Careers and Dream Jobs

This has been on my brain because I might be changing my major soon...

My dream job would be a novelist, but I know it wouldn't actually be a good job for me. Why? I'm an incredible procrastinator. I can't force myself to write unless there's a deadline, and when there is a deadline, I spaz and write poorly.

So instead I thought 'well I like Japanese, I'll study that and get a job translating!' and now, in my fifth semester of college...I've realized that I'm so-so at Japanese, and I wouldn't really like translating as a full-time job. (Secondary education: teaching you just how dumb you can be.)

So now I'm thinking of becoming a personal finance counselor. ...Yeah, it's a switch all right.

So what's your dream job? Is it the same thing as the career you're planning for? (Or in, for those of you already in the workforce full-time?)

I hope to one day be a Veterinarian. I don't know how well that is going to work out though...I think I'd love the job, I just don't know if I'd actually get accepted to a college for it.

My dream job is to be a full time massage therapist. So far I've gone through the schooling and am a licensed massage therapist but I haven't found any full time work as a massage therapist yet. So for now I do massage on the side and work part time at a library. I'm planning on going into Thai massage eventually, but I need to save up money so that I can go through the schooling.
I also would love to be a published writer, but I know that's going to take awhile. And that it's possible that it may not happen right away.

hockeygrl05 10-16-2007 07:34 PM

ever since kindergarten, i have always wanted to be a marine biologist.... my dream job forever and still today, as a sophmore in HS, i still want to... but as i get to research the subject better than before, i noticed that i have to go through 8 years of college to go a PhD, which is what i will need for the job. So that isnt really exciting, and now because all those cool shows like CSI, Law & Order, Forensic files, etc. i think i may want to be a forensic scientist ..... still and iffy decision.... i still cant truley decided....

My dream job is anything that'll let me earn enough money to retire as soon as possible and live my dream retirement.

I'm a co-manager of a holiday complex. Thrilling >.<
Bleh. I guess it's better than a lot of jobs. At least I get to work from home, I don't have to put up with crappy managers like I did in some of my previous jobs and I have more free time than could possibly be healthy... I'll still complain though, as work's always fun to complain about :D

I only really had dream jobs when I was younger, now I just don't care as long as whatever I do for work is over as soon as possible and pays the bills at the end of the month.

I like Russian a ton. I am thinking about being a foreign affairs representative between business. That would be way rad.

Melancholy 10-16-2007 07:42 PM

Ideally i'd love to be a comic book writer/illustrator.

If that doesnt happen, i'll probably follow some form of illustrating or maybe try running a home fashion business on the internet. :]

DarkMelancholy 10-16-2007 07:44 PM

Well, I don't really have a dream job... perhaps, a writer or a graphic artist. But that is just a dream job, you know "if dreams came true, they wouldn't be a dream."

I took one of those career tests, and the following would be jobs that would fit me perfectly: anything in the medical field - doctor/pharmacist, anything creative - artist/writer, anything helping people - school councilor/social worker.

Yeah, I still don't know what I really want to do. ><

AppleDumplinCutie 10-16-2007 07:44 PM

I don’t have a dream job per say as I have a dream hobby I could so make into a job. I would really love to be a dollhouse maker. I’d love to be independently wealthy (by winning the lottery some day hopefully) and I would love to take architecture, interior design, and woodworking. I would love to put them together by hand and give them away to places like hospitals and orphanages…. And of course sell my works. I’d also LOVE to take graphic design. I’d love to get a Wacom board and really learn how to make good use of it. I think I’m going to get one for Christmas.

If I absolutely had to pick a job I’d like to be a nurse. My aunt was a nurse and I think it’s something I could do well, or not even a people nurse I think I’d really love to be a vet tech. Animal nurses rock!

charis_mae 10-16-2007 07:56 PM

DarkMelancholy: Maybe if you found a way to combine all three--like discovering new therapies or medications to help sick people?

I dunno...it can be really confusing at times. That's why it's taken me so long to decide anything.

AppleDumplinCutie: Being a dollhouse maker does sound like it would be really fascinating. Good luck getting the Wacom board!

Hockeygrl05: Forensic science sounds like it would take a lot of studying too. How long are the programs for that?

Spatterdash 10-16-2007 08:33 PM

I've got one or two. I'd really like to get involved in politics - there's a part of me that dreams of being prime minister, but I'm more likely to end up as a political adviser or suchlike. That way I get to the dirty work behind the scenes and let someone else take the blame.
I also wouldn't mind working for the radio, or being an artist for comic books. Bit of a disparate bunch of jobs, but why not have more than one dream?

charis_mae 10-16-2007 08:53 PM

I think most people have one dream job because it makes it easier to focus your efforts, but if you can get more than one, go for it!

AkashaHeartilly 10-16-2007 08:57 PM

When I was in high school my dream job was to be a comic illustrator or character designer for videos. I've pretty much given up on that. I'm lazy and can not always find a way to make art. While I love it, I've discovered it's just not my drive.

