It's "portions" not "proportions."

So, the other day I was sitting in a resteraunt and my mother-in-law chipped in her opinion that they served much smaller proportions.

What's truly funny about this is my sister-in-law and I are always catching my mother-in-laws fumbles with words. She once called YouTube, MyTube. She also adds "re" to some words that don't need it. Like "rewarned" and such. It's really funny. Other times she just uses the wrong word.

And my husband picked up her "speaking" abilities. He uses the wrong word a lot to, or randomly throws in a "big" word to sound smart but it's not even being used correctly.

Discuss:
Do you have anyone in your family that does that?
Have you ever caught yourself using the wrong word and felt really embarrased?
Do you ever find yourself correcting complete strangers?

Berginyon 12-16-2007 08:24 PM

Redundancy is something I am guilty of being redundant ^^

Besides that, I've been guilty of using big words without being one-hundred percent certain of their meaning before... and there are times when I find words I like in writing, but butcher the pronunciation when I attempt to use em.

What can I say? I'm a hack ^^

George Carlin had it pegged when he made fun of the term 'hot water heater', on a slightly related note;

Quote:

"I said, I'd like to buy a hot water heater."
"Well what the hell for? Hot water doesn't need to be heated! I think you're looking for a COLD water heater! ... Or maybe a hot water cooler?"
[/quote]

When talking, I'm extremely guilt of mixing my words. As in, I'll mean to say one thing, like except for expect, and I don't even realize I've said it until someone points it out to me. It's not that I don't understand or anything; I just get so excited that it comes out funny.

I'll even omit words, like "am" or "are." I think it's because I'm focusing so much on my foreign language studies than English. XD;

I also have a pronunciation problem too. o.o; But I usually understand more than not; but I'll admit I have tried to sound like a smartie pants but just ended up as a smart ass.

fuyumi_saito 12-16-2007 08:32 PM

No..Well..I do mess up sometimes XD so probably me.. That's fine though..

I don't correct strangers..ever..Never talk to strangers..*Is 18 and still believes that*

Estrella 12-16-2007 08:34 PM

Berginyon: I'm the same way when it comes to reading a book. xD I get really cocky because I know what they mean and then I go to use it and I pronounce it entirely wrong.

fuyumi_saito: I have a really bad habit of correcting strangers, but I've gotten better about it. I don't correct my mother-in-law anymore, I just laugh at her.

Middie 12-16-2007 08:34 PM

Yeah, I've learned not to use words unless I know for sure what they mean. I've used a few words before where I thought I knew what they mean, but when I looked it up it wasn't what I wanted to say at all.

That reminds me of when people say "irregardless". What they REALLY mean is regardless, but they add on the ir for some reason.

Livia 12-16-2007 08:35 PM

I do start to mess around my words when I start to speak to fast because of my nervous system. x.x

But sometimes I do correct other peoples xD

Specially family. I just keep my mouth shut to not annoy them but once in a while irritates me the way they speak so wrong -_-

Mynx 12-16-2007 08:39 PM

I don't misuse words too often. Usually when I'm unsure I ask if I used it correctly :P Unless I'm writing a paper, I read the sentence to my dad and ask him if I used it in the right tense and such.
One of the words I misused before though was, reluctant.
You know, It sounds like reLUCKtant, and I pretty much used it to the opposite of what it means.

TheSatah 12-16-2007 08:43 PM

I said emaciated instead of emancipated once. :C It was silly.

Mostly, though, I'm fairly in-control of my speaking... well, when it comes to that sort of thing. xD I talk REALLY fast, so sometimes, I mesh my words together or switch the endings. You know? Twice in one day, by accident, I said "Beauth and trudy" instead of "Truth and beauty". I make up words a lot, too, but that's on purpose. P:

Sometimes, I automatically correct people around me, even if I don't know them. n__n; I don't mean to. They'll just say something wrong and I'll just sort of say the right thing... they look at me and go "what?" and I'm like "You... it... *Corrects them again*" "... Okay whatever." "*Mumble* Not whatever... *Grumbles as she goes back to what she was doing*"

A lot of my friends tend to mess up their words, so I help them with that, too. xD;

Oh, I know! You know how "bury" is pronounced "barry"? Well, I learned that word by reading it in a book, and to this day, I can't kick the habit of saying "burry". P: It sounds so much better, anyway. xD BARRY-- it's really harsh. ._.

Raining Skittles 12-16-2007 10:10 PM

I mess up all the time. Apparently I say things sub-consiously, and a different word comes out of my mouth. My friend and I had made a dub of 'Ninja Nonsense' and at one part I said "Art of invisibility technique" and I'm walking with her and my other friend, and we're talking about it. At some point I go to say "Art of Invisibility technique" and what I hear is that, but what I said was "I am invisibility technique"

Another time, my friend said she was going to get some tissues, and I was drawing. I didn't notice her leave and come back, and look up at her and say "Weren't you gonna go get some chicken?"

I also tend to leave out words when writing, but not usually when speaking. I sometimes use words I've just learned because I think I know what they mean, when really, I don't know it too well. And for the longest time I never pronounced 'alias' right. I always thought it was pronounced 'Uh-lie-is' not 'ale-e-us' and just recently I was told it was pronounced that way XD After...what, two or three years?

