i dont think i've every had my work stolen because it's not worth stealing.
i do sign my initials though and then put a watermark of my deviantart account. on some of my pictures, it is put on the picture and others it's put off to the side where if someone wanted to steal it (haha) they could. about disclaimers, i dont have many watchers on DA and that's the only place i put my work up on. no need for disclaimers since no one would want to steal my work. if someone uses the exact same pose, i find it irritating at times. but then i realize...that's how i learned how to draw. but then there are only so many ways you can do a certain pose without it looking slightly like someone elses. |
Only recently have I started signing my works and adding a link to my DA, etc. I never felt a need to do it and I normally forgot. No one's every stolen my work so I figured I never needed much claim on it so I guess I'm not paranoid. I've never seen anyone use my same exact poses or faces too but I don't think that's plagiarism but what you said how even the lines in her face was the same, that's a little mean I guess but you should take it as a compliment!
And yea, I think it's silly when people overreact about their work as if everyone who can't draw one bit will steal it and tell the entire world it's theirs XD |
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks?
I have my signature, usually somewhere near the bottom. I'm not too worried about it being erased because one can rarely read it anyways. You can tell something is mine by a little insignia I created when I actually got hit with some art theft. D< It's a little fish, and it's usually placed somewhere where only I could pinpoint it. xP -Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? Not really, just my little insignia that I mentioned, it doesn't obstruct the art in my opinion... it's just like a second signature if you will. -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? Well if I'm drawing my own characters, then I'll usually have something like Character (c) M.Johnny or something like that. I don't particularly say don't steal. >.>;; -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hardwork and talents? I wouldn't say I was particularly paranoid... I'm not really well known... and well these days I tend to just do lazy sketches anyway. |
I see a lot of people saying they don't care wether their art gets stolen or not, and they don't watermark or just put a simple signature at the border. But if you really put a lot of effort into a piece of art, it's yours and inside it feels like it's yours too. When people steal it and say it's theirs, that can really hurt. They didn't put any effort into it, and people start giving them compliments and everything. I think it's disgusting!
Personally, I wouldn't see why you'd do that, because all the nice comments and replies, all the compliments, they wouldn't be towards YOU but towards the original artist. Unless it's for making profit (even more despicable) it doesn't have any use. I always put a little signature in my artworks, but if it's a really big piece, one I put a load of effort and time into, I watermark them. But the letters are see-through, and I try as hard as I can to not let them distract from the picture. And I am always prepared to give the non-watermarked version (that I always save too) to my friends! Some people here say that it's just drawing attention, blowing up your ego, so to say. But when stangers can look at your picture, just screen-capping it any moment, I wouldn't see why you WOULDN'T do that. I agree that you should trust your online friends, but there's not just friends out there. (That sounds like something from a C-movie.) I agree on the "STEAL AND DIE HAHAHAHAHA" thing though, that's useless! You can say "this and that character © 2007 me", because that's just common sense, when you say that, you can more or less prove that the picture/character's yours, but shouting that you'll kill 'em if they steal your pictures? How do you plan on doing that, even? :3 |
Yeah, I noticed that the people with a more beginner's skill level tend to be the ones who're most paranoid about their art and theft.
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks? Just a signature. If you're not looking carefully, it looks almost like a squiggle. Heck, I tossed out 40+ sketches at AX this year without writing my web address on a single one. Oops. @[email protected] -Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? Only when I'm intentionally trying to be a jerk to my school admin. Otherwise no. I really don't care. -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? Nope! I just tell people to use their own friggin' webspace. D< Bandwidth leechers annoy me far more. -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hardwork and talents? Not much. Most of the stuff I do is other people's OCs and avs, and I rarely show my own OCs online. I care way more about my own stuff than work I did for someone else. That and other people I know tend to get more riled up over stuff like that than I ever would so it's easier for them to be angry for me. XD -How do you interpret someone who draws their character in a pose EXACTLY like yours with the same expression, mannerisms, etc? Is that plagiarism? Well. The thing is, master copies are a common method of study for learning how to draw better. While someone doing this would earn a lot of laughter and a lolfail side by side comparison image from me, it's not that big of a deal in the end. Basically, if I can do it once, I can do it again and better each time. And again, a huge part of it is the complete emotional detachment I have from work that's not completely my own - it simply has no worth other than practice to me. I guess it's just embarrassing to see when the artist in question is better than the person they're copying - that's when I start wondering what they're thinking. |

I thought, "Doesn't she realize that completely ruins the picture? And if she's so worried about it being stolen, why post it in the first place?" u_u;; I don't watermark my things. I tried to, for a bit, but I could never find a way to make a signature that looked like it belonged in the image. And my drawings are usually very small and doodly anyways. No point in worrying. *shrug* :D |
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks?
