Hmm.. I've never seen the tenth kingdom but I do know ABC is handling it. D:
And yes, I do hope they'd take the right pace for the show. :D I don't know how they will make it appeal to the mass public though. It's really more like a hit or miss deal.. *gulps* |
I actually heard about this series for the first time the other day, and I've been dying to read it!
I've already ordered the first volume from Amazon (it only cost about £4- bargain!) and it should arrive some time this week. I'm incredibly excited! |
You should be!
I wish I could start reading it over but for the first time :XD Hey is anyone following the fables/ jack of fables crossover that just happened? I get fables in trade so I have to wait until august when the next fables trade comes out before I can read through to where the crossover starts. But I've got the comics for it |
No, I've missed it. D= I've been reading mine at the library, and I just moved and switched libraries this spring, and I don't see any Fables around, though they do have some graphic novels. I have the feeling I'm missing where a lot of them are shelved. Anyway, so I have to wait for the novel form.
|
the trade paper backs? yeah it's hard to wait.
|
Oh well, it pays off in the long run. I kind of prefer to read books that way, anyway, all nice and cohesively.

I've only read the would be prequil "1000 Nights of Snowfall". I did not like it. Almost every story is full of adult content. I feel it takes away from the stories because it's really not neccessary. Yes, I know the original tellings of most fairy tails are gritty and gorry. But this was just over kill. Not going to go into detail because if you've read it you know what I mean. Plus Snow White is the main character and narater. I jsut hate her or at least how she's portrayed in this book. Ugh she's so annoying. I don't know if the rest of the Fables series is like this but being that it takes place in modern times doesn't really interest me that much.
|
Well if you don't like the premise, the characters, the writing, the era, or the maturity level (as in mature content) of the story then don't read it. I'm not even going to try to convince you of the reasons I have for liking fables because you've already used most of them as negatives to liking the books.
And while I'll agree that the the story of the frog prince was maybe more than you wanted to know graphic detail wise, it ends up being very important to a story arc in the main book. In fact the stories Snow tells are all very important and telling of the characters of the main book fables and I would recommend "1000 Nights of Snowfall" to anyone who is a fan of fables as it helps to bring even more dimension and motive to already lovable characters. |

It's a shame really because I really wanted to like this series too. I love crazy versions of traditional fairy tails. But the adult content was over kill. It didn't add anything significant to most of the stories. Basicaly it was there for the sake of being there. I get annoyed when uneccessary content or forced situations of any kind are put into stories. I feel in some cases it's just bad writing. On the other had when a story is done well that's when you don't even notice these things as being added material. But as part of the story as a whole. But to each their own. Thank you for understanding. |
I've read a lot more since I first posted here, and some of the Jack of Fables ones too.
I read the Frog Prince's story (illustrated by James Jean) and it is so sad. It's one of my favorites. I like James Jean's art a lot now in general. He draws a lot of the covers. It's so beautiful. here's his wikipedia page: James Jean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia he has a lot of art on his website, some of it is NSFW though. |
I just saw this at a book store and wast thinking about getting it.
With all these good comments I'll have to get it. |
@nette -- there are some elements of Fables that I don't like, but overall I like the direction its gone, and the more depth they add the better it gets. I really disliked some of the stuff in the beginning, it seemed very contrived and run of the mill but they substantially improved.
I do think it would be nice for there to be more treatments of traditional stories in various medias, so say, lovers of classic myth/tales have more to choose from. @Gossy -- Thanks for the JJean link. It's hard for me to get excited about illustration these days, but I do find a lot of neat stuff over at Phantasmaphile from time to time. |
Oh I read the first one sitting in my library! I loved it. I love Rapunzal!

Personally, I rather like having the adult content in there; It may not have to be to that degree if you prefer, but I feel it is returning the stories to their roots. Sooner or later, all stories are about blood, sex, greed, love, war, and death. They took the blood out of the stories to make them acceptable to the people who had to read them to kids, but death used to be a lot more a part of reality. That's why its more a part of the stories.
@ Guivre, there's a project rewrite thing some major publishing company is doing; I don't remember the name of the company, but one of the books is Girl Meets Boy by Aly Smith. They're rewriting all sorts of myth. |
"1001 Nights" isn't really meant to be your intro- its meant to bolster the rest of the series- the fact that it can serve as one iss incidental. I'd say give the series a try since the story really is fantastic!
I know there's some comments about the "Adult themes" being too adult, but it really isn't that bad. Yes its a bit graphic at times, but that's the most concentrated one in that way. Then again, if you don't like it- you don't like it. Forcing yourself to read something when you truly don't want to isn't worth the annoyance. Personally, I LOVE it. And I got my fiance into it, and he's hooked. As for the Jack series, I had to get attached to the side-characters to like it, but its shaping up nicely. And the cross-over just came out in GraphicNovel form. :D |
