Getting Drunk

I just got back from a visit to my campus bar. Today was my last day of classes and I've got a break from now til Monday before my finals start so I had a beer. I am over 21 (legal drinking limit here) and I was with my boyfriend and his friends, but I honestly don't like beer. I drank it because a) my boyfriend bought it for me b) they only server beer or wine at the bar and c) it would have been a waste if I didn't finish it. So tonight, I finished my first ever full beer and the sad part is, I'm buzzed. Not completely drunk (have never been fully drunk) but enough where things are a little off for me.

Since I was 16 I was allowed to have a sip of wine during family occasions. Only one sip or taste because I seemed mature enough to not go out and get myself plastered. I never liked the idea of getting completely wasted either, I not a complete control freak (especially when I'm with my boyfriend because I trust him completely) but I don't like the idea of losing control of my senses when in a public place with a group of people. Sure, if I'm alone with my boyfriend or if I'm with a group that I know I can completely trust, I see no problems with having more than my 1 or 2 glasses but it would take a lot for me to do that. Plus, I know I'm pretty light-weight since I'm buzzed after 1 beer so I refuse to have more than 1 when with people I don't know (like tonight, it was my first night out with these friends of his).

So now I'm wondering, who here has drunk themselves drunk? Who has drunk alcohol before they were legally allowed to? Do you like getting drunk or detest the mere concept of it?

Also (since its cropped up in discussion), if you do drink, what's your favorite kind of drink? Do you like your liquor straight or mixed?

I've actually never gotten drunk....I'm in college and I've had MANY opportunities to do so but I'm still underage (19) and I think...you know, I rather just wait instead of risking the chance of getting caught, no matter how slim they are, so I say that's good for you...even though you are 21 you don't go out and get plastered like I know some of my friends who are 21 and younger do...

But I would be a light weight too! I know it...but at the same time I kind of think that the more you build up your tolerance for alcohol the more you will be able to have. I'm about 120lbs and my mom is very similar to me, tall and thin, but let me tell you! She can pack it away! lol.

And I also agree with you about the getting drunk with people that you know/don't know. I will NEVER get drunk if I'm say out at a party with people that I don't know....even if I'm with one person that I do know. If I ever decided to have a few drink and think there could be a chance that I'll get drunk I will be with the people that I completely trust like my boyfriend and/or some close friends.

I actually admire you for not drinking so much, especially at your age. So many people I know...that's like ALL THEY DO. So it makes me want to wait even more until I'm 21. And sure I have had a sip or something like wine...but my dad let me have it...and it was one sip, once. :0

I'm glad to see someone else in college who doesn't go out to party the night away. Never did that when I was an undergrad and have no intentions now. Course, there's a lot fewer parties where I go to lecture but still, opportunities are everywhere when you're in college. I admire you for holding back because it isn't easy to against the 'norm'.

I do hear from my best friend (who is not 21 yet) about her getting drunk at parties and what not and I just wonder why she would do that. It seems like a bit of a waste, partly because she could get caught, expelled and partly because bad things could happen to her like someone taking advantage of her while she's in that state. I told her that I will only go drinking with her once she turns 21, simply because I am not going to be held responsible for her actions (its a felony if she gets caught and I'm there).

Besides I have figured out that when I do have something to drink, I act a bit slutty. I'll either become depressing or start flirting and I definitely don't want that latter part to come out. I did have drinks with one of my male friends once and he said I seemed like a completely different person, like there were literally two of me and he had unlocked this evil twin side. I just told him that that was the other me that I don't let out and that I am, after all, a Gemini ^^; He's tried to get me to drink with him again after that but to no success. Its not that I don't trust him (because I do, he's one of my best friends), its just that I don't trust how I'll come across or what secrets I'll tell.

I'm thirteen...and I know this sounds corny......or whatever.....but I don't think I'll ever get drunk....or take any drugs as well as smoke for that matter.

I guess it was how I grew up. It smells funny as well as I make myself believe it tastes nasty as well. A couple times a year my father goes out with friends. He doesn't get drunk....but I can always smell the beer from his breath. If you were wondering, he gets home at nine to ten. I loathe the smell I guess.

