I get that shops sometimes have to strip books... but who would buy that book? Paperback books without a cover have to look like crap, and I don't think people who don't read often would even buy them, let alone avid book buyers.
|
I don't like books that suddenly acquire stickers that say "Now a major motion picture!" on them. Not in the least because I've never actually heard anyone say 'motion picture' in every day conversation. XD
I would buy a book without a cover if it wasn't for the whole 'omg stealing' bit. If they were cheap (say 50p or less) it would be worth it just to read and then recycle. If you liked it then you could buy a 'real' copy. :/ |
Awesome Immortal~
I haven't read that many books yet... I've been too busy with reading my text books. >< Oh hey, does text books count Knerd? =0 Lol. |
I would read a book without a cover, also. I read paperback exchange books from time to time, on the train or w/e and it's just about the same thing. It's not like I think it's an heirloom copy or something but it's like reading the paper or something.
Anyway, I read another book, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I had read an article by the author in either Writer's Magazine or Writer's Digest, and I saw that she had written 'time travel historical fiction' so I was curious to see how she executed that. So I picked up her first novel (1991) and was kind of disappointed to see it was a HISTORICAL ROMANCE. An 850 page... romance. With about 400 pages of sex scenes. And seriously, every time I hit one of those sex scenes I was like, 'why am I sitting here reading this when I could go out and get laid?' But it was a well executed book, and the character development was pretty good. And so it should be, for 850 pages. |
I would read a book without a cover but I wouldn't buy it. Mainly though I was confused because not many of my books have that and it was printed on the inside cover... Which would be missing had the book been stripped, thus making it useless.
@Leenie: I pulled those ads out of my book, the gap isn't as bad as the cardboard was. Yes my Gena Showalter book had cardboard "business reply mail" ad's 200 pages into it, in the spine glue. T_T |
I'd read a book without a cover if someone gave it to me for free. But I'd be really wishing that it had a cover.
I wouldn't buy one like that, and I wouldn't order one like on a trading site. I take good care of my books, and while I have no problem with used books, I prefer for them to look nice. A crease or two on the spine doesn't bug me, but if the cover has a huge crease down the middle of it, that does. |
people who read a lot of the mass market books (mystery, romance, etc.) would probably buy stripped books if they were really cheap ($2 or less)
and, kat, i totally understand with the motion picture stuff. it's bugging me that my copy of inkheart has that sort of stickerthing, but it's printed on the cover. i was considering getting the hard cover just so i wouldn't have that, but i am cheap and they didn't have the hardcover at the time :[ @guivre - just so you know, i love how you said "why am I sitting here reading this when I could go out and get laid?" XD @dani - well, the publishers were just stupid, then. they usually print those on the title page or the publish-ey page with the publish date and how it's cataloged in the library of congress. >_>;; yay, you got them out! @cherry - pretty much as long as i can read everything, i'm cool with books having everyday wear-and-tear on them. a great deal of my books look like they went through the wash and it breaks my heart, but i can do nothing about it as they are the books i drag with me everywhere. ;_; like my his dark materials omnibus, lirael, stardust, the hobbit, the fellowship of the ring, howl's moving castle, and most of my AvALon, remnants, and deltora quest series books. and my japanese-english dictionary. x_x;; the well-loved books. XD and in general: i listened to about 3 hours of twilight on the plane home today and was trying very hard not to laugh hysterically. and i think i will record audio books as one hour equaling 38 pages. (yey, math!) also, i was looking at my bookshelves right now i've found books i forgot i had. (like the giver and joey pigza loses control.) ps. i am attacking ebay right now for oop books that i need. NEED, I SAY. trust me, i need them. XD |
I really want to try this but I don't have anywhere near 50 books >.<
Although, Christmas and my birthday is coming up so I'm asking my mum to buy me some ... I'll have to come back when I have enough books xD |
The publishers destroy the poor books when they don't sell because they don't want to keep them.
The tax laws were changed a few decades ago and now bookstores and publishers have to pay tax every year on they books they have in their warehouses, so now they no longer want to keep last year's books. Therefore your average genre mass market book now has the shelf life of cottage cheese. v.v |
spring, you can always read books from the library.