Haha, no way, I draw in too many different styles too infrequently and not very well for someone to want to steal my work...poor sap, there are better art pieces to steal than my work. -Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? Nope, in fact I think I would feel honored if someone stole my work xD That is until they get more praise then I did.....then it's going down ^ 3^ -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? None at all, I just hope that anybody who sees it has enough common sense to not steal it. Stealers are almost always caught. -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hard work and talents? Not very paranoid actually. Though my friend had some of her work stolen, I was kind of confused as to why...but the thought never crossed my mind to worry about my own art. -How do you interpret someone who draws their character in a pose EXACTLY like yours with the same expression, mannerisms, etc? Is that plagiarism? Same-ness in pose is fine....let's call it referencing. But keeping it almost exactly the same as the original is plagiarism....in my opinion. |
I usually put 'the magical pixie-horse' cleverly in the lineart, so at first glance you don't realize it's there. And then if somebody takes it I'll be like 'OMG WHY DOES IT SAY MY NAME IN "YOUR" ARTS?"
Yeah. I'm not clever, but who cares. 8D I don't leave a disclaimer. I usually just wait and see who's dumb enough to take my art, really. Not that anyone would, because it's so... UNIQUE. (Therapist word for idiotic/stupid/bad.) I don't watermark. It looks bad. D8 I'm not as paranoid as I used to be about people stealing. Which is impressive, because my art was usually just a bunch of doodles/scribbles. Using the same pose/style as me is fine, I even consider it flattering that someone would like my art enough to try to improve theirs using it. It's just when the WHOLE thing looks oddly similar that I start to get flustered. |
I never had my pictures stolen.
But just talking from my thoughts, I think watermark works better than signature, if it's to protect the ownership of the picture. If the watermark is placed somewhere in the center, although it kind of makes the artwork ugly little bit, it's irremovable. I put watermark or a BIG signature somewhere in my corner. I use more of the signature/date, however. I didn't have my art stolen yet.. but if someone does, I'll have to put watermark in every picture. |
I think I'd be flattered that someone would want to steal my work. Honestly.
"Says someone who's never had their art stolen." x: |
I have my dA link plastered somewhere on everything I post online. To be honest, anyone with any abilites could still remove it.. and this has been the case :/
As long as I get a credit somewhere I'm usually ok with things being used for icons/layouts/shoes :P It's when people take things and make money off it that I get angry and start waving the beating stick around XD |
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks? Hmm, sometimes. My art doesn't seem to be the type to be stolen though- i draw noses too big. xD Anyways, yeah. I do leave my signature on my picture, sometimes huge, sometimes small, sometimes none at all. It depends on how I'm feeling about my artwork. -Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? Sometimes I watermark my work, but rarely. I probably wouldn't get anyone stealing my art in the first place. >__>;; -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? No, I don't leave little disclaimers. It seems like an excessively stupid thing to do. =___=; " OH MAH GAWDS, plox don't steal mah art i left so much effort on it! I once did, and got a bunch of negative feedback. xD -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hardwork and talents? I'm not paranoid at all. In fact, I don't care. -How do you interpret someone who draws their character in a pose EXACTLY like yours with the same expression, mannerisms, etc? Is that plagiarism? No, because they made it. Duh. |
I've actually had my work stolen or people claiming to be the person who did it when it still has my signature xD
My doll shop on gaia has gotten hit with theif alot, i love browsing in their stores saying 'OMG NO STEALZ THESE TOOK 4EVA TO [email protected]!!!~11!!' and stuff, cracks me up i only get uptight about it when someone is going to make a real profit from my work, like one user on here who stole off my work, kawaiihannah's bases and the offical graphics on here (even a mobile phone image xD) and used them on her 'dolls' i swear i was ready to choke her when i heard she was being nominated to be a developer here, i got so pissed off i was bitching about it to customers at work xDDDD i scared her off the site tho =3 so i feel good, i'd love to see her read this xD |
I do put a signature in my artwork, even though I know it sucks. It’s more out of habit now than anything because in high school my art teacher always had us put our signatures somewhere in the artwork. I don’t watermark my work because I don’t find it good enough to actually steal.
I do however with my writing have disclaimers. I’m more worried about someone taking my writing, which is why I never publish a full finished work anywhere on the web. I would consider it plagiarism if someone copied my work. I know a certain artist who makes quite a bit of money off doing that and it annoys me to no end. |
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks? NOPE.
-Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? NOPE. -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? NOPE. OH NO! I think i should do those things from now on. Thanx to make me notice! 6o6; -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hardwork and talents? Hmmm... if they want to use it then should tell me... -How do you interpret someone who draws their character in a poseEXACTLY like yours with the same expression, mannerisms, etc? Is that plagiarism? Depend on the agree of similarity. But i do not bothered by this stuff because I believe "Everyone can copy my picture but NOT my creativity" :D |
|
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks? I sign it at the bottom corner @@; Don't really have some sort of watermark. -Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? No, since I figured that no one would steal my art anyways o.O -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? No.. I figured that was obvious. -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hardwork and talents? Sorta, but it's rare though considering that I'm just an amateur artist. Maybe when I get better I'll start worrying about it ^^; -How do you interpret someone who draws their character in a pose EXACTLY like yours with the same expression, mannerisms, etc? Is that plagiarism? Yes that is. That is called eyeballing and is a form of art theft. |
i never really say anything about stealing
my art is pretty unknown and i dont worry about it |
A few years back if I ever drew anything, even a scribble... it was just instinct to make a little squiggly signature near it, on the paper. So of course when I scanned the images in to post up on the internet, the signature was there. But when I started doing my work purely digital (IE no scanning) I stopped adding signatures... Once in a great while I'll add "mangacatgirl" to a corner of the image, depending on the place I'm uploading it to... But for the most part my art doesn't get signed at all. Even when I did stick my name on the pieces, people just cropped it out or what not to steal it. It didn't really do me any good ^.^; So I guess I just stopped caring.
I even caught someone who stole my art on this very site once. I had drawn my avatar and stuck it in my signature. The girl ran it through MS paint or whatever and coloured over it, removed my name and added her own... Then stuck in in her signature... She took it out when I noticed it and PM'd her, asking her to remove it though. |
Almost all my art has a butterfly in it someplace with my initials blotted in the wings. Sometimes it's noticeable but most of the times you can't see it unless you zoom in. That way if anybody ever tried to steal my work they'd never notice the trade mark on it - and I can point it out right away xD.
If I don't do that I tend to incorporate TCN somewhere into the pic thats not really noticeable unless pointed out. Basically, I blend my initials into the art in a way that it's impossible to take out without ruining xD. |
My art is crap! I don't care who uses it, it'll be crap. I sometimes mark it but it always changes, I used to mark it in kanji, I've put my userneme on it and sometimes instead of my name I put who its for. It doesn't bother me. I know I did it, the people I draw for know I did it, that's all that matters to me.

My work usually involves dark images, so I sign the picture with a dark signature also so that it won't be too noticeable. The key there is that, if someone was trying to steal it, they probably wouldn't see the signature and it's be much easier to prove that it is my art.
I can't bring myself to watermark my images since I find them unsightly. D: I don't leave disclaimers about not stealing my work because when I post, I don't really think about that. It should universal knowledge that taking other peoples work (especially art) and claiming it as your own is immensely idiotic. I'm pretty relaxed about people taking my art. I was more sensitive about it when I started out, but now I have a few different views. If the thief wants to be a total loser and try to claim my work as theirs, I won't necessarily look the other way, but I wouldn't care too much (as long as they weren't making RL monetary profits from it). Actually, there was an incident where someone took an edit I had made and (c) my part as their own after editing the original base and said nothing at all about where they got the pieces that were my work. I was a little miffed. If someone took my pose/expressions I wouldn't mind too much. But if they gave their character the same mannerisms and such, I would have something to say about that. I work very hard to make my characters have unique mannerisms, and if someone just took mine without putting any effort in at all, I would be angry. ^^;; |
there's no getting around this situation. it's gonna happen
the best you can do is watermark it and when it does happen, contact the offender and ask them to remove it or give you credit |
-Do you leave some sort of marking, link, or unique signature on your artworks?
Usually yes I do. Most times it's my initials and the date, or just a my signature mark on the picture. I may have to start drawing it somewhere in the middle of the picture. Not sure if i will though. -Do you watermark your works? Excessively even? No, but perhaps I should. I don't want people stealing my art or using it for their own stuff. -Do you leave little disclaimers not to steal your works? Not usually. But I probably should. Hey, I can be paranoid if I want to be. -Just how paranoid are you about others taking credit for your hardwork and talents? Not as much as I should be. I'm not very careful about where I post my art. I have like three different sites that I post stuff up, and that's probably not very smart. Especially on Gaia. -How do you interpret someone who draws their character in a pose EXACTLY like yours with the same expression, mannerisms, etc? Is that plagiarism? In my thinking, yes it is. Now if they just choose to copy the pose, I don't really mind, as long as they credit the pose to me. But I normally stick away from poses, because I'm not very good at them yet. |
