Kitami: Oh, there is. It wasn't the lovey-dovey stuff that bothered me...it was the fact that they went angsty suicide emo when they were apart. That's just....freaky.

Aislin 11-13-2008 02:26 AM

@Knerd: An arbitrary litany of other recently read novels might serve to spur the conversation to safer waters!

Any conversation about Twilight is bound to develop into an involved conversation, however, because even people who haven't read it have opinions. It's ubiquitous. Contagious. It's just one of those things, and a lot of people have read it.

There are a lot of books like that, actually.

I think of them as "bookstore bombs." For example, all you have to do is walk into a bookstore and say, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Epilogue!" and the mad, mad world of lit-geeks descends into a warlike discussion. The same mysterious effect occurs after Twilight is mentioned. Or Tolkein. Just say, "Gandolf v. Dumbledore" and watch 'em squirm...

Dumbledore flirts with Gandalf, they enter a relationship, then get it on.
Thus, they both win.

Knerd 11-13-2008 02:58 AM

I picture Gandalf v Dumbledore as an incredibly intense chess match.

Each sits there stroking his beard, pondering his next move for 3 hours before finally lifting his hand and picking up the piece, only to put it back down again and think for another 4 hours before finally making the move.

It would end in the judges finally falling asleep/passing out and knocking over the game board, thus forcing them both to have a rematch with Chinese Checkers. :XD

The movie wasn't made any better by my friend complaining about how big Wendy's teeth were.

I guess I just was looking at it from an innocent standpoint. I try to avoid reading things into children's movies because it just bothers me to some extent that adults or older people taint such things. I've watched a few older cartoons that I've really had to force myself to think of in childlike terms. I've just gotten into that habit. Pom poko really was a challenge though...

....thanks for reminding me of that ungodly disaster. Really. What the hell was Rowling thinking. :|

I think i'll try this next year! xD Too busy this year to do it. Damn you, year 12 and exams. D<
It'll be hard to find books i'd want to read though. @[email protected] And I'm never listening to my friends book suggestions again..

Urgh, all I have to say about Twilight is that the Italian vampire clan, the super strong ones with all the crazy powers, was all that interested me. xD I've never been into teen romance, so if I were to read the books again i'd just skip it and move to the action.

Knerd; I'd like to see them in a rap battle. xD >_>;

`Kitami 11-13-2008 07:00 AM

Bishie:: Do you know that a lot of times, when a couple has been together for many years, and they grow old together, and then one of them dies, the other one can be perfectly healthy, but their health can suddenly deteriorate in a short amount of time for no other reason than grief and then they also die?
And have you ever read Where the Red Fern Grows? If not, you should. :)
And obviously Romeo and Juliet, which played into Twilight anyway.

Its not common to die for lack of love. People do it all the time. People kill themselves all the time because they think there is nothing better than what they had. They're wrong. But that doesn't change how you feel at the time.

Knerd:: You made me lol. :'D

Leeky:: I wanna see them in a rap battle too! XD;

Spanish Leek Squared 11-13-2008 07:12 AM

Kitami; I don't know who'd win.. I mean Dumbledoor has better style, but Gandalf has a pimp staff. o__o

Bishielurfer 11-13-2008 12:43 PM

Kitami: I've heard of old couples who have been together for most of their lives dying of grief when their partner dies, and that makes sense but...firstly) I thought Romeo and Juliet was intensely shallow and grossly unhealthy, and anyone who compares themself to Romeo and Juliet is choosing a poor example (They knew each for THREE DAYS!). Secondly) Bella and Edward were just...too involved with each other. They were together for....what span did the books take? Two years? And already super dependent on each other?
Anyway, the love that Meyer chose to paint is one I've always hated, especially when you encounter it in real life because it's not "fairy tale" and it's not "romantic"---it's scary, and it's unhealthy.

Kat:: So it doesn't say where it is? It just says "The book is on the shelf"? O.o
Cause that sounds really annoying and poorly organized....

Kita: Pretty much. When you first put the search in for title or author or whatever (I put "E.M. Forster" in) it comes up with all the results and underneath it says something like '1 copy available in City Library and Arts Centre. The book is on the shelf'. When you click on one of the results it takes you to a summary of the book and says the general section the book is located in (in my case "Adult Fiction"). From there you're just supposed to find it.

I know if I asked one of the staff they would have followed the same process as me. First I looked in hardbacks, then paperbacks, then I found the classics section and it was only because I knew the book had to be in the building somewhere I looked on the silly display thing.

Aaaaah, but does he wear thick woolen socks? If they're duking it out on cold cement or rocky pebbles, Dumbledore has the clear advantage.

@Knerd: A chess match would be wonderful! I see the situation deteriorating quickly, though: I get an image of Dumbledore enchanting his chess pieces to sing "Hoggy hoggy Hogwarts" while Gandalf demands that his king should, "Fly, you fool!"

^ Nu-uh!
Gandalf can conjure fire! He proved it at Caradhras. Therefore Dumbledore's advantage is null. :talk2hand:

Knerd 11-14-2008 12:50 AM

...There is no good response to that.

You win. :XD

Thoth Star 11-14-2008 01:30 AM

Hello how is everyone? 0 30

Dream_and_Die 11-14-2008 03:16 AM

Great actually! I just started a new book. I was in the book store picking up a friend and I got distracted by the new releases section. @[email protected]

Lilith W 11-14-2008 03:32 AM

I just started reading Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr. I read her other book, Wicked Lovely, and really loved it. I have been wanting to read Ink Exchange for a few months, since I saw it came out, but I hate hard backs. But I ran out of stuff to read so I decided to get it anyways.

Dream_and_Die 11-14-2008 03:39 AM

I'm waiting for Ink Exchange as well. While I was in the store I scoped out a bunch of books to see if they were paper back yet. Sadly all are still hardcover.

I really loved Wicked Lovely. The way she wrote it was different then I expected, a good different. It wasn't a typical faerie book to me and that was refreshing.

WOOT! I never win! : D

Started a new book for my English discussion group, actually chose a book that I was actually interested in reading : Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. I started it in class and the first thing I read was the Notice and laughed out loud during this girls reading in my creative writing class (Not only was I embarrassed but I got scolded by my teacher  )
Quote:

"NOTICE: Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot."
Love it : D

shadowfoot 11-14-2008 03:50 AM

I'm currently reading Chalice by Robin McKinley. I really like it, but it's slow going because of RL issues taking up too much time...

Bishielurfer 11-14-2008 06:20 AM

I am spectacular! Today was a good day. :D

I just started Brave New World by Huxley. :3

KatMagenta 11-14-2008 04:27 PM

Our sixth form chaplain reccomended Brave New World to our class, but they didn't have it in the library when I went on Wednesday. I've nearly finished Maurice, this is the fastest I've read a book in a long time.

I was wondering if anyone had read anything by Jonathon Stroud? He was another sixth form reccomendation, this time from one of the new tutors.

Cherry Who? 11-14-2008 05:10 PM

I made my list a little neater. Split "Want to read" into "wishlist" and "to read," and added a "currently reading" section.
It's here if no one feels like going through the list on the front page.

Thoth Star 11-14-2008 07:24 PM

This thread is sooo fast... It seems like I never get to reply to everyone. ><

@Dream: Cool, whats it called? I just finished this book... I need to go to the library and get another book... I haven't decided on what to read yet though.

@lilith: Whats 'wicked lovely' about? Do you think I'd like it?

@shadow: Hmm, I've never heard of that author... Interesting.

@bishie: I love brave new world! Such a good book! <333
I own a paper-back copy somewhere in my room...
