Chatspeak. Why do people find it so appealing?

Personally, I don't understand it.
Sure, 'brb' and 'lol' are perfectly fine every so often, but why do people not spell out their words?
I can't understand them most of the time, and I'm sure there are other people that side with me. I'm not trying to bash on anyone, I'm sure people who use chatspeak type faster and all that, but... with simple words like 'you' why not just add the extra two letters?
This is all just my opinion, and I want to know your opinion too.
What do you think of chatspeak?
Do you use it, or would you ever use it?
How many of your friends use it?
Why do you think people use it?

Mattie 10-13-2007 02:29 PM

I honestly don't understand chatspeech. I find it more difficult to remember all the 'u's and '2's than to just type out the words, I can kind of see why people would do it though; it's l33t speech that I don't understand, surely that takes longer to workout than just to type the words, right?
Still, each to their own. :)

Saves time supposedly, but not much.

Rabid Ice Weasel 10-13-2007 02:30 PM

As far as I know (and every time I've asked I got the same response), they use chatspeak because it's "quicker" than normal speech. I don't think it is, and it's a bitch to understand, but hey, to each his own. I use chatspeak when I'm being a dork and fooling around (and only then!), but otherwise I keep as far away from it as I can.

lyk iT iS sOO aW3sOme!!11

joking..I really don't see why its so great..
when someone types in chat speak I have to decode it to understand what the heck they are talking about.

I understand that it saves time when chatting with someone, but I don't particularly care for chat speak. I'd rather type out what I want to say than all the abbreviations. Some of them get quite confusing. Especially when you get someone your chatting with who can't type or spell all that well. People like that really need to forget about chat speak and type out what they wanna say cause you won't be able to really understand them otherwise.

Sagitar 10-13-2007 02:33 PM

I have no idea..

personally, I hate chat speak. I don't understand why people use it. Are they too lazy to type the words correctly or what?
it looks stupid and gives a really stupid image of the person. :/

Same here. Like when I'm goofing off with my friend Johnny, we'll go onto the Gaian forums (Yes, I am an avid lover of Gaia, but Menewsha is tied on the list), and just tick off all the n00blets by speaking like them.
It's rather fun, but it takes me hours to type it out and figure out what I'm saying x.x
xD
1337 confuses me just as much as chatspeak does. I used to want to rip out my hair when people used 1337.

Arousal 10-13-2007 02:35 PM

Because they get lazy and stop caring.

HIM_ROCK 10-13-2007 02:36 PM

Sometimes it alright just not when your posting in a forum. Yes it saves time when typing it but it takes longer to read if your not familliar with some of it.

Sometimes you just want to ask them d0 y0u 5p33k 3ng4l15h?(do you speek english for those of you who can't be bothered to work it out/haven't seen that used before. Just to annoy them. I'm on several sites where you can post on forums and you get sick of telling people to type in full not in txt tlk or chat speak and then they try to insult you using chat speak when they are just making themselves look like a fool by doing that.

Uh, usually it's not very hard to figure out what people are saying.

Connie 10-13-2007 02:40 PM

I'm in the same boat. I don't like it, it annoys me like not much else will. Luckily, not many of my friends use it.

Clickmyname 10-13-2007 02:40 PM

I understand it, and am learning to adapt and not get flustered over it.

But I don't appreciate it.
Txt tlk is completely unnecessary when you have a wide keyboard of easily-pushed buttons in front of you.

Text talk anywhere but a cellphone is sheer laziness.
Text messages is where text talk should stay.

stacey 10-13-2007 02:41 PM

I'm not exactly a grammar nazi, and I type it sometimes too (i.e. - to make fun of people) but I hate it.

Sadly though, at least half my friends type like that. D: It's like "Dude, shut up and type your words. I can wait an extra MINUTE."

