When do you finally break down and take that medicine?

I hate medicine... I have a lot of side effects especially drowsiness and weird shakes afterwards.

I don't like the taste no matter what flavor it is. Ew. Medicine tastes horrible.

I read a lot of studies about how cold medicine only temporarily stops the symptoms, not cure the cold.

So, this morning, I woke up and was sniffling and sneezing the whole morning. Our house ran out of tissue paper so I ended up going through a whole roll of toilet paper... that's when I thought I better get some help.

I was blaming my cold on the sudden cold front but I remembered I didn't even have 24 hours of sleep at night this week... ugh.

SO, I finally broke down and took some cold medicine. I stopped sniffling and sneezing. INSTEAD, I now have the shakes in my hands and arms and a hot feeling along my spine and back of my head...

I kinda regret taking the medicine. This shaking in my hands won't stop!!

So, discuss *do not copy and paste and do a survey with these spoonfeds!!!*:

-When do you feel like you need medicine?
-When do you finally give in and take medicine?
-What's your view on cold medicines?
-Do you use toilet paper to blow your nose?
-What side effects do you get from medicine?
-Are these shakes in my hand normal?
-Is it starting to get cold where you are yet? (I live in Florida and a cold front just came)

-When do you feel like you need medicine?
Lol, the most medicinal thing I'll take is Halls. I never feel the need to take medicine. XD
-When do you finally give in and take medicine?
Never!!
-What's your view on cold medicines?
I think they're bad for you.. I mean, sure they get rid of the cold symptoms for a while but then there are like, 600 side effects.
-Do you use toilet paper to blow your nose?
All the time, I'm usually too lazy to find the tissue paper.
-What side effects do you get from medicine?
I never take medicine so I don't really know. XP
-Are these shakes in my hand normal?
No... I don't think thats normal at all. DX
-Is it starting to get cold where you are yet? (I live in Florida and a cold front just came
Its been cold since like, the beginning of October. Haha, crazy Canada weather.

life in red and black 11-03-2007 07:52 PM

@Hokuto-
dang. I forgot to tell people to not copy and paste my spoonfeds...

You never take medicine?? Wow. I hope it's because you don't get sick much.

Heh. They say it's bad to use toilet paper instead of tissue paper...

Uh, it's not normal? I'm starting to get shakes all over... >.<

Re: When do you finally break down and take that medicine?

Hmm. I don't like taking medication. I get headaches from allergies (food and pollen both), and I take Ibuprofen or Anacin for that. I'll take Pseudoephedrine and Mucinex if my allergies are really acting up.

I've never had any bad side effects from medication before, really. I was on Ritalin for a week when I was a kid, and it made me depressed. And I think my brain is weird or something, because Nyquil keeps me awake, but I use caffeine pills to put me to sleep sometimes. But I've never had any other weird side effects.

I don't think much of cold medication. When I have a cold or a stomach bug or something, I just start drinking massive quantities of orange juice and getting more sleep, to baby my immune system. (Hey, I managed to fight off the lung infection that took over my dorm last year without antibiotics!) I trust my body to kill anything I contract.

juniper_silver 11-03-2007 07:54 PM

I hate taking medicine too. I almost never do. The last time I took medicine was when I had a terrible headache. The only asprin we had was extra strength excedrin. It said to take 2 pills, but I only took 1/2 a pill because I hadn't taken asprin in years.

My headache went away almost immediately, but I started throwing up. Yuck. It's pretty worthless how a lot of medicines will do that to you. I'm just glad I didn't take the 2 pills recommended.

Cold fronts don't cause colds though. Being cold has nothing to do with catching a cold. Viruses cause colds and temperature doesn't affect it. I just learned that in biology this year and I was really surprised. It's just weird to think about the fact that putting on a coat won't guard against catching a cold.

Spatterdash 11-03-2007 07:58 PM

I don't bother with cold medicine - there's no cure for a cold, you just have to ride it through. Painkillers and soup are my best bets for a remedy.
The only medication I ever take regularly is my hayfever stuff in the summer months, and I'll take that whenever I wake up with a tickly feeling in my nose. Which is most days from April to August.
Apart from that, if I'm prescribed something, I'll take it regularly no matter how nasty it is, since I'll be needing it to get better. But I've rarely had to take prescribed drugs for anything serious.

life in red and black 11-03-2007 08:00 PM

@Ashtara_Silunar - darn! I ran out of OJ. Will eating an orange do? >.< I only eat allergy medicine when it's a rash. My allergies act up and I just usually tough it out.

@juniper_silver - I don't know why, but I've always just went to bed with a headache instead of taking aspirin. I'd cry in pain and fall asleep that way. Yea, I meant I was feeling cold and I thought it was from the actual cold and not from getting a cold. I feel the shivers sometimes when I have a cold. I learned that a long time ago that the cold doesn't have that much effect on whether you'll catch a cold, but my mom never believes me... she's so old fashioned thinking that an extra coat would protect me from catching a cold!!

edit:
@Splatterdash - Yea, I need to stop the sniffling so I can do my homework or I would've just gotten some sleep instead of medicine... but now I have the shakes and can't concentrate on my homework...

