author/creator's plot and characters and it turns so many people off. x_x; I do have an OC in my current Naruto fanfic, as just previously stated, however. Yes, there is a romantic twist with one of the male characters, but it doesn't actually set in until maybe 15 or so LENGTHY chapters into the whole scenario. No, it's not really one of the main ones, and there is no given canon pairing within Naruto that justifies that this character could have a relationship with a woman in the anime/manga. So, it's safe to say that I've taken a liberty that had a wide opening, and it wasn't so dangerous to explore in. But yeah. . . I've started to get tired of writing fanfiction, and the major reason that I can't stand writing it anymore is that my readers really don't appreciate the time I put into it. I got harrassed once because I didn't update soon enough. Sorry to say, I have a life outside of writing -- I, like most high school students have schoolwork to attend to, places to be, things to see, etc. Also, I've been shot down because I decided to set a story aside, and the girl who reviewed me ranted about how I had ruined her evening because I had no inspiration anymore. I do still write, but it's not much for the public anymore and just for my own pleasure or my friends who actually appreciate my style of writing and the time and effort I put into it. Perhaps when the fanfiction world quits being so terribly critcizing over the tiniest things (not even pertaining to the story, majority of the time) and gains some real talent in story-telling, I just might feel obligated to hop on the bandwagon again. |
If I really really love a series and want it to be explored in an aspect, I look for fanfiction. I get nervous though because fanfiction can be truly horrible. Which is why I rarely go on fanfiction.net to search for fics; on livejournal there are groups and quite a few good authors are on there; I usually stalk them back to their fanfiction.net accounts and then read their stories, and then their Favorites section. And if I find good fics in the Favorites section, I look at the authors of THOSE fics and then read THEIR Favorites and etc etc and there you go, a chain of a bazillion wonderful fanfics. :)
Pet peeves? Just go to fanfiction.net and look by a series and see all the crappy summaries, uncreative genre-telling, bad spelling, sugary/badangst OCs, and plots. Especially beware of high school AUs. And ones that center on romance. Summaries can tell you a lot about how the authors address those topics in the fic. For example: "___ loves ____ but he can't tell him!! So on Valentines day he decides to get in front of the whole school to profess his love!! Will ____ accept?! Plz review!! ____x____ 4ever!" "He took a deep breath. Whatever events lay beyond the door in front of him would either result in utter joy or devestating humiliation. Knowing that the person in mind was worth either of that, ___ pushed open the door, lyrics of the love song clutched in his hand. Romance, one-shot, ___x____" What I don't like about a lot of fanfiction is that most are really pointless. I mean... okay, fine sugary waff. But with no character introspection? Nothing truly interesting? I really really LOVE fanfiction that just wows you, introducing "what if" scenarios that develop very plausibly and give you different insights to the character. Creative fanfiction. Fanfiction should be created in mind of the character, NOT just to act out your own little fantasies of what you think should have happened. There's a line you need to cross to actually bring in that character into your story, so it's not just "___ felt happy! ____ loved her! They leaned forward to kiss" but... you know. Write so that not anybody's name could fill in the blank, but the specific character that you're talking about. |
Couldn't agree more Wisty. :3
Another thing that irks me to high heaven. . . a story that is solely built on romance and romance alone. I'll admit, I'm a helpless romantic, and I know it good and well, but it gets absolutely ridiculous when all the story gives to the reader is a non-stop fling between characters. WHERE IS THE ACTION!? I'm so sick of reading Naruto fanfictions that have no fight scenes but are so solely bent on Sasuke and Sakura having children by the handful. BAH. And another thing. Fanfictions now a days make out relationships to be flawless. Last time I checked, having a significant other has its problems as well as its happy qualities. No relationship is a utopia. So where are the fights that most relationships have?! D: I'm getting on my soapbox. . . XD; |
I like well-written fanfiction because it is a way to keep the characters alive even after the series has ended. I like to write for myself to do this but I won't post them because they are never completed and I know they are not that great. They fill a need, though. I also like using fanfiction to create characters that I think should have been in series or to write myself in somehow. Makes it rather fun, don't cha know.

Fanfiction.net is one of my frequently visited bookmarks, as in I go there at least twice everyday. My favorite stories and authors are on my alert list and still I browse through at least 4 fandom for newer ones.
And of course I've got lots of fanfic communities on my friends page on livejournal. My day basically starts and ends with reading fanfics. yeah I have no life. |
My fondness for particular fanfiction is pretty much based on luck. I mean one day I can browse the whole day w/o finding any particular interest. The other day, I might find some interesting stories to keep reading. I love reading Hey Arnold fanfiction. Not all of them, but some of them. Personally, I've already liked the series, and so therefore, when reading about interesting complication of what can possibly happen after the series end is fairly interesting. Although it does deal with sugary love concept most of the time, I find it more interesting when the author alludes to a lot of facts that happened in the series, even the littlest fact like Gerald's dad's name or whatever.

<3 Fanfics
A few years ago I was !addicted! to fanfics. It's not even funny. I stopped reading for a while, but I've taken the hobby up again. I only read Harry Potter fanfiction. I'm a slash addict, but usually only because the greatest plots come with slash, since it's extremely popular (watch, I'm going to get loads of people saying they hate slash). Has anyone read Green Eyes Sublime or If You are Prepared? IYAP is by Cybele, and it's on her site (jsut google the title). Both stories are... just beautiful, and Snarry, just so you know. <3
|
I read ALOT of fanfiction. Mostly Naruto. There are a few other ones that I happen to know some things about, like books I've read. But most of the time it's Naruto. For some reason, I'm just addicted to Naruto fanfiction, but I'm okay with missing and not watching the Anime and not reading the Manga. I like the fanfiction story lines better. >.< And I'm pretty picky. I will only read no pairings, but if there is a pairing, it would need to be one I like.
I sadly write no fanfiction. I hardly write at all. But a story I'm writing right now is still in progress at the first stage. Thinking of characters and the details and events that will keep the story going. Heh and I work really slow by the way. Two characters are done...after two days of working. >> |
Personally I generally detest fanfiction with a burning passion. Why? because very few I've ever seen were anything other than litiary porn. It gets particularily irritating when someone will try to have me critique yaoi anime fan fics. It boils down to this for me, do I have a moral objection to there fan fics, not on principal ( except when they rape the entire charechter concepts of the charechters bending personalities to their wills to the point where they may as well just start masturbating and save themselfs the time of writing) however as a straight male I have no desire to read it, same way as most straight people male or female don't have a desire to watch porn of the same type. Then what i hate more is when they accuse me of being a homophobe after telling them that I have no desire to read their gay rape fan fic (yeah... this happened). Never mind the fact that I hang out with at least 3 gay guys on a reagular basis... (side note I hate idiots).
Now if I were to encounter a well written fan fic that encmpassed a well thought through and origional sorry line that did not rape the personaties or the charechters, I might find it enjoyable, however thus far I've not really seen any. |
The only fanfiction I've ever repeatedly enjoyed reading is the Shoebox Project. And even that lost some of it's flavor in later chapters. It takes a lot for fanfic to hold my attention, especially serials like that. Over the top unnatural romances scare me away straight off, as well as Mary Sue-like characters. As much as you love the guys you're writing about, sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and admit that they're not your soulmate.
But, I will admit to writing a piece or two of fanfiction. Thankfully they all cover subjects that are usually looked over by authors. They don't go raving about pairings and ships, or put the characters in obscene situations in modern NYC. I just like to look inside a character's mind during an important scene and experiment with their thoughts. It's much more believable that way, staying true to the author's intentions. More than anything, that is the main rule of good fanfic. |