I don't really like wine, but I guess I have to drink it when I get older. The whole go to a fancy restaurant with my husband or whatever. I do drink wine on weekends though. xDD I altar serve and drink "Christ's blood". Eww. It burnssss master.

Really. It does. My. throat. burns. .-.

I really don't get why especially underaged children like me think it's so cool to drink, smoke, or take drugs. I go to private school, and last year, some guy in my class got banned for bringing drugs. Then at my old school, [left in fifth grade] another guy was banned for bringing vodka to schoo about the same time.

What's so good about vodka?

Is it because it's the "strongest" type?

My mother was told by a friend that it tastes like rubbing alcohol. [Wait--she drinks rubbing alcohol?!!!]

And my fgather said that as well.

-----

I used the term, "whatever" too much. xDD

I think my parents would have grounded me for life if I tried alcohol at 13, seriously. I remember being 3 or 4 and trying a bit of my dad's beer because it was what my dad drank (one or two every so often), I spat that out instantly ><

Never got curious about drugs or smoking, dad smokes and the smell makes me sick to my stomach and the appeal of a drug high is non-existent. I turned down cigarettes when I was in junior high from one of my best friends, I didn't even know she smoked until she offered me some after school (explained a lot about why my mom didn't want me hanging out with her after school). My family has been pretty open about things like that though, as long as I'm of legal age to smoke or drink and I don't hide it from them, its OK because its my choice.

And you don't have to have wine with your special someone later on if you don't want any. You can ask for champagne (bubbly, not burning) or try a fruity type of wine (usually what I go for, its sweet and doesn't burn, usually the waiter will recommend something if you ask for a sweet one). Heck, you could just decide to forgo alcohol altogether. Its really no big deal, some people don't like it, some people can't drink it (for health reasons, grandfather couldn't because he was diabetic) and some aren't allowed to (past alcoholics usually stay clear of anything like alcohol). It is all up to you and your tastes. Maybe your church uses a really harsh wine so no one is tempted to try any before they can ^^

Amo_Angelus 12-07-2007 01:16 AM

Here you're allowed to have a glass of wine with a meal and consume alcohol under your parents roof from the age of 13. You need parental supervision though and only 1 or 2 units. So Angel has been drinking since 13.

Now Angel is legal sometimes she'll go out just to get slaughtered (New years anyone?) But if Angel isn't meaning to get drunk she can consume alcohol and stop when she's had enough.

Angel will not drink something she doesn't like unless she has killed her tastebubs first (Yep when Angel is hammered). Angel sees no point in drinking something she dislikes. And yes, angel has poured black rum down the sink before because it's vile. And that's more expensive than a pint and it was bought by her friend too ^_^ .

Smellerbee 12-07-2007 01:27 AM

Edit.

nike13 12-07-2007 01:32 AM

@Angel
Not the rum! (nike likes rum very much)

I've never been out for New Years Eve honestly. I think that would be one night I wouldn't feel completely out of place to put back a few with my boyfriend when in a group. Course, neither of us have been to a 'real' New Years party so maybe things would be different if I actually went. My New Years usually consists of staying at my house or going to my boyfriend's, having a glass or two of champagne and watching one of those New Year's Marathons on TV >_> Sad yes, but in both places we are with our respective families so anything else would not happen. My only requirement for New Years, is that I get to kiss my boyfriend first for good luck in the new year ^__^

@c0th
Sounds more like the normal break than anything else though. There were always people talking about going somewhere for break, and getting so drunk that they wouldn't remember anything that happened there (the 'norm' for spring break apparently). Mexico is pretty popular as well as anything with a beach. I could never imagine going with a group of my friends and acting like that though, even if I was just with my girl friends (since a lot of my friends from college are guys) it would be awkward doing that.

Beer does smell bad, also has an aftertaste that I'm still trying to get rid of.