Ashtara_Silunar 11-03-2007 08:02 PM

@Juniper - I wish medication worked that well on me. >.< I have a really high tolerance for pretty much all medication, so if I have a bad headache, I usually have to take twice the standard dose of Ibuprofen. My doctor okayed it, though.

Oh, and being cold for long periods of time does weaken your immune system, so it does indirectly help you catch a cold. Not that the virus cares.

Edit - @life - It's got Vitamin C, so it should work the same. I just like the juice because it helps me stay hydrated at the same time.
Hope you feel better soon!

Zoe 11-03-2007 08:04 PM

I have to take it straight away, because I'm a wuss and just want to be rid of the pain/symptoms.

Colds are annoying and cramps and things usually wake me up in the middle of the night and just keep BUGGING me so I can't sleep ; o; . I don't mind headaches so I'd usually stick them out [plus i rarely get them] except they mean I can't concentrate well.

Lombardy 11-03-2007 08:04 PM

Hm, I don't mind medicine actually...
I take it a lot.
Right now I have pills for my acne.
( Well, I don't have any pimple because I take it. >__>; )
I figured out how to take pills a long time ago.
Although before I used to get so worked up over pills,
that like my throat closed up. XD

It's honestly all in your head if you can't take pills.
You swallow food bigger than a pill.

life in red and black 11-03-2007 08:12 PM

@Ashtara_Silunar - ah, I feel better right now - just ate a handful of Cheerios - I don't know why I feel better... but I was hungry. Mmm... all the oranges are in the fridge and I already feel cold... dang, I'm too lazy to peel one. Maybe I'll slice the orange instead. I hope it does make me feel better...thanx

@Zoe - I always wait until I'm sure I'm really really am sick and really really need to take if before I do since I rather Not take some stupid medicine that's going to cause me more pain through side effects.

@Lombardy - I can take medicine, I just don't want to. My throat only closes up after taking a couple days of medicine, like antibiotics >.< I know food is larger, but medicine has this, taste, and this consciousness of what you're swallowing might cause you a lot of pain through side effects afterwards...

My brother is autistic, and if he drinks caffeinated drinks, then he calms down. So we always make sure to give him regular soda instead of diet soda.

I don't take drugs (as I like to call all medicine, be in prescription pills or street drugs) unless I absolutely have to. As in, I feel like my head is about to explode from a headache, or my stomach is about to rupture. And if I get to the point where I need to take drugs, then I try to go straight to bed, because that's how out of it I need to be in order to let myself be medicated.

Although, the other day I had to take a plane ride, and I get motion sickness. So I took so Tylenol, but it ended up that I didn't... erm, keep it down long enough to take effect. Might also have been the fact that it was cold and cough Tylenol, not anything for motion sickness. Oops.

I don't think I've ever taken medication just for a cold.

Nani 11-03-2007 08:34 PM

I take medicine when I feel like it's getting bad enough. It's my own personal decision. Now, as for your side effects...

I also get extreme side effects. Unfortunately you can get some shakes and jitters from coled meds. If it's getting really bad, talk to your doctor or try taking half doses. Even try switching brands.

Also remember, if you're not getting sleep then shakes and jitters and sweats may be due to nervous issues. Your body can't handle as much on low sleep. Take a day off, get some rest. Sleep all day. After all, your immune system does it's best work while you sleep.

Nissa 11-03-2007 08:34 PM

It's still a good 50-60 degree temp up here most days. I live in MN so it gets pretty cold. As for medicine, I tend to be pretty childish about it. If I like the taste, I'll take it as soon as I start having symptoms. If it's something I don't care for I'll wait until I feel like crap to take it.

I used to be against it, wouldn't take it for nothing. But I have kids now and the longer I'm sick the better their chances of getting sick. Toilet paper? Hell no. It chafes my nose bigtime. I get the really cheap stuff. If it were one of those fluffy pillow types of toilet paper I might. But I'm far to cheap to get that stuff.

And you should go to a doctor about those shakes...Doesn't sound normal at all to me. Drowsiness is the only side effect I've ever heard of from cold medicines.

Masquerade 11-03-2007 08:38 PM

My drug of choice is Advil, but whether I'll take it or not depends on the situation. I work in a kindergarten classroom, and if I feel a headache approaching while the kids are still around, I'll pop two of them as quickly as possible so the screaming and crying and whatnot don't aggravate it.

If I'm on my own, at home after work or a weekend or whatever, I'll only take them if I'm in so much pain that I can't watch television or read or anything because I'm too focused on my headache.