and you don't need to do 50, 25 is fine. but it still makes me very sad that you don't have 50 books. :[ HOW CAN YOU LIVE? D:! and angel. it's very sad that they toss the books, though. (but it does explain the warehouse sales on the b&n website every year.) it would be better to offer the books to libraries at a severely discounted price than just throw them out. D: |
Haha, thats funny, but sadly disturbing, angel. D:
|
:)
I'm definitely going to try and do this again next year. I'll try and top myself by reading 200 books, so its more of a challenge. I've just started reading Watership Down, its such a good book! I'm re-reading it. |
Most of the books I've been reading have came from the library (6 out of 10 so far). I probably own more than 50 books but then 20 of them are most likely Dragonlance books and then another 10 are by Top Gear presenters so I haven't got that much variety. XD
I'm reading Poirot stories at the moment. It's usually the wife who did it. |

Do poem anthologies count as books? I've got quite a few old school material that I could dig out, and a copy of 'Of Mice and Men' somewhere o.O It makes myself sad that I don't have 50 books :( I just don't really know what I like because I haven't been into reading for very long ... I don't know how to pick out books to read >.< |
Springy, do you ever read books online? If you don't mind staring at a screen for so long, I can post some websites where you can get a lot of classics for free.
Speaking of which, I wanted to ask you guys: My college gives us a "print quota" for the library, where we pay for about 500 pages that can be printed out on their computers. And even with all the work I've done this semester, I still have over 300 pages left. Since I've already paid for the paper, I want to use it up by printing off some books. Anyone have any suggestions for classics that I could find online and print off? I've already printed "The Good Soldier" by Ford Madox Ford. (If I lower the font size, use duplex printing and put 2 pages on each side, I can print off a good size book with only 20-25 pages.) |
Knerd: I've read some fanfics online, so I wouldn't be opposed to it. ^^ Then if/when I find some that I do like, I can go out and buy them because I can't wait to go off to uni and have my own little book shelf (well big shelf if I get a lot of books :P)
|
@spring - anything you want to count as books, counts.
and anthologies definitely count. gasp! just. go to the store and find a section you might like (teen fiction/adult fiction/whatever) and just read the summaries on the back and make a list of ones that seem interesting. if worst comes to worst, just come and ask one of us. most likely one of the people in this thread will have read it and give you a thumbs up or down on the book. :] @knerd - actually, i've read very few classics, so i can't really recommend anything. and just to make you all drool: my bookcases (and the map) i'm actually due to take a new picture soon since i've added at least 10 books and 20 manga since that was taken and rearranged my entire manga bookcase. but i'm being lazy right now since there's a pile of stuff in front of the bottom shelves. ;_; |
That's... a lot of books.
|
i started young? 8D
it's a hereditary addiction, although i think it skipped a generation on both side. my mom and dad don't read much. and now you understand why it is so good to have a job at b&n. a lot of the money i get at work goes right back to the company. XD |
Yet with all those books you haven't read even a quarter of the books I own. xD
I really want to display all the books I read before High school... I'm pretty sure that the only books showing are from mid 10th grade on. Though I just don't have enough walls. I think the rest are in about 10 boxes in the garage. ^_^ I know I own almost all of Heartland and the pet rescue series. By the by I just finished 'The Darkest Night' by Gena Showalter |
I have a ton of books from when I was a kid/pre-teen, but I don't really display those since I wouldn't like them now. They're up in the attic. A few I'm keeping, but most I'm getting rid of.
|
@dani - i haven't gone through my books to add the ones to the bookshelf thing on facebook.
not to mention i forgot the whole plot of some of the books i've read so i'm not marking them down as read. (coughclaidijournalscough) TEEHEE GENE SHOWALTER. was it good? @cherry - i included all the preteen books in my shelves because i still love most of them. thank you for inadvertently reminding me that i need to go pick up the books i ordered. 8D (journey into the west, here i come! goodbye $100!) |
A few of my books like Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events, Louis Lowry books and some other of the really good ones I'm keeping. But I don't reread books much, and a lot of the books just sound kind of dumb to me now, so there's no point in keeping most of them for me.

You work at Barnes and Noble!? I envy you! All we have is borders and I loathe border, but we are getting a B&N soon so I'm hoping to get a job there..hopefully. I use to go there every two weeks with my mom and get books, I miss that P.P |
Spring`Tyme Fresh // Aww -patpat- I don't have 5O books either.
I'm really picky about books... book covers always look tempting, but I don't want to buy books that turn out to be less than satisfying. So I just go to the library. Is there other libraries you can go to? I go to a few. ^^ I want my own nice bookshelf too... XD I have a tiny desk for my 1O-15 books. ^^;; Knerd // Ooh I remember I had that option, except I didn't have to pay for my X number of prints per class... I remember I still had some left over, but never thought to use them in the way you just mentioned! What a good idea. c: I'm not in college anymore so I don't think I can go to their library now and try that. XDD; And sorry, I have no idea about online classics.. >w< tirethminet // Dang... that's a lot. O____O <333 And you work at Barnes and Nobles? Neato. :]] There's a Starbucks in mines. |
