Very annoying protagonists
Have you ever watched a movie/ played a game/ read a book/ whose main protagonists were so perfect and annoying that they made you wish you could jump in and help the villains get rid of them once and for all? Or, more briefly, the protagonsist were Mary Sues/ Gary Stus of the worst kind? I, for example, hated Bloom from Winx Club to no end, particularly because of the cheesy ways she learned new spells so easily and saved the day. The worst was when she realised the Trix Witches had not taken away all of her power (after they seemingly had) and all she had to do was to awaken it. Oh, how I wish I could take that power away from and hand it to those witches. Another example was Princess Tenko and the Guardians of Magic. I watched it looong ago, but I wish I never had. The Guardians of Magic were little more than Tenko's fanboys who just cheered her on as she kicked the asses of Janna and Jason (The twins who want to get the Starfire Stones and use their powers for evil (sic)) thanks to more Dei ex Machina than I can count with the fingers of one hand. I wasn't surprised at all to hear that the show had been cancelled justafter 13 episodes.
So... Have you had any similar experiences with any works of fiction you've gotten your hands on? Who was it that you found so annoying, and why? Oh, and also, the story you're going to talk about can be in any media, not just movies. Finally, the mods will be free to move ths thread to Books or Writing forum if they see fit. |
The four siblings in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, drove me absolutely nuts, especially Lucy. The four of them, with the exception of Edmund, were like the epitome of do-gooders and it made the story of that book/movie rather boring, because it made it seem as though they couldn't POSSIBLY do anything wrong.
I mean, sure they run off into the wardrobe where they weren't meant to go, but as children they befriend pretty much the whole area of Narnia, and win an epic battle with a messed up old witch. Come ON. |
Malfoy and Snape. D<
I know they add to the story, but sometimes I wanna stab them in the jaw. >_O |

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant... I couldn't stand him, and I couldn't finish the series either.
Rhapsody books, however they are called. She was the most terrible Mary Sue I ever had a misfortune of encountering, in whole literature. Catti-Brie. Richard and Kahlan. Eragon. People obviously irritate me. xD |
Ugh yes I have expirence that. I hate the character Cho of of Harry Potter, she drove me insane...and Umbridge, I wanted to stangle her. All the characters off of thoes barbie movies (dont ask was very bored) are so perfect that I want to strangle them..what else...oh I hate Sakura off of the original Naruto. She drove me insane...I also hated Sue of of Narnia...I think thats about it, though I do have a longer list of what characters annoy the heck out of me.

HAHA at your quoate on Bloom fron Winx Club.
Lawl. I thought about the same thing while I watched that show. :/ I think about that stuff alot, the last time I felt that way about a TV Character would probably be on Jen from 6Teen. Shes so perfectly normal, kind, and strong. And that bugs me. :/ Everyone likes her too much and she acts so strong, I wish I could jump in and tell her shes not that cool. D; Hehe. They should so make more shows in where the Villain wins. Why are we always forced to side with the "Good Guy"? For all we know, the "Villain" may be the "good guy" where the "Good Guy" is a total flake. D< Just like in Bugs Bunny. Poor Elmer Fudd, all he wants is to shoot the bunny, with good reason too - Bugs keeps stealing his carrots, and yet that damn Bugs uses his cartoon witchery on Fudd. D: Poor, poor Fudd... D: I'm getting off topic though, and starting to ramble. o.o So I'll stop now. o3o Edit: OMG *POKES POST ABOVE* I HATE CHO FROM HARRY POTTER! D:< She's an annoying little BTCHO that gets everything handed to her way too easily, Harry Potter likes her, She aces all her subjects, everybody loves Cho, PFT! SHES A WHORE! xD ;P She toys with Harrys heart. D: </3 Also, Hermoine ticks me off, too. Shes too perfect..and..self-centered. D; |
The main character Sabrina in The Siters Grimm! She was really snobby and thought sh knew everything!

i can see how Bloom mastering everything can end up annoying. but i cant hate her lol. really. blame the writers or directors of certain episodes, who want Bloom to be near "invincible" half the time.
-Harry Potter LOL dont know him enough book-wise to hate him. but the whole "my life is in danger, so instead of thinking about how to avoid being kiled, i'll just put myself and everyone i love in harms way till things sort themselves out" can get tedious -Red Ranger/Sentai it varies. sometimes the character is just cursed to be the perfect: leader, good guy, bad guy turned, angst, nice boy. somethings are just a bit too set up for him. i get that its in the script. but having the character grow into being a leader, instead of just "oh you qualify to be the best Ranger/Sentei right off the bat!" -Yugi Mutou "and i'll use this card to do this, then use this card to do that, you will not defeat me bleh blah blah" there are times when you see Yugi without calling Yami. yet when he does. the guy is near unbeatable. yeah yeah "king of games". but Yugi who is suppose to be so good, actually sucks, to a point were you want him to at least knock down some the of the opponents points. |
Harry Potter annoyed be a great deal of the time throughout the series. The fifth book should have been called, "Harry Potter: Attack of the Whiney Brat".
I have issues with Temperance Brennan from the tv show Bones. It is one of my favorites, but her character started out much more wooden than she is now. I have problems with a woman that is apparently a genius but has no knowledge of pop culture. I get annoyed with protagonists that are obnoxiously perfect. Lily Evans from the Harry Potter series annoyed me in that regard. Why did everyone love that woman? We see no evidence that she is that awesome or that pretty. Maybe she put out a whole heck of a lot? I also get annoyed when a protagonist that is supposed to be really smart makes really dumb decisions. Why can't some of these people just tell the truth?? |
LMAO @ Bones!

