S0 h0w doe5 th1s f33l?

Excuse the leet speak in the title, I need something attention grabbing, and relevant to the topic.

So I was looking at lolcats today, and browsing Mene at the same time, when I remembered that Mene makes new users take a quiz before they are allowed to post/vote in forums. And one of the questions had something to do with leet speak, or just computer illiteracy in general. And you can naturally assume that anyone who posts here passed the test, right? Yet even as I browse Menewsha, I still notice people who type using "sry, u, r, y, and any1" and I wonder, "Are these people aware that by their typing, they manage to annoy quite a few people in the internet?" I mean, there are MANY signs around that poke fun at grammar and illiteracy, yet some people continue to type in such a fashion. I myself am guilty of using computer acronyms every once in a while, like "lol, k, or wtf" but at least I realize it, and realize that I am susceptible to attack from grammar nazis.

I'm not attacking anyone for using acronyms, but do you take notice of the fact that you post in such a way? Do you notice that there are quite a few people who are dissatisfied with such typing? And do you find it funny to type in such a way? Or are you just too lazy?

Discuss.

kumi 11-27-2007 11:28 PM

oops im guilty of that i must confess i dont really relize it when im on the computer its just a habit ive acctually caught myself doing it in school work too its a horrible habit :(

Risque 11-27-2007 11:29 PM

It's alright, I typed like that a few years ago, got multiple red marks on my paper for using "R." But that's when I stopped, I realized how much neater my posts became when I started typing "correctly." xD

b e y o n d 11-27-2007 11:34 PM

  • I've never typed like that, just because my brain seems to find it harder to remember those abbreviations than to spell the word correctly. So really, even though some people say that when you type things like "sry" you're being lazy, it's lazier for me to type like this. X'D

It annoys me a little bit when I see people type like that, but I don't generally complain unless I can't read it. And even then, I'd keep my complaints in my head.

Bunai 11-27-2007 11:35 PM

if someone has a style they use for the internet as oppose to one they use off-line. than that is their personal way of typing.

making fun of it won't change it. if you don't understand their post, just ignore it.

nearly everyone uses net acronyms that are widely known.

Caeluma 11-27-2007 11:38 PM

I don't do it but just because I get more gold this way

C 11-27-2007 11:38 PM

Yeah, I find it really annoying. Especially if the person is constantly typing like that. I'm not saying that sometimes I don't say "lol", but at least I know not to use it constantly. I can imagine how embarassing it must be to accidently right "R, y, u", etc, on a test or any kind of school work. XD

Risque 11-27-2007 11:40 PM

Hells yeah, lazy people for the win. :]

I generally keep my discontent in my head, since things like that aren't worth raising hell over.

XDD

I say "lol" sometimes, but that's it. I do find it annoying, but I don't comment. For all I know, the person writing the topic, or in the topic, is from a non-english speaking country.

Amo_Angelus 11-27-2007 11:50 PM

Angel often wonders this herself and then whilst she's pondering the mysteries she'll type "lol! WTF was that guy thinking? >_<" And go >_< at her own incompetence.

I think there's a time and place for it though. lol and wtf and such should only ever be used in informal conversation and in context. Never in formal conversation.

The only place typing like a retard "r u k" is ever acceptable is when you only have one text message left on your phone and are running out of room.

But that doesn't really answer as to why it's used on here...

Aeisha 11-27-2007 11:56 PM

I haven't used most abbreviations in a long time though sometimes if I am in a hurry I still use the likes of g2g or brb though most of the others I no longer used since I started catching myself using it on a year 10 English exam somehow I don't think I would have gotten a very good mark if there where those sorts of abominations of the English language scattered throughout it.
(Plus it is very difficult to have a wide and imaginative vocabulary when you are using l33t speak)

Aurora 11-27-2007 11:56 PM

Well, I usually like to type out my words and use grammar properly..but I do say things like lol and ROFL..and faces..^^

` Plastic Rainbows 11-28-2007 12:08 AM

If I do post like that I am well aware of it. It's mostly srsly, ttly, lol, wtf, wth, ect. Not my whole sentences because that's just lame.
What I find funny is that there are some words that people type can be really longer than the word actually is. I thought short handing everything was to make it so there was less letters... I guess I was wrong.

Thunder 11-28-2007 12:25 AM

I use 'lol' and 'wtf/wth' sometimes. Every once in a while, I will shorten other words, but that's usually only if I'm in a hurry or I'm holding something and only have one hand to type with. As for using 'lol,' I use it because it just sounds nicer than 'Haha.' Maybe it's just me, but typing 'haha' just makes you sound sarcastic or mean when you're not trying to be. Sounds more like you're laughing at someone, instead of laughing at what they said.

