Time seemed to pass slower than ever, that or maybe Shane never cared to pay attention to such a trivial detail of her daily routine. When the bell finally rang for lunch, she made her way to the cafeteria. The students were filing in and moving to their group's table.
It only took Shane a moment to see Avice and his friends starting to gather. Their table had the most eclectic group. There was Avice of course, the school's sweetheart, a couple athletes, as well as a few childhood friends that seemed to have nothing in common with the rest.
She took a few steps and suddenly felt a bit nervous. What would she talk to them about? Such a thought made her worry about their soon to be interaction as her feet slowed to a stop for a moment.
Maybe this wasn't a good idea she thought quickly as she prepared to turn but stopped when she heard her name. It wasn't Avice but the voice was not uncommon to her. She looked up to see her science lab partner, who was also one of Avice's friends, waving her over. Jonathon, no he went by Jon, was a familiar face. At this point the others looked up waiting for her to share their table.
"Here goes nothing," she muttered inaudibly to herself as she walked forward, taking a seat across from Jon and diagonal from Avice. The group of people made Shane feel welcome as they all greeted her before continuing their conversation.
"Shane?" Avice spoke softly to get her attention.
She blinked and looked up, "Yes, Avice?" she replied.
"You're okay right, I feel terrible about yesterday."
"I'm fine, don't worry."
"Well, on my way home I saw something I thought you would like. It's not much but it's sort of an I'm sorry." he moved to pull a small box from his black, school issue, breifcase-like bag. He sat the box on the table in front of her and waited for her to open it before speaking again.
She blushed slightly as she thought about what might be in the box. A gift from Avice, could she be any luckier? She reached forward and lifted the box pulling it closer to her as she removed the lid.
Inside was a gorgeous hairpin, red roses with ribbon and other beautiful accents. She smiled as she pulled it out of the box to get a better look. She looked over it happily for several moments before she thought, "Something this pretty would never look good on plain me."
With that she lost a bit of her good mood, which she fought to hide from the others. She'd tuned basically everyone out, but just then something she never thought she would hear, "That'd look great on her, Avice." She looked up to see Jon speaking and noticed the other's agreeing.
"You really think it would look good?" Shane asked after a moment. She blushed at the thought when everyone agreed. The school sweetheart, Anna, got up and moved over into the seat next to Shane. "Let me put it on for you," she commented as she picked up the hairpin.
"You know Shane, I couldn't tell before but... I wish I had your facial features, they're soft but very pretty." Anna noted as she pulled Shane's hair back and clipped the hairpin in. "I never really noticed because your hair was always in your face."
Shane blushed slightly at the compliments, "I never thought about it. Does the hairpin really look good on me?" she asked slowly as she looked to the others at the table. Jon and the others nodded while Avice replied, "It looks great."
Once Anna moved back to her seat conversation continued changing topics several times while the group laughed. Shane couldn't believe her luck. The bell rang eventually and before the group went their seperate ways they invited Shane to sit with them again.

Shane smiled as she talked to her friends at lunch. She wasn't as shy or reserved as she used to be. Several months had passed since the fateful day she first spoke to Avice. Many things had changed in that period of time.
She wore contacts more often then glasses after she learned she had pretty facial features. She found out she wasn't as plain as she thought she was and didn't want to hide behind her glasses anymore. Another thing was that she wore her hair back more often. The hairpin was a regular accessory for her as well as many other clips that she'd gotten since that day.
Shane seemed to have more confidence in herself. It was easier for her to talk to people and make friends. She wasn't the most popular girl in school but she was no where near invisible.
The biggest change however was the fact that Avice was no longer at their school. His father had received a large promotion which required his family to move a few cities away. They were never anything more than friends, but she cherished the time she got to spend with him. If he'd never run into her she might still be the same, unhappy girl she always was.
She thought about those days pretty regularly when she let her mind wander during class. Those were good memories, some of her favorites.
"Shane?" a familiar voice beckoned to get her attention.
She looked up with a smile, "Yeah, Jon?" she asked.
"Would you want to go to a movie with me this weekend?" he asked a bit nervously. He realized she'd had a crush on Avice and even though she wore the hairpin regularly, Jon wanted to try asking her out.
She smiled after a moment and gave a slight nod, "I'd like that Jon."
---------------------------------------
Avice meant a lot to Shane even though he never knew it. He was her first crush, the first boy that made her heart beat faster with just a smile, and the person who indirectly helped her out of her shell. She would never forget him.
