One of the biggest symbols in America is Lady Liberty. But did you know she was a gift from the French?
Did you know that only 57% of Americans can recite the national anthem while 97% can sing you the "Big Mac" song?

I know this is a very broad statement to make, but from what the world sees, this IS America.

As for how America sees the world:
It is a great idea to take over another country when, if GW Bush was in Hussain's place with the death threats from rebel millitia, I'm sure...no, POSITIVE he would have had them killed too.

I mean, honestly, I can understand if you were an American who hated these FACTS about America, and then being offened by the comments bad against themselves instead of their country. But think about it. Seriously think about it for a minute. Would you rather whip up a healthy salad than gobble down a Big Mac? Would you opt for having a dog as hone secruity, or a gun?

My post speaks for itself of my opinions.

I hate McDonald's. And I am American. In fact, I just hate fast food.

Fastfood joints
Like I said, I hate fast food., But they have fast food in other countries, believe it or not.

Lawsuits for the most stupid of things
Um, what? No one I've known has EVER sewed another person.

A decreasing number of graduates
You don't like America because we have less and less people dropping out of school? |: Why?

A poor schooling system
How is that our fault?

"american pride"
You find pride everywhere else in the world.
I have Scottish friends and family, and they're so proud that they're Scottish that they don't even say they're from the UK, they just say that they're from Scotland.

Power through fear
Do all of us do this? No. Some of the politicians do, but that doesn't mean all of us get power through that. And even if some politicians do that, why do you dislike the whole mass of America for that? If you think that we all act like the politicians, you are truly ignorant.

The shady behind-the-scenes of the government system
How is that the citizens' fault? |:

Huge racisim issues
America isn't the only place with racism, you know. It's ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Murder
There are murderers in EVERY country, and if you think otherwise, I'll personally slap you.

Belief in a system that has only ever cheated it's people
Who's to say we all like it?
I even stated that I don;t like like our politics, which also means our government. You use stereotypes much too much. Not only that, it happens in other countries, as well.

Corruption to the max
Oh yes, because every other country is pure and wonderful, and has never done anything wrong. I'm sorry, I forgot we're corrupted and evil.

The top 3% of America's most wealthy have almost all of the country in their back pockets
Wow, genius, do you know what a stereotype is?

The avaliblity of firearms
You have to have a license to get firearms. |: It's not like they just hand them to every Jane and Joe.

The media
There's media in other countries.

The EVERYWHERE-EVERYTHING advertising
We have a lot European advertisements here, you know. We also have Asian ones. And guess what? They're "EVERYWHERE-EVERYTHING".

And many many MANY more.
That I could shoot down as false.

I can recite the National Anthem, and didn't even know that the Big-Mac has a song. And yes, I knew that it was a gift from France. I've known that since kindergarten, when we had to learn basic US facts, along with our National Anthem. If you would, please, tell me where you got your statistics because they're a load of bull shit.

I am against the war in Iraq, thank you. |:

And my favorite food is spinach salad. I'm a vegetarian because I like the healthy lifestyle. And don't act like you have unhealthy people in your country, because I know you do, wherever you live. There are unhealthy people everywhere, but do I hate them for it? No.

Congrats, you've made an ass out of yourself, because none of that was "fact" as you stated.

Muggles Running Amok 08-11-2007 10:26 PM

She stated generalizations that are somewhat true. If they weren't true at least a bit, they wouldn't be relevant at all.

She never said, "THESE APPLY TO EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN." She didn't make an ass out of herself by stating generalizations with at least a little truth in them.

Other countries have less fast food & preservatives.
Frivolous lawsuits do happen, moreso in the US.
Less graduates means less education for more people in the US. Education is vital.
Schooling systems are a result of the government, she never said it was our fault.
There's nothing wrong with American pride, however.
She doesn't dislike the whole of America. She dislikes what it stands for.
AGAIN, wrongdoings of the government is not our fault, nor did she say it was.
Statistics say that America is one of the countries with the MOST murders. I have it bookmarked somewhere, but I'm lazy.
The point is not that she was bashing all Americans. She was bashing some of what happens in America. She wasn't insulting you personally and saying that you support everything on her list.
Firearms are extremely easy to get. I took health in July for extra credit, and one of the subjects covered was gang violence, and it happens partly because teens have access to firearms. The majority of all gang related violence is caused by firearms.
Media here is absolutely disgraceful. I haven't been exposed to that much media in other countries, so I guess I can't say that theirs is better, but ours is horrible. Same goes with advertising.

Opiate did not make an ass out of herself. You misinterpreted her post, and I didn't like it that you resorted to name calling because you thought that what she said was aimed toward every single American.

H_e_a_r_t 08-11-2007 10:28 PM

Opiate: Hehe, America's education system is lovely though. Even though most European countries criticize it... You know, in America, even if you screwed up 12 years of your life xD You can still stand up and go to college and get your life together C= IN other countries...not so much.
I don't know why fewer graduates would come in this matter of like and hate though o.O You hate dumber people?
Corruption? You think this is corruption? xDDD You have seen nothing yet hon.
Europe is more racist than America --nod--
Advertising? o.O;;; dont watch it?
Firearm is available so that the people can defend themselves if government goes berserk.

Kris 08-11-2007 10:31 PM

But they're just that: generalizations.

I don't know any Americans who make generalizations about other countries unless they're joking. And yet, I've seen America generalized so much that people have all together forgotten we're a country of individuals. The point of this topic is not to make people generalize us, tell us that they don't like us, tell us they don't like what we stand for, but to show them that most generalizations are stupid, and can easily be proven wrong.

