Long Boring Airplane Trips

Most people have been on an airplane trip that takes forever. You have to sit in the same spot for hours. You didn't get a window seat. You have to sit next to your annoying sibling the whole time. You have absolutely nothing to do.

What do you like to do on long plane rides?

Personally I bring my MP3 player, some magazines and books, maybe a deck of cards or some other small game. If the airplane has individual TV's on the seats, I watch TV. If not, I watch whatever movie is playing, even if it's crappy. I also try to get a window seat so I can see out the window. Thankfully I don't have siblings, so I probably sleep for a bit too.

AIRPORT SECURITY. WTF.

What are some things you can do to make the trip more interesting?
[Things that won't get you in serious trouble though.]

What are some memorable plane rides?
[longest, worst, nicest etc.]

I don't mind aeroplanes, so I can't think of a worst experience. My best experience was flying 11 hours from Heathrow to San Fransisco, there and back... first class.

Believe me, the luxury was indescribable. All I'll say is that the bed, bar, and massage were very enjoyable.

edit;
On normal trips, I take an iPod, books, and magnetic games.

Easther_Bunni 07-15-2007 09:40 PM

Wow lucky! I'd love to fly first class!

I have to go on a trip to Holland, and I live in BC Canada, so it's going to be at least 9 hours, probably 11 or 12. I really hope I don't forget my MP3 at home, like last time I went on the plane.

Steve the Garden Hose 07-15-2007 09:41 PM

Lol, aeroplanes.
That reminds me of aero bars.

I went on a plane when I was about 3 or 5.
I can't really remember it well, but I do know that I slept through it.
And we weren't allowed to look out the window.

Easther_Bunni 07-15-2007 09:46 PM

You weren't allowed to look out the window?

Why??

  • Long airplane trips make me ill. @[email protected] I get airsick...not like vomiting...but more like a deep, gut-wrenching nauseous feeling that does not fade until I have been on land for awhile.

The longest trips I have been on in my life were:
    1. Germany to North Carolina USA
    2. Houston, Texas USA to Honolulu, HI USA
    3. California USA to Hawaii USA to Seoul, South Korea

I have done all of those trips before they had the individual TVs. (They just had a projector play a movie.) Before cell phones. Before I owned my own mp3 player. I didn't even have a CD player. D:

    My only solutions were:
    1. Sleep. I make sure the night before the trip, I get NONE at all. That way I'm out cold for a long part of the trip. It's uncomfortable and sometimes I get cold, but at least I didn't die of boredom. XD
    2. Play card games. Solitaire, War, and Go Fish got boring after awhile though.
    3. Read. This made me more ill though, so I tend to not do it anymore. XD
    4. Draw. I can sit in one place and occupy myself with a drawing for quite some time...Quite effective.

H_e_a_r_t 07-15-2007 09:49 PM

  • Ah...i usually eat and watch movies or something ^^ Mostly eat  and read, yeah! I dont get bored that often anyway  i like to entertain myself

Bippy 07-15-2007 10:04 PM

What do you do during long airplane trips?
Normally I bring my MP3 player and Nintendo DS and attempt to drown out the sound of children crying and the never ending grind of airplane engines. I'll also normally pick up a few magazines at one of those airport Kiosks so I have something to read.

What are some thoings you can do to make the trip more interesting?
[Things that won't get you in serious trouble though]

Um...if I'm traveling with people I know we'll play "I Spy" or funny word games. Or if I'm on wicked long flights I'll get up and take walks up and down the isles (Which medical journals say is a good thing so you don't get blood clots) though that does tend to annoy the stewardesses...

What's the worst plane ride you've ever had?
Ugh, red eye flight...we got onto the plane to find someone else sitting in our seats because the airline had double booked so we ended up STANDING in the kitchen section of the plane as we taxied onto the runway before three empty seats could be found. I got seperated from my parents and ended up sitting in the last row next to a couple of drunken middle aged men. -___- oh and we missed our connecting flight. Thankfully that airline is no longer in service.

What's the longest plane ride you've ever had?
Hmm...I think the longest flight I've ever been on was the flight I took from Seattle to Tokyo...ten hours of boredom. Why is it on such long flights they always play such crappy movies? Though when the AC on the plane shut down they did give us free ice cream and popsicles

Orihime 07-15-2007 10:16 PM

I've never been on an airplane before.. I'm too scared to get one

I'm always afraid when ever I get on a plane it's going to crash.. or it's going to get hi-jacked.

I've always been like this.. and not because of the terrorist attack..

I'm just a chicken when it comes to flying, a ship is less scary..

NoirAngel 07-15-2007 10:20 PM

I know what you mean, I was just on a flight yesterday and first was delayed about 3 hours, then my flight was changed to a different terminal and last but centanly not least, the plan was late getting off the runway.

Good news is that US Airways was able to spare a sprite just for me...wow, thanks US Airways. Really for anyone today flying is just another pain in the butt!!!

El DJ 07-15-2007 10:54 PM

I listen to my MP3 player and watch movies.

And look outside when it's dark, then i can see all the city lights and everything.

