A faint sigh escaped Shane's pale lips as she sat in class, her mind wandering to daydreams of a life that she would more likely enjoy. She never thought seriously about any of her daydreams because as far as she was concerned, she was plainer than plain and such things would never happen.

She had dull black hair that reached barely past her shoulders with bangs covering her forehead, thin glasses that hid her generic blue eyes, and was only average in height. She didn't really think much of her appearance and quite frankly, the school's uniform did not help. A knee length light gray skirt with a matching blazer worn over a white dress shirt with black tie, tall black socks and standard issue black shoes.

Shane was the type of girl that everyone seemed to... overlook. Studying was her main priority thanks to the standards her parents set, she wasn't trying hard enough unless her grades were remarkably above average. This made her home life less than desirable, barely managing to keep a C average even when fully applying her self.

Shane was ordinary but she always imagined herself as the ugly duckling, she spent her time waiting for the day when she would be a beautiful swan. How long would she have to wait though?

The bell rang and drew her attention away from her daydreams just in time to see the last student enter the class room. Avice was the boy that every girl hoped to date, but always got turned down. He was the school's basketball star and equally gifted when it came to learning. Her eyes lit up slightly and her heart fluttered every time she saw him, he did not know of course. She watched him silently as he took his seat, she always looked forward to the classes she had with him.

The teacher began their lesson and Shane's mind half-heartedly switched it's attention over. Had she continued looking she might have noticed the slight side glance Avice made in her direction, but she wasn't that lucky. Even if she were, she'd assume he was looking at the girl sitting just behind her or the one just beside. Seriously, why would he be looking at someone as plain as Shane.

When school let out, Shane walked silently down the same streets as always heading straight home. The people she considered friends at school never really spoke to her outside of class. It was fine by her, she had almost nothing in common with them anyway. Her left arm swayed ever so slightly as she clutched her black briefcase-like book bag.

Step after step, she slowly rounded a corner to find herself being knocked off her feet, her glasses falling to the ground with a soft cracking sound. "Ouch," her soft voice slipped out in a somewhat displaced manor as she made impact with the ground. She winced slightly, concrete was not the softest substance of course, as her hands searched for her glasses.

"Are you alright?" a rushed response came from her assailant. Of course she wasn't alright! How could someone be so careless? Her eyes finally lifted to see the face of the person that pummeled her. After finally finding her glasses she pulled them on to be immediately disappointed at the broken left lens before looking up. Her eyes widened as she recognized Avice through the cracked lenses. "Oh, um..." she was speechless for a moment as her brain digested the realization. "Yes, I'm fine." she finally added as she started moving to get up.

A hand stretched out, offering to help her to her feet. "I'm really sorry.... I should have been watching where I was going. We have a class together right?" he asked after thinking for a moment, it was hard to ignore the girl's uniform.

"Well, we ha.. have a couple... actually..." she spoke softly stuttering a bit as her eyes shifted to and from the boy as she felt her face starting to turn a pale shade of red. She looked toward the ground, trying to mask the blush that spread slowly across her cheeks.

"I'm sorry, I don't really pay attention to what's going on around me... what's your name?" he questioned.

Shane thought for a moment that she was daydreaming but that idea quickly faded as she realized how much falling had hurt. She finally touched the outstretched hand slowly, allowing him to help her up. "Sh... Shane." she stuttered again.

"I'm sorry Shane, are you sure you're okay?" after she replied with a nod he smiled. Such an alluring and adorable smile it made Shane's heart melt slightly. "My name's --" he started but was quickly interrupted by Shane's interjection, "Avice. I know."

He seemed a little surprised that she knew his name, as if he was oblivious to the popularity that surrounded him. "Right, well... if you're sure you're okay, I really have to be going. It was nice -- bumping into you, Shane." he noted as he released a sincere yet awkward laugh.

She only gave a slight nod in response before she watched him run off. He was in quite a hurry, she wondered what was so important back at school. After a moment she turned and began making the trek home again. One step and then another.

She couldn't ignore the cracks that disrupted her vision but she couldn't help but smile. She'd spoken to Avice, she'd touched his hand, and to top it all off... he'd said her name, multiple times. Getting crashed into was more than worth the interaction that followed.

She had a wonderful day. Too bad she knew the next day wouldn't be as great. She had a slightly dazed and almost content expression all evening. It worried her parents that she seemed so out of it but they didn't bring it up.

She went to bed and dreamed of things that she wished would come true, but there was a reason they were dreams. When she woke up she faintly remembered the interaction but dismissed it as something that would never happen again. Once out of bed and moving around she reached for her glasses only to be reminded of their currently wrecked state. She sighed knowing she'd have to put in her contacts, a routine she'd much rather avoid but today she had no choice.

It was a day like every other day. When Shane awoke she went through her usual morning routines, ate breakfast, and then made her usual trip to school. There was however one little thing that she never knew would make a world of difference, her contacts.

She was walking slowly as always thinking the same thing as always, 'One foot in front of the other' as if she had to coax herself to attend school. Then from seemingly nowhere a foreign thought entered her mind, 'Today could be a good day too.'

Her feet stopped moving as she thought back on those words. Today could be a good day too. She started moving again, slowly at first. As she thought that phrase to herself again a small smile crossed her face and her pace turned from it's lagging pace to a steady walk.

She crossed through the same brick gateway but something was different today. In fact, the other students at her school could see it too. "Good morning, Shane!" one of her classmates chirped causing her to jump slightly. She looked up a little surprised and quickly replied, "Good morning."