As for cold meds, I only take those if the symptoms are so bad that I'm considering calling in to work sick. I got a hell of a cold my first two weeks of kindergarten and I was drugging myself up every day so as not to use up my sick leave.

life in red and black 11-03-2007 08:49 PM

@Moonlight Silver - Yea, I always chose sleep over meds, but it's not always an option for me.

@Nani - I think it's from lack of sleep now... I'm pretty low on sleep and shakes come from nerves right? I'm not taking prescription cold meds by the way. It's over the counter.

@Nissa - I've never found any medicine I like the taste of >.< Yea, my nose is all dry and red now from the toilet paper T_T but that was the only paper I have around besides rough napkins...

@Masquerade - I always have cold meds in my backpack just in case - because I need to concentrate in school though I feel bad if anyone accidentally catches the cold from me... my parents don't believe in taking sick days... >.< I just make sure I don't touch anybody or anything and wash my hands frequently.

Clavietika Tres Ojos 11-03-2007 09:00 PM

@life in red and black, If those shakes don't stop I would highly recommend going to see the doctor. You could have had a reaction.

Me, I don't take that much medicine. I actually kind of avoid taking anything. If I get a cold or flu I try to fight it out by drinking lots of fluids and eating good hearty meals.
If I see that the cold isn't going away then I'll finally take something to help relieve the symptoms.
My view on cold medicines? They are definitely not made to cure anything...because a cure for the common cold does not exist. We take them to give us a little relief for a few hours but that's it.
Sometimes they even harm you more than help you.
(Which is why I avoid them.)

life in red and black 11-03-2007 09:11 PM

@Clavietika Tres Ojos - Hey everybody! My shakes finally stopped - but I still feel the shivers... *sigh* At least, without the shakes, I can go back to my homework... *not looking forward to it*

But the meds say it's going to wear off around now...it's almost four hours now. I wonder if that's why the shakes stop. I'm a bad patient... I'm not taking another dose of medicine until I feel my nose running and headaches again from the cold... >.<

Dang. I hope I don't have to take anymore...

Cardania 11-03-2007 11:18 PM

I usually always get side effects from medicines. I try to only take them if I need them to function on a daily basis. As far as taking cold medicines, I usually only take those if I have to go to work with a cold since it's easier to hide the symptoms that way. Though I find some tylenol can be enough to make me feel better. I hate decongestants because they make my head itch badly.

And yes, I have used toilet paper to blow my nose several times. Sometimes if there are no tissues available, you just have to. Sure it takes like half a roll to wipe all the gunk away, but it's better than nothing.

Sirec 11-03-2007 11:23 PM

I generally just don't take medicine at all, unless I get really sick and a doctor prescribes it. Or sometimes when I get a reaaaaaaaaaally bad headache like I do sometimes, I take some Advil or something.

mystic kiwi 11-03-2007 11:27 PM

I will only take medicine if I need it. I mean REALLY need it. I have to be pretty much dying to be convinced to take anything. I don’t like the idea of all those toxins in my system so that’s why I never take any medications. Plus, with some antibiotics, your body can build up a resistance to them.

Enniel 11-04-2007 06:01 AM

I break down when I can't sleep. If my cold is getting so bad I can't sleep I fold. I don't like meds for the same reason...don't like the side effects and in general, i dont like putting substances into my body

PixelBabii 11-04-2007 06:27 AM

I use to get sick a lot, but lately I haven't
been. I usually take medicine when I'm in pain
or I can't handle symptoms that I get from being
sick. I have taken cold medicines before and I
think that they do work, but I don't think that
they are all that affective. They taste horrible
too. I don't use toilet paper to blow my nose,
I prefer napkins. The only side effect that I have
gotten from taking cold medicine is drowsiness.
I tend to fall asleep shortly after taking the medication.
I wouldn't know if shaky hands are normal, I'm not a doctor.
Well, where I live lately it has been hot all the time. I doubt
that it will be getting colder around here anytime soon.

Teeth 11-04-2007 07:36 PM

Lawl..you're the opposite of me.
I LOVE medicine. Yum Yum Yum. Once I even faked being sick just to take some pills. O.o
I love vitamins, too. :3
Advil tastes yummy..Never had Tylonol..
What I REALLU like are thoe capsol-like pills..with all those beads in them..YUMMMM!!
I also like those jelly-yellow-clear ones..they're so..funny feeling. x3
Though I'd never like, go mental and eat a whole can, nor would I eat any medicine when I'm not in need of it..
I like all kinds of medicines! Whether it be a Capsole, Liquid (I even like Buckleys!), or a Needle. It all it so cool. @[email protected]

(P.S. I'm eating Liquerish (sp?) Twizlers right now..they taste like medicine <3)

Livia 11-04-2007 09:20 PM

The last time I thought that I needed a medicine I ended up on the hospital. But is just something that probably is not suppose to discus here...

But nop I'm not a good fan of medicine at all x.x
