Music: Is it your passion?

I play piano, flute, and I sing. I have been playing flute for 7 years, piano for about the same time but I'm not classicly trained. I play by ear and have been teaching myself to play with sheet music. I've always loved to sing. When I was younger I used to sing the titanic song in "opera" xD.

In sophomore year I started doing the school plays and through that I was learning how to sing with sheet music. I was going to join choir the next year but decided to try oit for Madrigal Choir, an honors class, just to see what level I was at and I ended up making it. Through junior year I felt insecure about my singing but I ended up making it into Western Districts and later on that year I made it into All States.

I am now a senior. Although my passion for flute is no longer, I still play it every once in a while. I love to sing and I also love playing the piano. I enter another reality when I sit down and play or when I sing. Its very calm and relazing. I've always loved music and I always will. Its my passion.

So, I was also wondering how many others share the same passion for music. Discusss different types of instruments you play, learning to play, or would like to play. Also discuss what/who inspires/influences you musicaly.

  • Music is a passion of mine, but not quite in the same way. As far as personal pursuits, I'm interested in writing, creative writing and foreign languages, so that's where I'm focusing my school time. But if playing music didn't require a lot of practice (practice is like studying, and I don't study. Besides, it takes me long enough to do reguilar homework >_>) - no, actually even if it did, just not in school - I would probably play cello, and bass guitar. I'd like to alway play guitar. I think I guess I should just suck it up and try to play the thing right-handed since it looks like that'll be easier to do anyway. Just don't want my left hand all sore for writing...

Anyway, generally my passion for music is in listening to it. Feeling the emotions of the artist, the fire that it lights in my mind, the effect that it can have on people... I'm a big fan of music that has a voice. Not just a physical voice, just lyrics, but an actual voice, and a good sound. I'm always listening to or thinking about some song, and just about anything in life can remind me of some other song, either its title or its melody. When I get money, the first and primarily the only thing I want to spend it on is a new CD, and I'd like a record player so that I wouldn't feel wasteful buying records as well. Even though most of the music I listen to is on my computer, analog is still the best way to collect it.

I play clasic piano, Can play rock music on my piano ( The final countdown- Europe) for example.
I love to sing aswell.
I listen to metal music, rock, and just songs i really like. Like, Oasis, Or in this case, Timberland- Apologize, i really like that song, but other songs i really dislike from them.

Mostly i listen to Kamelot.
I wish i could play the violin tough, i love the sound of it.

Nice. I love listening to music. I listen to all sorts of music. What sort of stuff do you write? Do you feel that music inspires you to write?

Awesome. I'm trying to learn this song by tool for my friend but to no avail. ^.^;; Its easier for me to hear a song a bunch of times and then repeat it on the piano or on another instrument. I've been trying on and off to learn guitar. I think guitar is cool but I just dont click with it. xD

  • Sometimes it does. Sometimes I write about music and its depth and the way it makes me feel. Mostly what I write is descriptive reflection on something or other, but I want to do fiction. Novels, short stories, etc. Definitely music affects the way I write, though.

Cool. I think writting is a really cool way to express yourself. I like writting but I'm not the best with it. I dont go by the rules and stuff with poetry or other things. I just sorta put pen to paper and release my thoughts. Others can do that and it just comes out awesome.

I have to go for now but I'll be back later.

  • That's what I do, as well. With music, I'm not so good at creating. It doesn't come quite as naturally, the way many are able to just pick up their instrument and improvise a beautiful tune, I'm not as experienced with creating it to be able to do that. I'd love to be able to play cello again, though. It's a beautiful instrument and I miss it.

I've always had a passion for music as far as I can remember. I started out playing hand percussion instruments in middle school, then took up vocal music my junior year of high school. Sometime near the end of my middle school years I wondered what it would be like to be the person actually creating the songs themselves, so I began to learn how to construct a song on my own.

I had no real theory training until I started college last year, and since then I've been honing my songwriting skills as well as getting more serious about learning piano. The instruments I currently have some sort of an ability to play are as follows:

-Percussion, since middle school (djembe, doumbek, bodhran and various others)

-Voice, since high school (first tenor)

-Piano, also since high school, taking lessons at the moment

-Violin and guitar, both this past year. I'm practicing when I have the time.

