Memoirs of a Geisha

Well i just got done reading the book today and let me say i loved it even more so than the movie..which i loved as well....the thing about the book is it really dives into the history of what life was like for a geisha..and in so much detail..it was a great life/love story..

Give me your thoughts on the book and whether or not you liked it better than the movies interpretation...

Masquerade 07-19-2007 06:03 AM

From what I understand about the book, the history in it is completely inaccurate. The woman whose life it was based on went on to write her story all over again from her own point of view. They're two completely different books.

With that said, I enjoyed the movie but haven't read either book all the way through just yet.

Havent read it, on advice from my mother.

She read it and told me she though the story was dull, so I though I would think the same. *nods*

I loved the book and the movie. I'm not sure which one I liked more... maybe the movie. It made the story a little more exciting.

Then again, maybe it's because I'm just a visual person. But I did adore the book. :)

actually the book wasnt based on anyone..the main character was fictional..but she did use a famous geisha as a source of information about the lifestyle..and about more the dressing and the day to day life of a geisha..the main character was the authors invention and she even states that in the acknowledgements...

Oh, I thought this book was absolutely amazing for the author that wrote it. You can tell he did a ton of research, and really put all his effort into writing it. I quite enjoyed the book, and I reread it often (not like Harry Potter or Twilight often, but often).

As for the movie, I was shocked. I hadn't seen an adaption like that in such a long time. A book that can be so very well adapted to the screen like that is a masterpiece!

Masquerade: Its actually not based on anyone's life. Its a complete work of fiction. Its basically talking about the lives of a Geisha (overall). We do not have any proof that this was meant to be semi-biographic at all.

Eimi: The author is a male, just so you know DX But he did interview a few Geisha to understand the lives that they led, the things that they had to do.

whoops ya i miss spoke myself...but it was nice that he did do interviews with some pretty famous geisha in the past to get some actual facts in it...thats the part i enjoyed the most cause i think there are a lot of misconceptions about geisha..i really didnt know much about them till i started reading this and did my own research

That book was possibly one of the most moving pieces I have ever read. It was wonderfully and beautifully written, and for me it was something that you could almost see and feel, more than just read. I loved how the storyline was not dragged out, and did not seem to be to dramatic or over done.

I was however, dissapointed by the movie. I did feel that they could have done better with the material they had. The acting was great, the casting was great but for me it was missing something that was in the books.

sayuri_nitta 07-23-2007 06:39 PM

The thing that has to be remembered is that Memoirs of a Geisha is a novel, it is beautifully written, and is my favourite, but it will never be a faithful narrative because it was not written by a Geisha.

Arthur Golden did in fact interview Mineko Iwasaki, a retired geisha who has since published her own autobiography, in which she told her own story of her life, including the fact that she herself did not go through mizuage.
But, this does not mean that mizuage did not happen, if you read Liza Dalby's book Geisha, you will see that she spoke to many Geisha, some of who actually went through mizuage themselves. Liza Dalby was also a consultant on the movie.

The movie was visually stunning but I feel that it wasnt faithful enough to the book.

I really can't add much to this discussion other than the simple fact that this was a phenomenal novel, and I am impressed with the research that Arthur Goldin did for it; his imagery and stoy-telling ability truly brought the book to life for me. I am looking forward to reading the autobiography, thanks for letting me know about it, I hadn't.

As for the movie--visually stunning, and emotionally evocative. Yet, it lacked something that the book had, but I cna't quite put my finger on it. I think one of my biggest issues with it is that the movie focused more on the love story than on the geisha world and life. Don't get my wrong, I do love me a good love story though!

I watched the movie and I loved it! I got the book in english (my main language is swedish) from my mom and Iīm planning on reading that as soon as I have read all the other books I want to read! ^___^

  • Books and movies are two entirely separate beasts... No matter how good a movie is, if it is based off of a good book, the book will always be better to me. I just love to read! But when you're in a movie mood no book will stand up to it.

Memoirs of a Geisha was a fantastic book and beautiful in the movie adaption, but you get so much more depth from the book. I like to reread the book before I rewatch the movie, the story of the movie becomes fuller. :3

The movie was amazing but the book blew me away. It's one of the best books I have ever read and I often try to get others to read it.

I love the movie and the book!
The book was better and that suprised me because I usually like movies more than books

Eimi 07-30-2007 02:10 AM

Ok..i first saw the movie..and then read the book...and now that i read the book i decided to rewatch the movie which i recently did..and now that both are so fresh in my mind..i definitely can say that I loved the book compared to the movie..and I did not realize how much i didnt like about the movie until i rewatched it. There were a few things i was disappointed in such as the character display in the movies of nobu and the chairman..for one thing she had a more deep relationship with nobu than the chairman and the movie seemed to depict the opposite..so that was disappointing..but overall..i still love the movie..but i can now definitely say the book is better

Seiki Nova 07-30-2007 06:12 AM

Reading the book made the movie such a better experience fore me. I read the book first, as I do with many adaptations. I like to know the fully story before I watch the films.

Bruxinha_sorridente 07-31-2007 07:11 PM

I read the book when it first came out and I loved it. All the story!
My favorite quote is from that book (sorry, it's translated so there's no way I can put it here). I love all the story and yes, it's fiction... those gueishas didnīt really existed.

I liked the movie but I would have picked some other actors... (the male ones).

Chuchila 08-01-2007 04:20 AM

I was one of the people that saw the movie first and then read the book because I didn't know it was a book in the first place; however, I'd have to say that I love the book as much as I do the movie. As for whether either of them is better than the other to me? The book gives lots of details that painted pictures for me somewhat better than the actual visual movie did but at the same time I liked the movie because it gave me a reality to see in stead of using my own imagination from the start. Both gave way to imagination either way..

Seiki Nova 08-01-2007 06:30 AM

I think that I'm going to watch this movie tomorrow xD I've just been mesmerized by reading the novel again, and I always watch the movie after reading the novel.

I still think that the novel is better though <3

Cow 08-06-2007 09:44 PM

I have the book, but I stopped reading it suddenly for some reason.
I should find it and begin it again.

Zweres 08-07-2007 01:48 AM

  • I only found out about the book because in Sizzla's trivia - that was one of the questions and I thought Sandra Oh (or something close) was a actor. However - my mom has read it and didn't really like it because she saw the movie first. That basically ruined it for her.

Skrae 08-07-2007 04:27 PM

I have yet to see the movie, but I did love the book.
Perhaps it wasn't entirely accurate, but on the whole, I believe that the author did a very good job of portraying the mysterious world of the Geisha.
It's inspired me to do some off-hand researching in the library on my own.

Sadistix_Love 08-07-2007 05:56 PM

I haven't read the book yet. When I first got the movie, I was so eager to watch it but then afterwards I found out it was not my cup of tea. ^^;

Hoshi 08-13-2007 05:39 AM
