As much as I've put in to getting my teaching degree if an opportunity came along to have a steady well paying game industry job, I would drop teaching and go with it (even though I only have a semester left until I graduate - lolz... irresponsible!!)

TrueLight 12-17-2007 06:15 PM

At least if the game industry slowed down, you could teach. It's good to have more than one skill.

Navi 12-17-2007 07:10 PM

True, true. And as many people have mentioned to me before - I could work on commissions/contracts around a teaching schedule (especially summers). So there's always that option.

TrueLight 12-17-2007 07:21 PM

Exactly especially since you are so good at it and it's obviously something you enjoy.

Melody 12-17-2007 07:30 PM

Exactly XD do both <3 I can only assume that you perused a teaching career because you enjoy doing it. and school only takes up 7 or 8 hours a day. that still leaves plenty of leisure time to work on contract stuff for the other job. but then that does take up a lot of personal time... meh? I guess it all depends on how much you like working XD

what are you teaching?

Navi 12-17-2007 07:47 PM

I would teach art somewhere on the K-12 level. ^^

Melody 12-17-2007 07:51 PM

I think teaching it on the K-5 level would irritate you some. <3 I would go for 6-12 for art since before then getting them into a creative mind set and coloring in the lines seems to be difficult XD
Though I will admit that it is fun to give kura crayons and blank paper and seeing how she draws things is pretty entertaining. She drew me a cat once that looked like a spider with extra legs. :P It was still cute though. ^^;;

Navi 12-17-2007 07:54 PM

I taught K-5 this semester (Sept - Dec) and you're right - I don't think it's for me. Granted... it was fun and interesting to see their thought process and what they could come up with. And some kids really were phenomenal artists already. But I am so excited to do high school next semester.

roocee 12-17-2007 07:56 PM

I bet you are. You would be an outstanding teacher.

Melody 12-17-2007 08:01 PM

I think most of K-5 is just getting htem used to the idea of drawing still though. </3 Once you get into the higher grades there should be a little bit more for you to do. Help them along with technique since their ideas should be vivid enough in their minds on what they are doing instead of this color is pretty, it goes here! though, that could just be kura. and she isn't exactly kindergarten age yet :P but still XD
back in high school art was my favorite class. <3 The teacher was awesome and she just kinda let us work on the stuff she didn't hover and tell us NOT to be creative like my ceramics teacher did. He had a problem with kids though. :P

Navi 12-17-2007 08:06 PM

Thanks Roo <333

Tell you not to be creative? Mel that sounds awful! DX I would never tell kids not to be creative. I'm afraid of having a hovering problem, but that's the way my mentor teacher was in elementary and I know my high school mentor teacher DOESN'T hover, so I'll see a different side/way to teach.

Melody 12-17-2007 08:10 PM

he was horrible. I took the class for the fine art requirement and that was pretty much it. The sad part was that I was really good at it. He just didn't like my ideas because they weren't textbook things. :/ So once I got into the advanced class me and the other 3 students in there just spent the time playing on the potters wheels, which are surprisingly hard to use. I much prefer just doing things by hand D: but yes, as far as being an art teacher he was really bad. art is about creativity and he seemed to have forgotten that at some point. >.<
I think some students need a teacher that hovers to gain their full potential and bounce ideas off of. others do better on their own. So it would really depend on your students. <3

roocee 12-17-2007 08:13 PM

I didn't care for my art classes. My elementary teacher just didn't seem to care if we did anything or not. Then the one I had in high school she seems to pay more attention to those that were the popular kids of the class and those of us who wern't popular she never helped.

Melody 12-17-2007 08:16 PM

^^;; my high school art teacher liked me XD I was one of 4 students that actually liked the class and took it seriously. everyone else just kinda wasted her time and acted up.

Navi 12-17-2007 09:03 PM

I'm kind of the same, Roo. I don't remember even having art in elementary school. But in high school the teacher only paid attention to people that he liked/he liked their work. I happened to be one of those students, but I still didn't like the fact that he treated others differently. I hope to be different than that - but who knows how the job can wear on you after 15-20 years. D; He was scary too - I saw him throw a stool across the room once. =(

roocee 12-17-2007 09:14 PM

That's pretty much how all the teachers in my school were except for my business classes. Of course I excelled there. I didn't excel at art as I didn't draw well but maybe if the teacher would have shown other students the same respect, maybe we would have been better, I don't know.

Snowberry 12-17-2007 09:45 PM

I didn't really have an art teacher in middle school. When it came to high school, I was forbidden to take art classes. ^.^;; strict parentals, I'm self taught. But anyways I took art appreciation as a requirement. The teacher was passionate about it, but the students were like eh, whatever. I loved the mini projects we got to do. Egyptian hieroglyphics, and I remember pressing a drawing of sailor saturn I made into some kind of metal... I want to take a real art class sometime. Good luck with teaching Navi, and 6-12 definitely sounds better. :3

Melody 12-17-2007 10:53 PM

I love mini projects in art classes <3 they are so much fun to do. I always wanted to make a stamp thing. But never got a chance. eventually I would like to though. you should definitely take an art class at some point Snow <3 I only had one year in high school and one semester in College. I mainly learned techniques and how to do textures. It was pretty cool.

Nephila 12-17-2007 11:01 PM

That sounds like an awesome job! How much schooling did it take to become an art teacher?

Navi 12-17-2007 11:09 PM

I'm on my 6th year, but I'm only 1/2 time this year and only student teaching. It can be done in 5 years but it's hell. Plus I took some classes that weren't required, but I just wanted to have them. =3

Nephila 12-17-2007 11:18 PM

Hehe cool. Ya why not learn as much as you can while you can. I m like that too. I would love to learn more languages and stuff like that too.

Melody 12-17-2007 11:25 PM

Navi- I just looked through your DA, I love so many of your pieces! <3

Navi 12-17-2007 11:26 PM

Japanese was one of those classes I didn't need but took anyway (for a whole year whoops ^^;;; )

Thank you Mel! <333

Melody 12-17-2007 11:28 PM

as long as you enjoyed the class, that is what matters.
Scott came in while I was looking at them XD He liked the still life with the grapes and the one with the fishing lures <3 (I believe that is what they were anyway XD)

Navi 12-17-2007 11:36 PM

Yep, they're fishing lures! My professor had brought in his tackle box and said, "Here, make a still life with what's in here. You can use anything you want." It was funny, and weird, and great. Hehe.