Strychnine Kisses 10-13-2007 02:42 PM

I don't even use chatspeak when I text. That's just how much I can't tolerate it xD

If you use txt tlk for a long time when you are typing messages ect it actually gets to a poin when where you are trying to type a message in full you keep using txt tlk insted I did that once and now I hardly ever use txt tlk because of that reason. I only ever use it if I am texting someone or if it's something like brb.

What do you think of chatspeak?
A: I honestly hate chatspeak. It is an eyesore, and I find that when I try to type it I feel like gouging my own eyes out. It takes me longer to type out chatspeak becuase writing proper sentences is so normal to me, I have to think about how to type chatspeak as opposed to simple letting my fingers do the talking with writing writing proper sentences.

Do you use it, or would you ever use it?
A: I never use, except to mock the most annoying n00bs. I would never use it in a serious conversation or discussion and I would be quite happy if other people would do so as well, even though I know many will not. Really, I do not see why so many people are in love with chatspeak. It is much easier to read if your words include their proper vowells and punctuation.

How many of your friends use it?
A: A couple of them. Mostly it is just the younger, less educated friends, and by less educated I mean the kids who are still in Junior High School. I would not be happy if I found some of my college friends using chatspeak in any situation beyond instant messaging and text messaging.

Why do you think people use it?
If they are educated to a point where they can obviously write out a proper sentence, I cannot help but look down on them. It is not kind of me to do that, but like I said, I cannot help it. I believe that what you write and how you write it should reflect your education level, or lack of education if the chatspeak is too much. I can accept anyone under the 11th grade level who use chatspeak, but 11 and up really should know better. I have met a woman who claims to be an english teacher who writes in chatspeak and I have noticed that many of my peers, and even myself to an extent, lost a good deal of respect towards her. If she is teaching english and grammar, would it not make sense for her to use it in everyday life? How does that saying go? Use it or lose it? I feel that I must put this into practice or my mind will begin to degenerate to a point where I am waking up at three in the morning just to watch Bevis and Butthead on MTV. The horror.

[Dead.Angel] 10-13-2007 02:52 PM

The only chat speak I use is lol, brb, Lmao and stuff like that. Chat speak annoys the shit out of me. Its just another way for people to be lazy and find an easy way out of things or they just could totally not have LEARNED any English what so ever in school>.< I know a few of my friends from school use it XD And now I don't talk to them on the computer much .-.

MelanholiC 10-13-2007 03:12 PM

I use some chat speak
Like "lol", "OMG", "GTG" and "BRB"
but nothing else...
typing u instead of you is not gonna happen.
and typing 2 instead of to. never in my life.

but I do change the words like "meh" cute speak xD

or adding extra letters to make a scream effect...
"AHHHHHHHH"

... I'm not being that literate xD.. I use smiley's almost in every sentence.

ElendarSilvermoon 10-13-2007 03:58 PM

I can understand how it'd save time in a texting situation. In the rare occasion that I do text and I'm in a hurry and have other things to do (usually I'm at work or something), I'll use chat speak. But in a normal chatting or texting situation I'll write out all of my words. It's more legible that way and it keeps me from looking like a jackass.

Damaxan 10-13-2007 04:00 PM

People use it, from what my friends who use chatspeak have told me, because it's easier and quicker to type.

For me, I think it's easier to type out "you" instead of u or "be right back" instead of brb.

Maybe I'm just weird, but. xD;;;

Kuro_ichigo 10-13-2007 04:01 PM

Oh chatspeaks for lazy aim conversations that has carried over to internet forms, I personally hate it.

Same here. xD i also use 'rofl' a lot on MSN since it opens up a icon laughing. xD It's cute. <3

i don't understand people saying it takes them forever to read it. :/ i don't see how~ i understand it in a few seconds, and go on with my life. i barely care about it [though i prefer if nobody used it regularly] but i get very annoyed when people mess up on grammar, eg like runned. >_O

Mozzetti 10-13-2007 04:26 PM

  • I absolutely hate chatspeak. XDDD

I have to type everything out perfectly... It's like OCD or something. XD
