Lemon's Drabbles - Trickles of Daylight
Trickles of Daylight
Welcome to my drabbles. Often, I find myself with some spare time and nothing of any great interest to humor myself with. After reading over what drabbles are, I wanted to give it a try. The title comes from the fact that I write many of my short stories in the morning prior to the sunrise, as opposed to normal waking hours. To test my creativity, I am creating personalities for several characters I have not done more than doodle. The main challenge I sight is the 100 word limit to each word. |

The Characters
I will update this post as I develop my characters. |
The Art
I may be tempted to provide illustrations with each post. They will go here. |
001. Morning
Guilt enveloped Penelope as she stepped away from the brother she was determined to leave behind. His doleful brown eyes followed her trembling lean figure. Confusion tormented his little body, but he could not cry out for her to return. She turned the corner. Once her image vanished from his sights, he crumpled to the barren earth and wept silent tears. Small hands grasped for anything to latch onto, but not even strings of grass sprouted from the empty lands to offer comfort. Dizzy from the sudden abandonment and the heat from the rising sun, Elias bowed his heavy head. |
002. Noon
His stomach ached throughout the morning, allowing the pain to radiate beyond his abdomen. A thought of food stimulated saliva, wetting his hot mouth. Swallowing hard to ease the ache of his parched throat, his eyes lifted from the packed soil. Birds of prey hovered above, casting shadows with their broad wingspans. Elias shielded his eyes to the piercing brightness of the star above. The shuffling of feet startled him. “Another one,” murmured a weary voice. A sharp thrust struck his gut from the soft words. He was stripped of his identity and clumped together with the other abandoned children. |
003. Afternoon
He was not used to eating breakfast so late in the day. After he consumed a third glass of chilled water and the plate of fruits, Elias brushed his sweeping eyelashes over his eyes to allow tears to flow down his soft face. Fearful of a vanishing act if he glanced away from the food and the inability to halt his emotions, he shoveled every savory morsel. Circling him were adults. They spoke critically about what they should do with the new addition as if he were not present. His cheeks had flushed brightly from the immediate disdain they expressed. |
004. Twilight
As the wind blew, blades of grass licked his ankles. The moon bathed his small form, cooling him from the searing heat from the daylight. From the distance sat the small town. The meeting house was lit with candles as the citizens debated on his fate. He missed Penelope. She had the lullabies that he longed for at the moment. His hands clutched his legs. Elias wished she was not getting married. He wanted her back. A harsh gust propelled him onto his side onto the cool earth. With heavy tears, his eyes closed to spill them upon his face. |