Hahaha, my friend did made a big mistake with switching words like 3 years ago. Somehow this thing with "I'm gonna eat your babies" became an inside joke between us, and she thought it'd be funny to say to other people. She said it to a few people, and then she went up to an old man and went, "I wanna have your babies!" We were all in utter shock, and we just ran away giggling like idiots. I'm not sure if that scared the old man or flattered him, but it was funny as hell.

I know what you mean about leaving words out in writing. I'm not sure why I do it, but I'll be reading over my drafts and see that I left out a few words that I meant to put in there.

  • I mix up parts of my words when I'm speaking too fast too~ It happens more often when it matters that I speak correctly - like if I'm giving a presentation in class or something. I think it's nerves~ X3
    I remember that when I was in a play (with only a minor part, mind you) I developed a stutter for two weeks. I'm not a very confident speaker in general, but if I'm focussing too hard on what I'm saying then I'll trip up even more.

    I don't really have any family that uses words that way - although my younger sister has a tendency to use a lot of slang and she speaks with quite a different accent to me (I've just never really picked up the stereotypical accent of my city), so I sometimes makes fun of her pronunciation to annoy her. ^u^

    I know I've used a different word to what I meant before. Usually, like I said above, stumbling over my words from nerves, but sometimes when I'm just too eager to say something so it comes out wrong. My problem is usually that I miss or repeat parts of words, though. When I was younger, sarcophagus once memorably became "sarcophacophagus".

    I do sometimes correct strangers, but only in my head. I hear incorrect grammar more often than incorrect word usage, and incorrect grammar bugs me more, so I often correct that quite angrily in my head, especially if I've been having a bad day. X3;;

Black Phoenix Risen 12-16-2007 10:36 PM

I don't really mix up words as much as I mispronounce them. I can't say "self-depreciating" for the life of me.
So basically, I know how to use big words, just not how to say them. xD

I correct total strangers all the time.
I'll hear a random man on the street use improper grammar, and I'll go up to him and correct him.
Yeah, I know.
I'm fearless. ^-^

Vappor1 12-16-2007 10:38 PM

I always have a tendency to correct people, especially when it's when they use the wrong word. I think I do that because I'm a freak about literature, hence my wanting to go and major in literature in school in the not so near future. Even if I'm just maybe walking down the street and I pick up on someone saying something wrong, in my head, and sometimes out my mouth, I'll correct 'em. It's just a habit.

KNOX 12-16-2007 10:41 PM

ive never had a family member who did that, but when i was in middle schoo, my mom lived with this one guy and he was constantly trying to make himself seem smarter. even words i didn't know i could tell he was using them wrong.

my step mom always tried not to laught at him. everyone else just gave him a confuse look
.

Ariel 12-16-2007 11:37 PM

Sometimes I do it, and sometimes I speak so quietly, it sounds like I said something different.

[L]ove[H]ate 12-17-2007 12:10 AM

I don't really have anyone in my family that does that, but I'm sure that would be funny if I did have someone or if I'd see someone's family members doing that. HAHAHA!

slushi 12-17-2007 12:30 AM

i tend to do that a lot xD
oops, i have a horrible accent geez x:

Fabby 12-17-2007 07:00 AM

I have a tendency to use the wrong pronouns all the time. I have serious issues with them.

Or at least, I think it's pronouns. The "You, me, he, she" stuff?

IshokuOsero 12-17-2007 07:10 AM

My boyfriend uses horrid chatspeak sometimes, and his grammar and spelling are... really horrible, to say the least. Even when he's trying to write professionally for college or something, he uses a lot of the wrong words - like "your" instead of "you're" or something of that sort. I tried spell and grammar checking his paper once, but didn't even get two paragraphs finished before I gave up.
Then again though, they say you're either an English person or a Math person. He's obviously a Math person... and I'm obviously an English person. ^^;
It's still annoying though!

Thunder 12-17-2007 03:35 PM

My mom doesn't usually say words wrong, she just spells them wrong. All the time. She'll give me a list to go to the store and 'milk' will turn into 'mike.' It's kind of funny to see what she'll come up with. I don't think it's because she doesn't know how to spell these things, I think it's just because she rushes through it and doesn't really give a darn how it's spelled. Another thing she'll do is capitalize something in the middle of a sentence that doesn't need capitalizing. Like she'll leave a note saying, 'Good morning. Could you do the Dishes before I get Home?' It used to annoy me, but I've gotten used to it.

Pkero 12-17-2007 03:55 PM

I don't use extravalarge words to sound intelligible! That's full of ridiculosity!

My cousin is the same way, but she's not a math person either. I've tried to read through her papers but I just don't have the patience for it. But she SPEAKS okay, but she adds "s" to the end of words like "Safeway" so she'll say "Safeways" it's really annoying, actually.

Scribble Me Orange 12-18-2007 12:29 AM

I wish people would be more literate.

Satomi 12-18-2007 12:36 AM

lol, thats really funny! Or you sure its not because she's old? Well... there are many people in hawaii who speak pigeon, or a bit of pigeon. Pigeon is sort of a slang language that ties in with english. It's basically bad grammer, but no one makes fun of them cus everyone speaks like that. Anyone who doesn't, is a nerd.
