Ah, college. I, sadly, had to drop out due to financial aid issues. The school, rather than giving me help with my aid, decided to play Hot Potato when it came to kids who needed aid to pay their tuition. Thus, I got the runaround every time I need to figure something out when it came to my aid. Finally, in my third semester, I just got sick and tired of it and...left.

And now that I know I owe nearly 20k, and that getting into college is going to be hell, I've pretty much given up hope now that I'll EVER see a college campus again.

nemo.love_22 06-14-2013 09:20 PM

I'm sorry to hear that. That really is wrong of them. We're juggling at the moment, having three of us in college at the same time. My mum, my brother, and myself.

I'd say don't give up and try to get on their case about it, because what they did to you was wrong! :(

TaiyoTsuki 06-14-2013 09:30 PM

Yeah....this was also about two years ago. Besides, chances are if I got on their case more, they'd just find something ELSE to fine me for.

nemo.love_22 06-14-2013 09:33 PM

Honestly what they've done is wrong, so so wrong! D: That just isn't fair! :(

TaiyoTsuki 06-14-2013 09:36 PM

Newsflash; the entire flipping universe isn't fair. I figured this out even when I was still in the womb; why else would I have come out butt first?

nemo.love_22 06-14-2013 09:43 PM

But I honestly you as just taking what they're throwing at you and not really fighting it.

TaiyoTsuki 06-14-2013 09:48 PM

Hey, I've learned by now that my opinion doesn't matter, even if my opinion is, essentially "you guys shouldn't play 'hot potato' with kids who need financial aid, because they're your best students and you should do all you can to keep them!". In this world, the only opinion that matters is that of the people who are in power, whether it be in college, at work or the whole damned government, no matter how wrong their opinion is.

In other words, if you don't have the money and the power and the popularity, your opinion is wrong and someone else's is right, despite reality.

Guys! Guys! I finished that whopper of a book, A Game of Thrones! [eager] I didn't think I'd be able to do it, but it's amazing what a little internet-impaired time can do for advancing other pursuits. :) Now it's on to book two!

Seridano 06-17-2013 03:38 AM

Go, Belly, go! Speaking of that series...I really ought to finish A Storm of Swords...

Roxxi Shiagami 06-18-2013 12:17 AM

how is that series? I've been curious about it, but wasn't sure how good it was.

Knerd 06-18-2013 12:44 AM

Woohoo! The series will pick up steam as you keep reading through it. I really enjoyed reading Song of Fire and Ice. It's definitely worth all the time and effort. [yes]

KatMagenta 06-19-2013 05:29 PM

I need to try and finish my library books before next week in case I end up being taken home by my parents with some of my belongings after graduation. [lol]

TaiyoTsuki 06-27-2013 04:03 PM

My library sucks. It seems that whenever I go looking for a book it's either checked out or they just plain don't have it, even if it's in the middle of a series. Another thing that I've found is sad but true about the library, is that with some people and some books, once they're checked out they're probably never going to be checked back in.

On the upside, I'm about half a dozen more books into my challenge. Just need to get the listed.

Knerd 06-28-2013 01:24 PM

Does your town have an inter-library loan system? Here in NY, most libraries are synched together in a loaning system. If your local library doesn't have a book, then the librarians can get on the phone and request to have it shipped over from another location. It's pretty awesome, but very time consuming and a little tedious if you're anxious to read something quickly.

And I know that more and more libraries are starting to loan out e-books as well. Would you ever be interested in reading a book on your computer? You don't even need a Kindle/Nook for it, just a .pdf viewing program. [yes]

KatMagenta 06-29-2013 10:05 AM

My library has the inter-loan thing but there was a fee for it (which I'm led to believe is unusual?). Another option would be to reserve the books you're interested in and then either nobody else can take them out or as soon as they come back in you'll be alerted. :)

I thought libraries having completely random books from a series, especially multiple copies of the same volume, was just a fact of life. [lol]

BellyButton 07-30-2013 03:30 AM

This might be sacrilegious to ask, but do any of you have any experience with audible.com? I'm looking for something I can listen to while I crochet and I'm debating trying their audiobooks out.

Knerd 07-30-2013 09:19 PM

Nope, I've never tried Audible. I actually use The Audiobook Bay for audiobooks. They've got a pretty good collection at this point. [yes]

Skrae 07-31-2013 07:02 PM

Game of Thrones series is good, but don't get attached to any character. T_T
I love being able to check out e-books, because the library chain I go to is at least a 30 minute drive from my house. Our county library isn't very well-rounded.

Roxxi Shiagami 08-18-2013 12:27 AM

Yay! Just finished my challenge (I even did it a few months early!) Still gonna keep reading and see how far I can go. But now I can concentrate on other things, :P

KatMagenta 08-19-2013 01:40 PM

Good work, Roxxi!

I need to update my list after holiday readings.

Chexala 08-26-2013 05:09 AM

@BellyButton: My mom has an audible.com account, and she's gotten some good books through them. I listened to all the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books through her account a few years ago, and it was good quality. Only thing I don't like about audible is that they got bought up by Amazon. <sigh>

I making slow but steady progress with my reading. I just finished listening to the Harry Potter series, which is something I do every year or two. I get more and more out of those books every time I read/listen to them, and they still make me laugh and cry out loud. I also recently started re-reading The Handmaid's Tale. Margaret Atwood writes beautifully, I think. Especially in comparison to the deeply silly romance novella I read a few weeks ago. [yes]

According to my Goodreads account, I am "5 books behind schedule" for meeting my goal this year. I'll have to pick up the pace a bit from here on out. (Oh woe and sorrow, how hard my life is! [lol])

Roxxi Shiagami 08-27-2013 01:47 AM

I always keep forgetting to update my good reads account, lol.

Hate to see what it says now. [sweat]

nemo.love_22 08-27-2013 06:09 AM

Looks like all I will have time for now with reading is my textbooks - joy. >.< Haha! I kinda lost motivation, as I was focusing on my move that I just made, and I forgot to bring most of my books down to school with me. [cry] I do have the books on my Nook that are with me, but I did have a few books I was reading in actual book form, not as an ebook, and I don't have them. *pouts* :(

TaiyoTsuki 09-05-2013 08:19 PM

I have finally finished A Clash of Kings! Gods, that book is a monster. I'm now on A Storm of Swords, and I'm probably going to be working on it for a week, before I can at last read A Feast for Crows (which I have), and A Dance with Dragons (which I do not have).

Of course, once I finish up those monster books, I'm going to start on some steampunk novels I got recently. Fun fun!

KatMagenta 09-05-2013 08:28 PM

My books from my flat are still in boxes after moving back home. [gonk] After I finish my library books I'll see if I can dig my ASoIaF books out.
