Smells like .....
Have you ever had this time, that you smelled something, and you get this
very bad feeling, because the scent reminds you of a time in your life that you were very unhappy? Or maybe a scent that reminds you of a time that you were very happy? I was looking though some stuff today, and found a box with perfume bottles, and in every bottle there was a few drops left of the scent, so I could smell them if I wanted to. Now when I smelled at the last bottom, I got very nauseous all of a sudden. I think I got this perfume (Puma, Flowing) for christmas from my mom. Nothing wrong with that, but I also wore it at the time that my mom got very sick, died, and the hard times after that. So whenever I smell it, I feel weird. It smells like dead. Discuss: Favorite perfumes. Least favorite perfumes. Scents that reminds you of happy/unhappy times. |
I went to a funeral several years ago for a little boy with my friend. She was wearing some sweet smelling scent that to this day, makes me see his face. Death and the dead don't bother me visually, but a lot of emotion was in the room that day, so as you can imagine...
The scent of my fiance's cologne also gives me mixed emotions, but that's a long story. I must say, scent is the most important scent for me. So many memories get attached for me. |
I went on a day trip to London a few years ago with some work mates. While we were there i tried some of JLo's Glow on and rather liked it.
But my Nan was in hospital at the time recovering from surgeryafter being diagnosed with cancer, and towards the end of the day my Mum texted me telling me to ring her as soon as i got home, regardless of how late it was because she had some bad news about Nan. The hospital had called her and given her the'get the relatives together for the final goodbye' speech as they didn't except her to last much longer. miraculously she did survive, but the smell of that scent turns my stomach now, because it was all i could smell while i was sat there on that long bus journey imagining that my Nan was about to die  But some frangrances have happy associations for me, i found an old bottle of roll on deodorant in a toilet bag, which i had used when i'd gone on holiday to Majorca several years previously, and the scent of that took me straight back there immediately. The smell of certain soaps remind me strongly of my Great Nan. Chi is right, scent is a powerful thing, a certain frangrance can stir up long forgotten memories, be them good or bad. |
My mum has Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden. I didn't mind it that much, until she wore it to my Grandad's funeral. Now whenever I smell it, I think of funerals D:
My favourite perfume is Curious by Britney Spears |
I thought Curious bu Brittney spears was going to smell like air freshner until my friend sprayed some on me.

It wasnt perfume but sometimes i randomly smell a scent.. i don't even know how to describe it. But it reminds me of when I was on my last trip to Spain in my family's house there and getting ready for a bath/being in the bathroom. Once i smelled it around my boyfriend briefly, and i think outside once at another time. It's very random but its not a bad memory at least. =)
Once my Dad was walking towards the door when we got home from work, a few years ago. And as we we got closer He kinda freaked out and went near me to sniff me and asked me if i was wearing perfume, i said no, and he said he smelled something very sweet and flowery.. he said it reminded him of the scent of an angel. Hehe cant think of any other occurences with scents atm... I dont really like perfumes anymore. essential oils are <3 |
Oh yeah, certain scents totally send me reeling down memory lane.
No examples from life are coming to mind right now. Certain objects send me back in time, but also certain qualities of light trigger really strong emotions in me. There is this one type of sunlight that really bothers me, when it's so intensely sunny that the sky is pale and everything looks washed out. That kind of light reminds me of asphalt and playgrounds and San Diego, but not in a positive way at all. It makes me feel really barren and abandoned. It totally sucks. Hmm, golden afternoon/evening light bothers me too, reminds me of unhappy Sunday afternoons at my dad's when I was little. I'm working on getting over that particular association though, because that kind of light is super common, almost daily, so it gets in the way of my life. Heh, yeah. Weird. |
When I was little, my family would all go to the mall together and my Mom would get all dressed up. She would wear this nice perfume. Everytime I smell it now, it reminds me of those times.
My basement also has this smell that makes me think of when I played Ocarina of Time for the first time...because thats where the N64 used to be. ^^; But thats not a perfume...hehe |
There is a certain way the forest smells after it rains, like it smells more like sap than fresh earth that reminds me of summer camp, not a lot of happy memories there. There is also some shower gel it's either old spice or nautica that whenever I smell it reminds me of my ex boyfriend, lots of mixed emotions there.

There are things that when I smell I miss.
I miss home. I had quite a few homes when I was growing up and I miss those people and times terribly. So whenever I catch a whiff, I tear up or smile, or just space out and get sorta depressed.. |
Well, one of my friends gets sick when she smells a certain place's barbeque... Her name's Haley, and she told me one time when I was at her house why she can't eat Dave's BBQ... One time, she was really, really sick, so as she was eating the barbeque, she ended up throwing up... The place's food has a distinctive smell, so whenever her family goes there, she gets sick because she's reminded of how it smelled like when she threw up, so she gets sick all over again... >_____0; I can't remember anything for me, but... |
My mom had Maroussia as perfume, whenever I smell the bottle that was hers
I feel like she's around me again :') And same as the hairspray she used... Some while ago a friend of my boyfriend wore the male version of Puma - Flowing, and he said: "Heey hows my new clonge!" I said: "=x great... puma I guess?" He said: "Yeaaah how do you guess!!?" For Menewshans who don't get it: read first post again. |
Well, I don't know o 3o.
I love citrus scents, and I hate rose scents. But yeah, not much after that, my emotions are pretty much more sensitive to taste than smell o 3o |
I have no doubt that scent is indeed an very strong scent, but i've had no real bad happenings that i associate with smells. certain types of smell, lik, the smell of musk and old damp clothes and dust all together make me think of cadets, and the happy times i had there.
The smell of the chalets where i go on holiday every year brings back happy memories for me too. A perfume my mom wears reminds me of her when i smell it too, as do deoderants or other perfumes, when i smell them i think of the person i fist smelt it on. |
