Fear & interest of Sharks?
I was just wondering, how many here are interested in sharks but also are afraid of them? I am for one (otherwise I wouldn't be posting it here).
Even though I live in Iceland http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ld_pol_map.jpg We do have sharks here. But none that eat people (except the occasional Great White that seems to come around) the shark we have here only eats plankton much like the Whale Shark but it's not that shark that is here. I don't know what it's called so... yeah, not much help there. (But to the point!) I'm afraid of entering the water (ocean) because I've seen so many shark movies (Deep Blue Sea and all 4 Jaws movies) I just can't (And won't!) go in. Not even a toe. So my question to all of you my fellow Menewshan's. Do you fear and have interests in sharks? |

I have no fear of sharks... Anything from the sea is ust fish to me, and I've never been hurt more by a fish than when it escaped my rod when I was 8... XD
As an interesting fact tho: Did you know that more people die from vending machines than sharks every year? XD That's one of the most amazing silly facts I know, and it always leaves me wondering HOW one could die from a vending machine o.O I think I picked that up in a "useless facts" thread here on Mene... ^^ |
I have no fear of Sharks, I absolutly love them and plan on going in a shark cage with them in the not too distant future. All those Shark movies make it easy to loose sight of what a shark actually is. They're not man eaters!
The reason Sharks attack is because when humans swim the vibrations mimick that of injured fish. What Sharks like to eat. Or blood. Sharks have an insane sense of small and can smell blood over a mile away. And as Sharks generally only go after prey that isn't going to put up much of a fight... you bleeding and mimicking an injured fish is going to draw them. Of course should a Shark come at you, it's very easy to make them scarper. Firstly, stop flapping around. Small movements, just enough so you don't sink and make yourself look big. This will usually put them off, but if they come at you a swift punch on their nose generally deters them. Sharks don't actually like food that fights back. Once you understand something the fear dissolves! |
That's understandable that you would be afraid of sharks...I mean come on they are scary! lol....and my sister is WAY into sharks so I actually know quite a bit about them.
There is only one shark (white tip) that will actually attack a human if they are un-provoked. But generally sharks will NOT attack you as long as you stay away from them, don't pee in the water and don't have some kind of open wound. And if you're that afraid just go somewhere where you KNOW there are not sharks or know that it's a safe area. ^^ |

Good, for you (not meant to be sarcastic if it seems like it! Honest!) Oh, well  I wasn't sure where to post this anyway so I decided to play it safe and post it here. :P |