I compose as well, as I stated before. My musical style is a blend of symphonic, industrial and new age elements. If you're curious to hear then follow the link in my siggy. ^_^

I wouldn't say it was my passion, but I'm into all kinds of arts. I mostly stick to things like painting and drawing though instead of instruments.
One thing I do love though, is listening to music. I listen to all different kinds, from hip hop to clssical. Though I usually like to stick to rock, I have about every genre possible on my iPod.

Majinkoz 11-05-2007 09:45 PM

I would have to say that 'yes' music is definitely a passion of mine....it's just SO amazing. I've been playing the piano for about 11 years...but I stopped when I was 16 (I'm 19 now) but I still sometimes sit down and just play for fun...and Im saying that I stopped meaning stopped taking lessons.

And I also play the trumpet...and I still do that now, I started when I was in 7th grade...in fact I technically play 'professionally' haha...because a professional is considered someone that plays their music in public for money...and I play for the pep-band at my college and I get 35 dollars every time I play. <3

I think music was meant to be appart of my life...my mom plays guitar, my dad plays the trumpet, my sister plays the piano and drums...my little sister plays the piano and she will eventually play the saxophone...my cousins/aunts are all very musically inclined....I have cousins that play the trumpet, clarinet, trumpet again, and tuba (that's all I can think of) and I have an aunt who is a choir teacher...then my boyfriend is a music major...and he plays the trumpet, I think we were just supposed to be together lol...and music is DEFINITELY supposed to be part of my life...and I love it.

I don't sing, or write music. Im learning piano, but I enjoy listenign to music much more than anything else. I don't need to know what it takes to make it. I love keeping track of all of my favorite bands though. Who doesn't, who's a teen?

leasfy 11-05-2007 11:10 PM

Music is so totally the passion of mine in certain way. I mean, I don't play music but I totally love listening to my friends when they are playing guitars. I used to play keyboards but I lost an interest for the training. Most of my friends who play piano have started to play it at the age of 7-10 which is why now they are such a pro.
I admit I can be jealous or envy them when they start to show their skill. >.>
Jealousy is a crime for me but >.>
How can I not be jealous xD

Wake Up Call 11-06-2007 12:04 AM

My passion for music is probably borderline obsession (in a good way.) I've played the Clarinet for 4 Years now, which is pretty cool considering I can only play by ear and memory.

And to top it off, I always have my iPod on and running for sometimes hours at a time. Yeah, i'm a freak like that.

xD

Sirec 11-06-2007 12:07 AM

I took a guitar class in school two semesters ago, and the teacher said I was a natural at it, but after the class ended I got myself a guitar and I can't play crap and I don't even know where to start >.<
I've also done little things goofing off with various instruments like the piano and stuff and I suppose I could be decent at music stuff, but I dunno, I get frustrated too easily =x

  • To be honest, I thought that all teens loved music as much as I do, I thought it was normal but when I bring up songs stuck in my head or whatever, no one seems to be able to relate. It's surprising.

@Sirec: Same here @[email protected] I tried playing guitar based from watching like videos on Comcast on Demand, but I sucked at it... I should try again though. And like I said I wish I could do it lefty but... I guess I'lll have to do it righty...

I love music. Not obsessed love, not so much I'd go out of my way just to learn every intrument, study it, and listen to all different kinds, but I always have to have some kind of music going on in the background of my day - otherwise I feel alone, hollow and empty. :/
Or at least some sound, a TV or something..
I love music, it can totally sum up somebodys live, or just make them feel better in a momment of need. Music is so mysterious, I mean, where do we come up with such noises that explain so much about our feelings? We can express ourselves through this thing called music, through notes! But how? It's so strange, if you think about it...
I play Piano, Flute (But I suck at it) and used to play drums. I listen to lots of music, because I feel music is the expression of that persons feelings at the time they wrote it. Though, there are some genres I can't stand. For example, I can't stand Country music. Ew. Mindless Rap sort of bothers me, unless it has a story behind it- its of no intrest to me..
My greatest example would be when a singer writes a song about his/her girlfriend/boyfriend and its all happy and slutty and cute, where as the very next song they make is about how their loved one has left them and how much they regret past life events. Moods change constantly - so do our music. :3

I'm not very good at music. I have trouble keeping a beat, so most of my playing comes from memorization of a song.