Now either thinking of doing make-up for a living. Special Effects and Movie Make-up. While right now, I already have the know how to go to a Beauty parlor and do teenage girls make-up for prom. I lack the slip of paper that says I can and well, that won't pay the bills.

That or either specialize in doing dead people make-up and getting a job at the morgue doing something there. I just found out you can volunteer for the morgue and now going to look into that.

MasterChiefrei 10-16-2007 09:10 PM

Animator. Hands down. That's what I wanted to be ever since I could understand anything. XD I always liked to draw and ever since I saw Sailor Moon in 3rd grade I got hooked on that style and ran with it. I am studying in art and hope to move onto computer graphics, animation, etc. So far all I can do is comic form but to be able to see my characters move and talk on screen, instead of just in my head, would be an accomplishment. >w< If I can't draw for a living I may as well not breathe.

Isabella 10-16-2007 09:20 PM

My dream job is a teacher, which is a good thing as that is what I'm going to school for, it's what I've wanted to do since I was about 5 years old. I did recently change my major from History to Native American Studies though, as I finally realized my passion in the field...I'd also love to be a writer, we'll have to see on that one though

Ariel 10-16-2007 09:25 PM

I was going to make a thread like this! :o

Anyway, I'd love to work for Blur Studio and Pixar. I've always wanted to be a classical animator ever since I saw Batman, and a 3D animator ever since I saw Toy Story. I'm taking a 3D Animation program right now. It's fun, but really hard at the same time. But if successful, you can make a lot of money. (:

Ithir 10-16-2007 09:29 PM

I've pretty much decided to be a teacher of either art or history.
Or, as my friend suggested, professor of art history. xP

Sadly, teachers do not get paid a lot. D:
But I'd probably be an artist and writer on the side anyway.

mystic kiwi 10-16-2007 09:38 PM

Well…I used to want to be a vet, finished all but one semester of school, switch from wanting to be a vet to animation, figured that wouldn’t work, went for computer technologies, that didn’t go so well, now I’m trying to be a radio DJ because that really clicked with me and I’ve actually kept interest in something for once. I also tend to have a big mouth so talking over a mic is wonderful in my opinion. I’m talking about radio DJing, not in the club playing music type of DJing. I also love doing promotional things and meeting new people so even if I don’t get a DJing job right away I’d be happy doing promos for a while.

Sweet Faux Pas 10-16-2007 09:51 PM

My dream job would be professional photography, taking pictures of people and nature. I especially love nature, because whether its living or dying, its still beautiful. Well thats what I think; just my silly little opinion. I'm pretty good at taking pictures of nature, but I need a new, expensive and good camera. ( I'm actually about to go out and take some pics, while the sun is going down.) I know that this isn't going to be able to support me, so I'm probably going to be a Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist (because people say I give good advice) or a Nurse. :]]

oHsoDemandinG 10-16-2007 09:56 PM

My dream job as of now is to be a 3d animator. I want to make 3d movies and video games.

Bubblegum 10-16-2007 09:58 PM

My dream job? Voice acting. I have an interesting voice, and I love creating different voices to go with different moods, characters, etc.
Traditional acting, whether on stage or in film, would be a blast as well. But that's pretty much one of the hardest fields to make it in. I can also sing, if that helps. Musicals, anyone? I'm not positively hideous, either. >>;;
Writing, also an excellent choice. I think one of the top jobs of amazing-ness would be being a sitcom writer. I don't know how well traditional noveling would work out, because I'm fairly short on attention when it comes to such things.

  • My dream job ever since I could remember was to be a Doctor. Growing up I would borrow my mom’s stethoscopes and give my stuffed animals checkups, or I’d operate on them with scissors and tweezers - then stitch them back up D= (I was a very crafty child xD). I was so fascinated by the medical field that while most kids my age were watching cartoons, I was watching the medical channel.

This continued all the way up till middle school when I had a math teacher who told me I’d never be good enough to be a doctor… so I got really discouraged because of that and I switched to art as my main focus even though deep down I still wanted to be a doctor.

And now… after awhile I realized I still rather do medical and who gives a damn what the old witch said. So here I am now, in college currently studying medicine and working on specializing in surgery and cancer treatments xD. Just goes to show you, that you can do anything you put your mind to =<. Not to mention I went back to her and I put my college acceptance letter in her face and said “Show’s what you know.”

I heard she recently got fired for her attitude and abusing the discipline system at the school. AHWOO! (Spartan yell xD)

    - But yah. I’m currently studying my dream job. =3.

Professional skateboarder.

I'd visit every part of the world and just hang out with kids from different cultures, give them some hope, and give away a bunch of free skateboards. And just doing what I love, for a living, for the fun of it.

I can't think of any job I'd rather have...
<3

Naiyo 10-16-2007 10:26 PM

well I am probably going to be getting my Japanese minor within the year. I think I will probably teach English over in Japan for a while because I really don't know what I want to be. DX
I currently work at a fast food place and I'm planning to be a waitress at the end of the school year for a little, figure things out. Only problem is I could never leave the country if I was in a relationship and I wouldn't want to stay in Japan so. *shrug* have to see what happens. >3<;;
