Quote:

There is a cost to every action. In Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood and The Corporation by Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbot and Joel Baken present the contemporary society with cautionary tales to emphasize the cost of altering nature. These two different mediums use surprisingly similar evidences to prove how nature should not be disturbed, such as the effect from new harmful inventions, and the spreading of diseases among humans.

To begin with, in the novel Oryx and Crake, the companies change many life forms, revealing more useful yet in fact more dangerous inventions. These inventions include new species such as Snat, a mix of snake and rat; Wolvog, a mix of wolf and dog; Pigoon, a piglet that grows extra organs, and many more. All of these inventions revolving around the distortion of live beings have no purposeful use; other then added protection, extra production and another investment to gain profit. The most dangerous animal would be the Wolvog, and they are usually caged at the labs for they are known to be dangerous. The character Crake explains their purpose, “They are bred to deceive,”“[they are] better than an alarm system, and no way of making pals with them, not like real dogs.”(Crake, 250) However, once they are out of their cages, they heartlessly harm the human who created them. “It wouldn’t take [the Wolvogs] forever to figure out that [Snowman] no longer had a spray gun [and attack].”(Snowman, 45) Without a barrier, the Wolvog will only attack humans for that is their nature created by the companies. This evidence of the Wolvog provided in this novel shows the danger that humans bring to themselves, just because they feel in need to renovate yet another natural being, for added security and excessive profits.

Similarly, the alteration of life is also becoming more commercialized in the documentary The Corporation. For example, the Chakrabarty case ivolves around the alteration and patenting of genes. This case starts with just a living “microbe that eats up oil spills,” says Jeremy Rifkin, President of Foundation on Economic Trends (The Corporation), and the case continues with it becoming an officially patented invention. However after seven years, the U.S. Department of Commerce Patent and Trademark Office issues, “you can patent anything in the world that is alive, except a full birth human being.” This results in a massive flow of patenting of living organisms and creatures, including the genes that makeup the human being. Soon, lives will become commercial and just another product being invented, which include human beings. The Corporation again believes that every time humans try to invent and alter nature, it is bound to later endanger them.

Furthermore, in Oryx and Crake, the human's desire for products abnormal such as altering themselves, give industries the chance to gain profit and at the same time disregarding the defects of many of these inventions. For example, as Crake’s company take the advantage of “the human condition” and “the wish to stop time”(Crake, 352); they create their new product ‘BlyssPluss’. This invention fulfill the desires of human to have less concerns when having sex by; protecting the user from diseases, gaining of sexual powers, and it is also capable of lengthen youth. Theses pills attracts a large group of buyers, because humans are selfish and wish for less pressure, but what they do not know is that these pills are made to control birth rate, having a hidden goal of reducing the population. Crake explains: “The BlyssPluss Pill would also act as a sure-fire one-time-does-it-all birth-control pill, for male and female alike, thus automatically lowering the population level.” (355) Moreover, the character Crake takes the advantage of this human desire and manipulates the pill so that a cruel disease is spread to every human being. The humans’ weakness in falling for things strongly desired, give chances to many with the heart of evil to harm them. The Oryx and Crake warns the society that the cost to having many greedy wants, even when knowing having to disrupt the nature, is massive and deadly.

Likewise, people and industries mentioned in The Corporation also desire for excessive profits using any method they can think of, including sickening lives. For example, Monsanto introduces a product of theirs named ‘Posilac’, an injection that a cow may take to increase milk. Many farmers believe that it is safe for both human and cow, claims Monsanto, uses this product simply to increase their profit. The product itself is unnecessary but people still greed for the money it generates, and Jeremy Rifkin states, “[The society] is overproducing milk, we are actually having governments around the world pay farmers not to produce milk.’’ The farmers forget the harms that they are doing towards the cows because they are very much blinded by the profits. Furthermore, hidden from the public, the saying that it has no hidden harms is false. The milk contain chemicals, that when drank by human, may cause “heart, lung, kidney bleeding, also reproductive effects, [and] also a whole series of other problems,” proves Samuel Epstein, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Medicine (The Corporation). Yet again, this documentary proves too that unnecessary problems occur when people disregard the nature and endanger it.

To conclude, both the novel Oryx and Crake and the documentary film The Corporation clearly warn society of the potential consequences when the nature is altered or harmed. The similar evidences, proving the cost to of these actions, from both mediums are the danger from inventions and sicknesses from nature. Lives should not be altered for selfish needs or wants for they are part of the Mother Nature and these two pieces will give today’s society a clear warning.