Sad to say though, the pressure to drink will get more pronounced in college (well, depending on where you're going). Lucky for me our campus was a 'dry' campus while I was underage so alcohol was not allowed. That really cut back on the few parties that do happen at a nerd school.

Mozzetti 12-07-2007 01:34 AM

I love drinking... Hahaha. That sounds bad. Anyways, it's kind of sad how much I have to take before I even get a buzz... XDD ~ In beer terms, it's at least 4 most times 5. However, once I am legally allowed to drink, I'll probably do it less.. P:

Smellerbee 12-07-2007 01:34 AM

Edit.

nike13 12-07-2007 01:37 AM

@Mozzetti
How long until you're legally permitted to drink? And why would you drink less after you can legally do it? Do you just drink because you aren't allowed to? Sorry with all the questions, it just doesn't seem like drinking underage is worth the trouble you could get into.

@c0th
Same rules applied here until a year ago ^^ Actually, if its outside the campus bar, you get expelled even now (unless its your dorm room and you and your room mate are 21+).

*hands Nike13 the rum*
I like white rum, but not black.

I'm celebrating new years at my parents house. HOUSE PARTY!!!

snowdrop 12-07-2007 01:40 AM

Well i can't say iv been drunk but i also can't say i haven't had a few before here and there. My boyfriend and his friends on the other hand are all huge drinkers. It's unbelievable how much they can consume in an hour, from what i hear it's alot and knowing them it's the truth >.<;; of course at my age we aren't allowed to drink alcohol, but if you think about it almost half of the highschool population get's drunk on fri and weekend nights. Most of the time it's the parent's that supply the beer and keep watch of the kids, slightly awkward.
Sometimes i slip a thought of maybe getting drunk one night just to see what it's like? Just I'm not sure what i would be like, I'm pretty sure i would be very loud and knowing me say things i shouldn't. I heard that when you're drunk you tell the truth? Not sure if that's lie or not if so then everyone i know is screwed! Haha i feel bad for the first person to make me mad? Normally i would keep my little thoughts to myself but if what they say is true about people being honest and all that.... Well... Like i said sucks for them, not that i am mean or anything O.O' just saying..
Another thing is i wont drink with people I'm not close to especially guys. Not offense but you never know what could happen, iv heard to many stories to just go out and get slammed one night with people i go to school with but hardly associate with! Nahh i rather be with my girl-friends chilling or my boyfriend and a few of his friends that i know, speaking of people i don't know. Tomarrow my little boyfriend is making me go to a dang party! I'm thinking "are you joking? i dont know anyone that go's to you're school cam!" My cousin went their and she might go with me, but still i have two things that could happen.
A: the people i dont know will love me and we will become friends
or
B: they could be complete jerks and hate my guts
I much rather hope for A but with my luck it will be B. -.-;
Ugh. decisions decisions. Sorry if i rambled haha my bad! ^.^

Mozzetti 12-07-2007 01:46 AM

I don't drink only because I'm not allowed too, but I think that's just part of the fun part, you know..

As for drinking less once I am legal to, I think it's just a part of the "not being legal" thing. Like I said, not being allowed is just part of the fun... I'll grow up eventually.. Maybe. XDD

And, I'm not legal for another 5 years. O:

On a last note, I am able to control myself... XDD ~ I have my boundaries and I know when to stop. I'm a responsible drinker!

Motion 12-07-2007 01:48 AM

I like to drink beer and any alocoholic drinks. I'm 16 and I've been doing it since age 14. Here in Puerto Rico almost all the bars, pubs and disco's let you enter and drink without ID. Lucky us. :3

I agree haha. I'm pretty sure everyone will get bored of drinking once we are allowed to. After a while it will be like "Wow. This isn't fun anymore" maybe it's because we do what we arn't supposed to and don't what we are? Ah just confused myself :s

Majinkoz 12-07-2007 01:52 AM

Moz, you're only 16....*shock* wow...I did not know that. Hmm...I feel old now....wow.

