Urban legends

So, there are many weird stories and phenomena, true or false, that spread by the Internet, or word of mouth, akin to superstitions of old called urban legends. Many of us have already heard some of these. So why not share them here?

I'll start with one I found funny: Seagulls explode when they're fed Alka-Seltzer.

So, go on, andshare these!

Hehe, I've neeever heard that one.

I really wanna try it now. ;3;

I've heard that if you put a hamster in a microwave it'll explode. O_o;

woopdidoodoo 10-20-2007 11:43 AM

Okies so what about when the dog who ran away and came back to haunt its owner? you could hear it barking even though its body wasn't there anymore. I don't know, I couldn't think of a decent one.

There's supposed to be a ghost monkey somewhere on a bridge in England and it goes for anyone who goes near it because it's pretecting the place where his master's horse and cart went off the bridge. He belonged to one of those men who would have the moneky daance and collect money while he tuner the handle to make the music play.

Not sure if this counts as i think it's already been proven true, but if you feed a budgie lemonade, it's inability to hickcough will cause it to explode.

Do Chuck Norris jokes count as urban legends? :P

Chuck Norris counted to infinity. Twice.

Great topic !!
Well I have this one:
It was like 30 years ago in my town and we have a disco that is in front of a cemetery (yeah creepy) and there is this guy who goes to dance there one night and he meets a gorgeous girl, they dance and talk, the girl seemed shy...then he offers her a ride home and she says her home is really near, then he says ok let me at least go with you so I make sure you come back safe.
When they go out it is very dark and cold and the girl seems very pale, the guy offers his jacket and puts it on her shoulder and they go out of the disco, the girl crosses the street and looks at him with a sad look, she steps at the cemetery door and says it's ok I'll be fine and disappears...
When the guy tries to find her he realizes she has gone God know where, since the cemetery door was closed...he comes back home alone thinking about her...
A couple of weekends later he goes back to the disco and asks the barman for the girl, the barman laughs and says he has seen the ghost some guys see when they are drunk.
The guy is so shocked, he hadnt drink anything and he sort of doesnt believe the barman, as the abarman sees him in doubt he tells him to go to the girl's house and talk to the mother of her, it is a legend here, many men have seen it, he likes sweet young men.
The guy doesnt believe it but he goes to the house and sees an old woman in the garden, when she sees him she asks what does he want and he pretends not to know and tell her he is looking for a girl..and describes in detail what she remembers from that night...
The old lady looks at him sad...you have seen her too...she says...come with me I will show you something...
she walks a few blocks till the cememtery in front of the disco and enters it...minutes later she shows the guy a grave...here is my daughter, she died at a young age of 16 years old ...I think sometimes she returns at night to have fun at the disco she so much loved when she was alive but we never let her go cause she was too young and we wnted to protect her...
The guy looks at the grave sees his jacket hanged on it and cant belive it. He hugs the woman and cries....
O_O

aww the poor girl..but atleast shes lucky cause she still gets to come back and have fun...she gets to live the dream of eternal life..i guess when the club closes (if it does unfortunately) she'll have to find another place to have fun..thats not so bad right..atleast shes making people happy instead of freaking them out..well until they find out shes dead..then they cry..but atleast shes knows shes still loved :)

I like to go to Snopes ( an urban legend forum ) and I remember something I found there once. It goes something like this:

" I heard this one in a Nat'l Public Radio report a long time ago. The report was about National Parks and some of the problems they have. Many of the problems, according to the article, are because people don't know how to act in the wilderness.

So this park ranger was telling the reporter about bad things that happened to people in the National parks. According to this ranger, people try to get their pictures taken with bears."

Wait, it get stupider.

" He told how one parent smeared honey all over his child's head so the bear would play with him and make a cute picture."

Wait for it... here it is.

" The ranger was just about in tears as he told how the child got mauled."

I don't know if this counts, but I always have a drastic fear of mirrors at night. I heard that if you face a mirror opposite to a window, and you look into the mirror, some random old and creepy guy will show up. But if you look into the window, you won't see anyone.

Wow i've never heard that one but it sound's cool.

I know one where if you stand on the viaduct in Merthyr tydfil late at night you will see a train which used to run across it.

A very current one is if you hang out with a homosexual, you will become one. *rolls eyes* That guy named Carlos on comedy central proved that wrong.

Theres also the whole black cat crosses your path you get bad luck... I love black cats. So it's not true..

Then there is the one about eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away. A lie. You still have to go to the doctor, the apple won't protect you.

A true one though, is bed bugs. Really gross things that live in your sheets and eat dead skin particles. Yes they do exist...

A current favourite of mine is the Hollywood-popularized idea that if you expose something to radiation, it will glow / become radioactive itself. Entirely untrue, but a damn large pile of people believe it.

Dystopia 10-20-2007 06:32 PM

o.o; I feel sorry for all the creatures that had to explode for these facts to be proven true.

Chi 10-20-2007 06:35 PM

I hope you know that feeding seagulls Alka-Seltzer is definitely true. It's not a legend, but I think the thread creator knows this. I've seen it happen. :[ My cousin had a lot of problems.

He also once peed in a pile of chemicals in a bucket and set a shack on fire, too. I forget what chemicals they were though..

That sounds quite similar to a story I heard back in high school about my 3rd year (junior) English teacher, Mrs. Sampson. Apparently, when her kids were really small, they were playing with the cat and they had put it in the microwave. The cat exploded inside and there was a rumor where if you said "meow" when you're in her class, she goes nuts. We tested out that theory though (since everyone hated her) and nothing happened. I'm pretty sure she's aware of this story though. xD It was like... "passed down from kid generation to kid generation" as Sid from Hey Arnold would say.

The saying it's like finding a needle in a hay stack is true. Farmers would have a meter long bit of metal and they would put it in their hay stack and if it was still there in the morning then you're a good farmer and if not you're a bad farmer.

I'm not sure really but I think it would be if no one had stolen their needle then they were a good farmer because it was still there and secure and they would be a bad one if it wasn't there because someone had stolen it and their farm wasn't secure.

Metal used to be very valuable, even though it is now,
People would steal it from anywhere they could find, Like for example, In the movie "October Sky" they go and take a rail road rail.