I do play trumpet, though, which I'm slowly getting better at.

Listening to music is much more enjoyable for me, as I appreciate each instrument in the piece.

Re: Music: Is it your passion?

Since I was a kid, I've always wanted to play music instruments. Funny thing was, I used to dream of owning and playing every instrument there is. That's why I picked up the piano when I was in third grade, because, in theory, if you learn the piano, it'll be easier to learn other instruments.

For one year, third grade, my dad drove me to Maria's house, a piano teacher. She also taught a ballet classmate of mine.

Then, after that year, my parent worked a lot so we hired a piano teacher to come make home visits to teach me, and now, my lil sister too, for two years.

Then we moved after that and I only played the piano whenever I feel the urging.

For example, recently, I hung out at the band room during lunch a couple times. I couldn't help but envy all of them playing the keyboards there... when I got home, I went straight to the computer to print off the piano score and play again.

I LOVE piano music, and a lot of instrumentals, just not exactly 'classical'. For example, on a The Used CD, Maybe Memories, they had Bert playing the piano on a solely music song, "Sometimes I just Go for it". It was beautiful.

I'd like to learn the guitar and harmonica because those instruments make great music and can be carried, unlike my piano >.<

I usually start playing when I hear an emotional piece. I haven't learned how to "play by ear" yet... My teachers say I have a great sense of beat, but not agile enough of fingers...

I play cello, started as part of the required music program of my school in fourth grade. Now I'm in private lessons. . .

I am currently enjoying Squire's Bouree for cello. . .

I have been working pretty hard, but I'm only about an intermediate player . . . I love it, though!!!! CELLO <333[/i]

I wish I was one of those musical people. :'D
I can't play anything, nor am I motivated to learn.

But I do love music. :]

the_forgotten_apology 11-06-2007 05:07 AM

music is totally my passion but i don't like want to be a big name superstar sounds to complicated and well yea.... I mean if i was given a chance sure i would take it. but i wouldn't bet all i had for a career it's too risky and i'm not lucky. but really i love music i mean if you knew me in real life you would know i listen to japanese songs all during classes (and somehow i'm passing STILL). And I sing in the shower even if someone's at my house I don't care let them hear! But when i get out of the shower and sing is different because i have horrible stage fright(adds on to why don't want to be famous). But i've showed my friends i can sing (over the phone). also too i have played flute but it was too confusing because i have small hands so hard to reach buttons. But i really want to learn to play piano i love the way the sound it makes! It makes me want to sing and.. well sing!
lol I wonder how bored you guys are! and how much money i got off this post!!

inseCuREly 11-06-2007 05:14 AM

Oh yes, I love music a lot. It's so important to me; I couldn't go without it, I don't think. I love to sing so much... I started taking singing classes last year, and this year I started up a music theatre class with the same teacher. It's so much fun. I love the people there, and it's really helping me get over my shyness with people. I'm not as quiet anymore, and I'm allowing myself to be myself more around people I don't know, as well. :3

Aside from that, I listen to music constantly; if I don't have some on, it feels awkward. Aside from books, I cry more easily to songs than I do to movies. Music also inspires me a lot - it affects my moods, and helps me write a lot of the time. It's great. <3

I also used to play the flute, but I stopped when I got into highschool 'cause I wanted to take art instead. I kind of want to learn to play the guitar though; mom has one, but found it too hard to learn from a book, and never got an actual instructor. Maybe I should ask her where she put it, and maybe I could try. :3

Inochi Jigoku 11-06-2007 11:03 PM

Cool. Theres a lot of musical people here and also people involved with other arts.

Wow, you sound like me. lol. For me guitar is hard. I dont really flow as well with it, which is why I think I keep starting and stopping when I try to learn it.