But thank you nike...I'm glad someone recognizes my self control! lol...I bet my parents, especially my mom thinks that I drink...when I really don't. I've been offered is MANY times...but I always just say no thank you, and at least with me people do not judge you or say things like, 'Why!? Are you afraid.' or shit like that...and even so, I am not someone who caves under peer pressure.

nike13 12-07-2007 01:55 AM

@Angel
*hugs rum bottle*
I'm the reverse, I like black rum more than white (although I will drink white if I'm out of black, mom has white at home for some unknown reason).

This year will also be a house party, my house specifically. I can almost guarantee that someone in my house will be completely blitzed before the night is over this year. It'll be the first New Years without my grandfather and my grandmother will (of course) be with us. I think my mom and I both plan on spiking grandma's coffee or else she will be very mean and bitter through-out the night.

@snowdrop
I've found that everyone reacts to being drunk differently. Some people are unnaturally honest, some are complete flirts, some are angry/depressed, and some just seem to become comatose. I was curious too on how I would be but when I found out that I get more flirtatious after a drink or two I try to not drink more than what I can handle because I don't want someone taking advantage of me. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people I was in high school with drank, I know a lot of the people I was in college with drank before they were supposed to. I did feel a little left out but the consequences never made getting drunk or even drinking underage seem like it was worth the risk.

@Mozzetti
5 years? How are you getting the booze then?

I can see the appeal of doing something you aren't supposed to, there's always a rush for that but what does happen if you get caught? At least on the school front I would have been expelled if on school grounds, suspended if off of it. Really too much riding on a simple buzz for me to enjoy it.

@Majinkoz
Yeah, people would say that and call me boring, a wimp, etc but I was always doing better than them in school so it didn't bother me one bit ^^ Especially being one of the few girls on campus, getting drunk just never sounded like a good idea, especially before I realized what I was like after a drink.

snowdrop 12-07-2007 01:56 AM

Im 16 to haha. They shouldn't pick on you! Pure pressure.. It's horrible. Be above the influence haha! Do you remember those commercials? I haven't seen them on in a while?

Amo_Angelus 12-07-2007 01:58 AM

hehe ok here's the deal... *gives Nike13 her black rum and steals nike13's white rum* neh?

Stained Sunday 12-07-2007 01:58 AM

They only served beer and wine? o,o Strange. I'm 17 and like you, am allowed sips of alcohol once in a while. I have access to it at work (super illegal, lololo) but of course as I don't want to be fired, never take any. XD

I don't know really what i'd be like, i'm just taking a random guess of being really wild and loud. True the punishment you can get is pretty bad, what i'm more worried about is the 'what if this happens' what if..I decide to let a drunk friend drive me home or something so i wont be caught past curfew. It's not like i can just call my parent's and say "oh yeah by the way mom/dad i am hammerd come get me please?" I guess it's hard these days for parent's to understand.
Ah i know! Some kids have been drinking since 12 or 13! I remember just getting little sips from my parent's but actually drinking?? Wow.

@c0th
Yeah, my depressing side wasn't my best feature but it was honest >_> I was a bit surprised with what I ended up saying, wound up denying one or two things though just because I wasn't ready to accept them myself.

Livia 12-07-2007 02:17 AM

HHmm.. I drank alcohol when I didn't had enough age to do so. But I didn't got drunk. But on the last summer I got drunk twice... I'm 18 by the way <.<.

The first one was because I wanted to put myself in coma. I wasn't having a good life on that time... And that seemed the only good thing to do.. To put me in coma. I almost got that but my friends didn't let me... I really felt my body started to slowly to stop working. Just my brain trying to stay awake. Kind of funny the feeling but not good for anyone to have it u.u'... And the second one was because I was frustrated. Got drunk by accident the second one... The other ones I wasn't exactly drunk but all I know is that I was feeling to happy to my own good. xD I felt sometimes things spinning around and me laughing with my almost drunk friends as well xD

I got addicted once to alcohol ( I still might be I just drink now. :'D ) but my boyfriend made me promise to not drink like crazy alcohol only of he was around for him to stop me in time. xD I just don't notice... I drink... I have the money... I just drink it ._.