How unusual it was, someone speaking to her outside of the classroom. Ignoring how unrxpected it was, it made Shane smile. "Maybe today really will be a good day after all," she told herself beneath her breath as she continued on her way onto the school's grounds.

"Shane!" someone called suddenly. It was that voice, she would know it anywhere at this point. She looked up, her eyes brightening up a bit as she saw him. "Avice, good morning!" she replied with a faint smile. Could her morning be any better? Not only did he remember her name but he was talking to her again.

They exchanged a few formalities before he introduced her to his friends. His friends were rough around the edges but generally good people and greeted her kindly, before Avice invited her to eat lunch with them that day. Lunch with Avice, how could she refuse?

After they went their seperate ways for class Shane smiled a bit more brightly, "Today is a good day." she told herself as she made her way to English. She sat through her classes patiently waiting for each bell to ring, almost counting the minutes until she could talk to him again.

Time seemed to pass slower than ever, that or maybe Shane never cared to pay attention to such a trivial detail of her daily routine. When the bell finally rang for lunch, she made her way to the cafeteria. The students were filing in and moving to their group's table.

It only took Shane a moment to see Avice and his friends starting to gather. Their table had the most eclectic group. There was Avice of course, the school's sweetheart, a couple athletes, as well as a few childhood friends that seemed to have nothing in common with the rest.

She took a few steps and suddenly felt a bit nervous. What would she talk to them about? Such a thought made her worry about their soon to be interaction as her feet slowed to a stop for a moment.

Maybe this wasn't a good idea she thought quickly as she prepared to turn but stopped when she heard her name. It wasn't Avice but the voice was not uncommon to her. She looked up to see her science lab partner, who was also one of Avice's friends, waving her over. Jonathon, no he went by Jon, was a familiar face. At this point the others looked up waiting for her to share their table.

"Here goes nothing," she muttered inaudibly to herself as she walked forward, taking a seat across from Jon and diagonal from Avice. The group of people made Shane feel welcome as they all greeted her before continuing their conversation.

"Shane?" Avice spoke softly to get her attention.

She blinked and looked up, "Yes, Avice?" she replied.

"You're okay right, I feel terrible about yesterday."

"I'm fine, don't worry."

"Well, on my way home I saw something I thought you would like. It's not much but it's sort of an I'm sorry." he moved to pull a small box from his black, school issue, breifcase-like bag. He sat the box on the table in front of her and waited for her to open it before speaking again.

She blushed slightly as she thought about what might be in the box. A gift from Avice, could she be any luckier? She reached forward and lifted the box pulling it closer to her as she removed the lid.

Inside was a gorgeous hairpin, red roses with ribbon and other beautiful accents. She smiled as she pulled it out of the box to get a better look. She looked over it happily for several moments before she thought, "Something this pretty would never look good on plain me."

With that she lost a bit of her good mood, which she fought to hide from the others. She'd tuned basically everyone out, but just then something she never thought she would hear, "That'd look great on her, Avice." She looked up to see Jon speaking and noticed the other's agreeing.

"You really think it would look good?" Shane asked after a moment. She blushed at the thought when everyone agreed. The school sweetheart, Anna, got up and moved over into the seat next to Shane. "Let me put it on for you," she commented as she picked up the hairpin.

"You know Shane, I couldn't tell before but... I wish I had your facial features, they're soft but very pretty." Anna noted as she pulled Shane's hair back and clipped the hairpin in. "I never really noticed because your hair was always in your face."

Shane blushed slightly at the compliments, "I never thought about it. Does the hairpin really look good on me?" she asked slowly as she looked to the others at the table. Jon and the others nodded while Avice replied, "It looks great."

Once Anna moved back to her seat conversation continued changing topics several times while the group laughed. Shane couldn't believe her luck. The bell rang eventually and before the group went their seperate ways they invited Shane to sit with them again.

---------------------------------------

Shane smiled as she talked to her friends at lunch. She wasn't as shy or reserved as she used to be. Several months had passed since the fateful day she first spoke to Avice. Many things had changed in that period of time.

She wore contacts more often then glasses after she learned she had pretty facial features. She found out she wasn't as plain as she thought she was and didn't want to hide behind her glasses anymore. Another thing was that she wore her hair back more often. The hairpin was a regular accessory for her as well as many other clips that she'd gotten since that day.

Shane seemed to have more confidence in herself. It was easier for her to talk to people and make friends. She wasn't the most popular girl in school but she was no where near invisible.

The biggest change however was the fact that Avice was no longer at their school. His father had received a large promotion which required his family to move a few cities away. They were never anything more than friends, but she cherished the time she got to spend with him. If he'd never run into her she might still be the same, unhappy girl she always was.

She thought about those days pretty regularly when she let her mind wander during class. Those were good memories, some of her favorites.

"Shane?" a familiar voice beckoned to get her attention.

She looked up with a smile, "Yeah, Jon?" she asked.

"Would you want to go to a movie with me this weekend?" he asked a bit nervously. He realized she'd had a crush on Avice and even though she wore the hairpin regularly, Jon wanted to try asking her out.

She smiled after a moment and gave a slight nod, "I'd like that Jon."

---------------------------------------

Avice meant a lot to Shane even though he never knew it. He was her first crush, the first boy that made her heart beat faster with just a smile, and the person who indirectly helped her out of her shell. She would never forget him.