I think a lot of people think it's cool to type like that. I mean, all their friends do it, right? xD Not to mention that it is a faster way to type. And then I'm sure there are some who do it just to attract grammar nazis so they can argue about it. Kind of like trolls, some just want to tick people off.

nike13 11-28-2007 12:25 AM

I've only really written with chat speak when saying something like be right back (those puppy has to go outside emergencies). In forums I try to type correctly just cause that's what makes sense to me.

Dystopia 11-28-2007 12:33 AM

The only sort of chatspeech I excuse is 'Lol' and 'WTF' and stuff like that, which I ironically find myself saying in verbal conversations.

But if you start thinking that numbers are letters... Well, ask my friends. >.>; I'm a grammer nazi when it comes to AIM.

butterscotch 11-28-2007 12:41 AM

I always type nicely on forums but in ims... it's "y r u lol" galoreee.

I don't know, I think some people overreact a bit to chatspeak - I personally don't care HOW anyone types as long as I can read it. :]

ToriKat 11-28-2007 12:51 AM

  • I'll use those sparingly when I am chatting. I limit myself to LOL, ROFL, OMG, JK, and WTF. Because when my friends and I are talking, they seem appropriate at certain times as a quick response. More often than not, I'll end up actually typing "*laughs*," "oh my god...," "juuust kidding!," or "WHAT THE?"

I avoid them at all costs on forums. I cringe when I see them...why should I do them myself?

Azelf_Rampardos 11-28-2007 01:00 AM

The only l33t speaking that I probably do is lol, jk (once) and homg/omg XD I usually like to type stuff out cause like someone also said in the thread, it helps you get more gold anwyays! >_<

Eserel 11-28-2007 01:06 AM

Grammar nazi.
I mean.
I use leet speak,
But only when I am in the spammy and bored mood.
And its not true leet,
Its making fun of them.
And attempting to sound out the words at the same time.
Like = lyk
you = yew
lol = lawl
Don't = dun
But I do use chatspeak when I have to go somewhere [aka BRB, BBL, G2G <- only occasionally on g2g ]

[L]ove[H]ate 11-28-2007 01:10 AM

I personally think using lol and lmao are find. It's just my opinion. Although it's chat speak, who's acutally going to say laugh out loud. lol is universal sign for someone laughing...if your catching my drift.

Britti 11-28-2007 01:37 AM

A little off topic before I can move on, but wow, I've never dreamed of using any sort of chatspeak in a formal setting, save for one occasion. (As a senior, my English teacher gave the class busy work in the form of a paragraph over your childhood hero while she worked on Yearbook. I wrote about Sailor Moon and was being very sarcastic, so I threw an 'lol' into the middle of it. ... I received a perfect score, so I know it was just busy work. XD)

But back on topic, I'll use 'wtf,' 'lol,' 'brb,' and like ` Plastic Rainbows, I'll remove the vowels from words when I'm feeling silly, but even then, I only use such speak in text messages and the online game Audition, both of which has a character limit. Also, I'm known to use it in the out-of-character chatroom of the roleplay game I'm in with my three closest friends.

Despite all that, I don't think it's really very silly or annoying until it gets excessive. (I'm more likely to say something if you're abusing emoticons more-so than chatspeak...) Some people are just lazy or what have you. I'm not, but who am I to judge other people?

(Also, a little off topic again but it's still very relevant: In New Zealand, if it's obvious that you have a clear understanding of the material you're writing on, for a paper, you're allowed to use SMS speech. That blows my mind entirely. It's one thing to be lazy, but for schools to allow students... That's insane.)

Ithir 11-28-2007 01:53 AM

I haven't typed in a chat speaky manner in years.
And it's odd, even if I'm texting someone and consider shortening a word, most of the time I just can't bear to do it >< (Like you to u)
But I do a bit in IM, just because it's quick if I'm in a hurry.

And I hate it when I can't read someone's post.

Britti~ What's SMS?

Oh, sorry, it literally means "Short Message Service." In other words, text messages. So SMS speech = chatspeak basically.

And, even in text messages, I usually won't shorten you to u. Mainly I just throw punctuation and capitalization out the door but sometimes if I really have to, I will.

And if I can't read a post, I skip it completely. ^_~

Ithir 11-28-2007 02:08 AM

Ah.
That's really odd that they allow it. It's a bad habit.