I just hate everyone in Pokemon, each and every single one of them. Those damn goody-goodys. They run into problems and somehow have to solve EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. |
@Tank_girl
And that's why Golden Compass was made, its the anti-narnia book. Anyway, I have a hatred for the Harry Potter books due to it just seems that every book has a new character to hate in them. |

(Cho must die! x-x) Katara from AtLA annoys me a bit as well. D: |
It's strange, really...most of the protagonists I dislike at any point, I like at another point. And most that I knowparticularly well aren't annoying because they're perfect, but annoying just because...they're annoying.
Example: Sakura from Naruto. In the beginning...I wanted to strangle her at a few points there. Creepy little Sasuke fangirl. D: But as her character changed, I got to like her...a lot. She actually has an important purpose in the series now...though early Sakura still annoys the living piss out of me. Pre-timeskip Sakura = semi-realistic version of what would happen if a random Sasuke fangirl got inserted into the series. Don't try to deny it. There's Yi-Che from the movie Moon Child...when she was first introduced? GOOD LORD. She was so...damn...DEPRESSING. And CREEPY, to be honest. She always had the SAME expression; she looked like she was addicted to Botox. Even in the middle of a particularly chaotic and hilarious scene, she'd just be sitting there with that same angsty look. It made me wish that the devil child would just get shot. Ironically enough, it was AFTER she married Shou that I started to like her. I have three friends who are REALLY surprised I don't hate her. XD; Something I've noticed is that the annoying, way-too-perfect characters are actually quite prevalent in kids' shows. I've always guessed this to be because little kids are impressed by power and perfection. Of course, as we get older...it just gets amazingly irritating. I wanted to think my parents were perfect when I was little...now, the thought of someone in real life being perfect gives me the creeps like there's no tomorrow. XD; So if you want to see painfully, obnoxiously perfect, watch a kids' show/movie. I once got forced to sit through a Barbie movie, and...*SKREEM* |
HARRY POTTER. :C
I am an obsessive fan of the books, but I really and truly dislike the main character. He's so IRRITATING. "Ohh, I'm Harry freakin' Potter, I had a srsly tough life guys, but now I save EVERYTHING! ALL the TIME! And what's more is that I can't even die from a curse that EVERYONE else in the WORLD would die from!! You know WHY? 'CAUSE I'M HARRY FREAKIN' POTTER!" Oooh, he makes me so mad. Actually, quite a few characters from the Potter series annoyed me at one point or another, specifically Cho and Cedric. |
Yes. Sponge bob and all the other characters on there. I hate that show. There are others that I hate, that my younger siblings watch, but I'm not going to list them all. Oh, I don't like Will smith in the fresh prince of bel whatever. He's annoying. I also don't like Dora the explora or those guys on blues clues. They're so dumb. I hate those shows <>_<>

I'm kinda mixed on Will, though. Sometimes he makes me laugh, other times I want to punch him for the same thing that made me laugh before. XD;; |
Has anybody mentioned Jar Jar Binks yet?
Or are we only doing main protagonists? OOH!!!! I know... that woman played by Cate Capshaw in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? The blithering blonde that had no business being Jones's sidekick in the first place? Yeah whenever I watch that movie I truly wish something bad would have happened to her. Maybe eaten by the crocodiles near the end, along with Mola Ram? Maybe Shorty would get sick of her and do it... lol Oh and I must say... as far as main protagonists go, Will Turner from PotC is about as one-dimensional as they come. I mean sure, he might be nice to look at, but he's f#$%ing Luke Skywalker in a pirate film. Marching off to rescue his father, better known as Darth Bootstrap, from enslavement to the Emperor of the seas, Darth Davey. The only thing missing is a diminutive jedi mentor. I think it certainly hasn't hurt the series that Capn Jack has sort of become the central character. Oh and I think Tidus of Final Fantasy 10 fame deserves special mention. He was irritating as hell. Although admittedly, I found it intriguing that he was seemingly the only agnostic in spira :P |
I agree with the Harry Potter thing. However since he was such a crappy character I didn't go far in the books or movies. It's hard to care about something when the main character in it fails horribly. xD
And I once borrowed a video game from my friend. I wanted to kill the girl it in. It was so awful and cheesy. It was like, Tales of something with an S. I don't remember the name. I think the girls name was like Collette or something. >.> |

But I liked Jar Jar! n_n; Cute. |

@TheSatah - Yes! Will Turner seems to exist only because the filmmakers believed they needed a stereotypical stoic boring lead hero to detract from Sparrow's intrinsic awesomeness. Although, I was SLIGHTLY moved when he took the Flying Dutchman just to save his dad. Too bad he can only get laid once every... ten years was it? lol
And Jar Jar... if you can get around with his blatant child appeal, his overdone clumsiness and ESPECIALLY his ridiculous voice acting, perhaps you'll find a likeable, naive but warmhearted character who's heart is in the right place and is a great role model for kids, showing how the biggest screw-ups can still become heroes. I just think he's annoying. ^^ |
ANY of the main females from any Tales game drive me up the friggin' wall. Colette was ditzy, oblivious, too optimistic and all the while she thinks she can save everyone everywhere without fail. I hated her with a passion and always wanted to stick her head through one of her chakrams and give it a good pull.
Shirley was awful, too. She was so perfect, sweet, girly, gentle and caring that you wanted to throw her in a bar full of drunk bikers and shit. Needless to say, whenever I had them in my parties, I let them die. c: |
Just bumping this up to see if anyone has anymore.
I found this amusing. |
Bella "My-only-flaw-is-my-endearing-clumsiness" Swan.
Dear Lord, I wanted Edward to suck her precious blood until Bella was good and dead. |