With her post, she did make an ass of herself, because she COMPLETELY missed that point.

H_e_a_r_t 08-11-2007 10:33 PM

Oh well C= Let them hate us, xD No one likes each other anyway (country-wise) xDD

Muggles Running Amok 08-11-2007 10:34 PM

Just because you don't know anyone who makes serious generalizations does not mean it doesn't happen. As long as there is human nature, there will be discrimination and stereotypes and all of that. You can't stop it or control it. People assume. There's no stopping it.

That doesn't mean I can't try to open a few eyes.

Americans are just people, just like the rest of the world. And I want the people of Menewsha who posted in the other thread bashing America for absolutely no reason to realize this, and yes, even feel bad for what they said.

Muggles Running Amok 08-11-2007 10:44 PM

But there is some truth in a lot of generalizations about America.
Here, I found that article. http://cthings.crispynews.com/article/show/4764

That's a bit of an eye opener, too... No one's going to feel bad if there's some truth in what they're saying. I agree that stereotypes are bad, but if there's truth, then you can't really do anything about it.

[/url]

Kris 08-11-2007 11:29 PM

That isn't true for all Americans, though, and many of those percents are VERY low. Yet they say that because of 27% and 17% of Americans are stupid, that means that all of us are?

I'm no patriot, in fact, I hate living here, not because of the people, and I even plan on moving to the UK one day and getting my citizenship there. But I am sick and tired of people acting as though because I'm American, I'm stupid. Because I'm American, I'm fat, lazy, and know nothing about anything. Because I'm American, I'm automatically Christian and conservative, with no idea how anything works.

You can not say that because of 17% we're all stupid. You can not say that because of 27% of people in the US are stupid, all of us are stupid. You can't say that ____% of people are overweight and plan to do nothing about, all of us are that way. I could go find facts like that about any country, but they aren't ridiculed here on Mene mercilessly like Americans are.

You know what? You should read what I bold of this comment on that article:

"I dont get it, Ive used things like this in my classroom before, but at the end of the day im like so what. America is damn amazing. I love America; I can go eat amazing sushi and then go watch a play on the peace process in the middle east. I live across the street from mountains and Im about to take a 2 month vacation, to me this country is amazing. Im ok with not finding a number that allows me to say "America is number 1".

The statistics are not so clear.

We have no information with how these statistics are computed, I could come up with numbers or indexes that show that America is number 1.
If we look at Human development indicators, we are in the top 10, and of the countries a head of us none are as diverse ior have as high of a population. America is not a small European country that is homogenous. Our diversity increases the probability we will fall in some of these indicators. We arent a small European country remember this fact, and many statistics are comparing the US to europe. Also some of these statistics are bull-shit, so what if we lost so many jobs to china? How many greater jobs did we create? We dont want to produce plungers, we want to make computer chips and provide technology services. So what if people dont vote in America? MAybe we dont vote because our government is so stable it doesnt really matter. Maybe we dont have manditory voting, so our numbers arent as high. Maybe we have such great checks on our government we know that no one can screw up our country so bad for more then 8 years.

Also can I get a confidence interval around these statistics? Wow 1/4th of americans believe something, but had a standard error +/- 5. That means the confidence interval around the figure could be +/-10%! I find it absurd to throw around numbers and go oh wow our country is not great.

Anyways, Newspapers arent how I base the worth of America, I base it in the amazing people who are kind, the beauty that lives around me, and the freedom this country provides me.

Chris Markl"

And personally, I find it horrid that the person who wrote that looks down on people born out of wedlock. I was born out of wedlock. Am I now a bad person? :?

Krissy 08-11-2007 11:45 PM

It's kinda amusing when my friends talk about Americans. "Well, all Americans are stupid, except you!" And... really, we see the worst in all cultures. We assume that everyone is the same way, just because a majority of people are that way. Even us Americans do that with other cultures.

I can understand why there is so much hate, but... It's kinda sad that people are just knowing the rude, stupid, fat and lazy people and not the people who are smart, creative, lively and nice.

You know, I may be a little lazy, and air headed, but that doesn't not make me stupid or uncaring towards other cultures. It's sad that I'm added to that group, when really, no one gets to know the real me because they think I'm just like the majority.

Yeah, I really wish that could stop.

  • I dislike it when people generalize all Americans as if we were one person. d;

Moon 08-12-2007 03:11 AM

I've heard a couple of people hating Americans too.
Those people are just ignorants.
There are good people and bad people everywhere... Not only on one country.

There just jelious that they can't be smexy like is americans :'D

twizted child eve 08-12-2007 02:13 PM

Not all Americans are mean. Every country has mean people in it. That's a fact. Saying 'Americans are mean' or 'Americans are stupid' is wrong and generalizing a population. I live in America and I know there are stupid people and mean people in this world, but that doesn't mean a whole country is made of mean or stupid people.

  • I'm American - and America isn't the only one having a few problems. Not everything could be running smoothly. For example - China is having litter problems (read in magazine), where I saw a lake filled with so much litter you couldn't even see any water at all. With China's giant growth - they certainly are going to use up more coal and oil which send up more greenhouse gases. Now - I'm not picking on China - I'm only stating a few examples of what the country needs work with. Like America - China is a marvelous site. Not all people other dislike Americans - although I dislike it politically to be honest. I don't think everything can be perfect in anything - but if not - why does America attract so many tourists from things like the Golden Gate Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and other great attractions like Disneyland? I think America is great - as my parents made the right choice in moving to it.

I agree with Zweres. Every place has its problems. No place is perfect. It's not possible.