Azureile 07-15-2007 10:58 PM

I've never been on a REALLY long plane ride, although I'm always bored on airplanes.

xD

i always bring my mp3 player, but I hate it when it's so noisy you can't even hear the music. >__>; it doesn't help that my parents are really close to me too ((since the seats are so close)), and I don't want them to hear. xD

I bring my laptop, too. and store music on there for when the mp3 player runs out of battery. ;w; Or...I charge my iPod using my laptop's battery. xD -so creative-

xD

I usually bring a book or a magazine, but those don't really hold my attention for long. xD

When I was little, I'd bring my gameboy and be entertained for hours. xD But I feel too old to still be playing with it... >___>;

i like looking through those SkyMall magazines. :D The ones with all the cool technology stuff. @[email protected]

I'm unfortunate in the fact that i cannot fall asleep in public. xD it's happened before only ONCE, and that was when we were on a bus ride home from Disneyland at two o clock in the morning. xD

i hate it when there's a toddler on the plane really close to me. At least, i hate it when they start screaming. >___>;

i also don't like it when people kick my seat, or rock back and forth which spills my water. xDDD

Aurora 07-15-2007 11:53 PM

OMGosh, airplane rides are fun!!! Not the small ones, but those big airplanes at the airport! =D Last time we went in an airplane was when we went to Yellowstone, it was awesome! Me and my sister took turns sitting by the window and they would bring out snacks sometimes. You could watch a movie to but I think we slept some but alot of the time looked out and took some pictures of the clouds. XD And brought things to do like draw or read. :3
The Chicago airport is COOL! Well, I like the huge windows. That airport is huge!

Queen Fool 07-16-2007 12:10 AM

Anything that's moving, I can't read on. I bring my iPod, but it bores me rather quickly. I bring a book, but I get headaches pretty soon. I'm left to watch the flight movie and listen to the person next to me snore.

I hate large planes with a passion. If I go on a large plane, I'll be deaf for the rest of the day, and I won't hear normally for a few days. Small ones aren't as bad.

Anyone ever sit next to someone who should have purchased 2 seats for themselves? It's rather uncomfortable.

Razor 07-16-2007 12:50 AM

Longest plane ride I've ever been on was only 2h 30mi. XD Never been far.

Although that time still killed me, I tried to fall asleep and I just couldn't. I basically just listened to music the whole time.

Harkem 07-16-2007 12:54 AM

lol..longest plane ride i ever had was when i went to New York from singapore...it was like 3 flights.. i didn't mind the flights itself persay..but the transit >_> is even more horrible. By luck. all our transits occur in the middle of the night where they aren't anything to see at the airports >_<;;...the longest will probably be from New York Via anchorage to Taipei ._. i slept most of the time XD

Michailia 07-16-2007 12:59 AM

I was on a plane that went from Ottawa to Vancouver.
I brought a Gameboy, but...there was no movie.
At all.
And it only had two rows, so it got crowded pretty quickly.
No children though, so bonus.

Easther_Bunni 07-16-2007 03:22 AM

Yeah, I've been on planes a lot.

All my family lives either on the East Coast or Europe, so either way it's pretty long.

Transfers can be fun, the Calgary Airport has a giant playground, a shopping mall and an astronomy center thing. Ususally transfers can be boring though.

shaggysmule 07-16-2007 08:40 AM

I love airplane trips.. they also give out great food lol. :o

Sun 07-16-2007 08:57 AM

I've never had the joy of an airplane trip, so not much to share here.

elissis 07-16-2007 02:02 PM

What do you do during long airplane trips?
it depends on what air line i'm flying on.
most of those i've flown on have movies to watch.. so i just keep watching and watching (don't get bored because usually i don't get to watch any movies in the cinema in my free time)

if not, i try to sleep X'3 (i take medicine for air-sickness which causes drowsiness.. though i usually manage to fight it and stay awake to watch the inflight movies)

i don't take out my mp3.. usually just listen to what they have on the flight X'3

AIRPORT SECURITY.
with luck.. they're not too bad i guess..

What are some memorable plane rides?
longest plane ride.. was one that i had to do with a transit.
6.5 hours + 4 hours transit waiting time + 13 hours on the next plane.
IT WAS A LONG JOURNEY!! but totally worth it.
thankfully i didn't get airsick till nearing the end of it..
but i didn't puke.. so it wasn't too bad *phew*

it's one of the most memorable coz i did get a whole 3 seats to myself.. that allowed me to lie down and curl up to try to sleep
(think this happened on the way home from the trip)

aphrodite remix 07-16-2007 04:06 PM

My flight home from Germany was 13 hours.. I had brought my lap top so I played games on that until it died, I had my Ipod so I ended up listening to a ton of music, and I drew/played my DS the rest of the time. Reading was not an option mostly becaues I started getting sick.

Lucky for me though there were so few passengers that people could basically sit where they wanted and i had 3 seats to myself to stretch out on, and we could walk around. Flying Air Canada is a sweet deal for sure.

Now on the flight from Winnipeg to Toronto which is only 2 hours.. that was lame I sat between two old men, we were talking about cheese and wine tasting, and they smelt horrible, and it was cramped so I just listend to music and wanted it to be over.

I'd rather share a plane ride with one of my siblings, but that's because they're hella cool and awesome to talk to or hang out with.

3 seats? I usually fly US air and that never happens.

I hate being stuck between strange people. I'm always next to old people. Once I was by the aisle, and the guy by the window decided he had to go to the bathroom when the plane was just about to take off. He was a nice guy, but that really annoyed me.

vernors 07-16-2007 05:27 PM

I usually sleep on general flights. <3

But when I go/come back from France I watch movies and play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire over and over again(plus sleep lol). XD

zaner 07-16-2007 05:33 PM

  • I bring a Gameboy my Ipod and s bunch of games and i usually buy myself a new game to keep me occupied for the airplane time. Im going on a trip tomarrow(headed to Minnasoda to see some family i have never met)

Oh and i have been on an 11 hour plane trip from USA to England That really sucked. beyond all reason. But i know its not my last 11 hour or longer flight i want to go to japan, Ireland, and Austrilla about the same amount of time.
