It can be tough to read ^^; I had to read it for a class though. I don't really know Camus' style (it's the only book of his I've read), so I can't really say much other than what I know from The Stranger

Sir.Spoon: I would be saying the same thing if there weren't a few books on my list that I haven't finished >.>;

What class is that?

His style of writing is just . . . well, he doesn't use sentences like other authors. He has short sentences, that I feel could be expanded to be a tad longer and more complete.

I don't know if that explained anything.

English class. It had something to do with the topic we were covering in literature (existentialism, I think)

I definitely would say stay away from Hemmingway hen (though you may come across him anyway). While the styles overall are different, both use short, somewhat to the point sentences.

Alaunt 01-12-2008 03:46 AM

I've read lots of Hemningway. But, when I read his stuff I was in Elementry, so I really remember much of any of his stuff. Except for the Old Man and the Sea which I had to do a report on for eigth grade. >.<

secretdae007 01-12-2008 04:08 AM

I actually like The Sun Also Rises. I read it 2 years ago for English but most people in my class didn't like it (preferred The Great Gatsby)

Alaunt 01-12-2008 04:38 AM

The Great Gatsby is okay in my opinion.I don't really remember much of The Sun Also Rises.

I read The Great Gatsby when I was in fourth(?) grade and now I have to read it for English this year. Ugh. Am I going to hate it.

kitkat 01-12-2008 04:49 AM

My friend got me a present for our friendness today :3
It was a bookmark and a manga to complete my set ^o^

secretdae007 01-12-2008 04:51 AM

Gatsby was better in film than in book, in my opinion... And it saved me from having to actually finish the story to take the test >.>;

Heiyuu 01-12-2008 05:04 AM

Gatsby. You ever have a teacher who loves a book you're apathetic to? Makes it seem a lot worse. I dunno, if you're gonna force me to read a classic, it would be 1984 or Fahrenheit 451.

Any book you read this year counts towards the challenge. So if you're already finished one or two, be sure to put them on your list.

The Great Gatsby never really stuck with me. I had to read it in 10th grade, and all I remember are a ton of horribly obvious metaphors in the writing - the stopped clock, and things of that nature. I realize that they were meant to be right there in the face of the reader, but that sort of style doesn't sit well with me. I actually think that the story could have been better told by another author.

Edit: Brand new banner for the front page. What do you guys think?

Dystopia 01-12-2008 07:07 PM

Can you show me how to use the list command to list all my books?

Knerd 01-12-2008 07:57 PM

The list code currently doesn't do anything on our forums, so it would be a little counterproductive to use it. So you can just title your post and number your books, and I think we'll all get the general idea. =)

Dystopia 01-12-2008 08:02 PM

Anna's Reading List

1. The Shadow Thieves
2. The Pigman
3. The Sisters Grimm
4. Stormbreaker
5. Skeleton Key
6. New Moon
7. Eclipse

Current Goal: 50 Books

Dystopia 01-12-2008 08:02 PM

I hope you don't mind the double post, but I wanted to leave my list clean.

I'm not sure if most of the books I've finished were before or after January. xD

kitkat 01-13-2008 12:12 AM

Eww Knerd is forest green now >.<

-Notices Knerds outfit is glitched- I still don't understand
how that skirt can just make random colours =/ Its funny
though :D

Smellerbee 01-13-2008 12:13 AM

I just finished The Stranger.

I thought it was great. I feel I can understand Meursault's beliefs.

I read Fahrenheit 451 in 9th grade and really wasn't into it... When I read, I want to get away, which is why I prefer that of fantasy genre. I'm not really looking for books that critique society.

Edit: Knerd- Cute banner ^^

Knerd 01-13-2008 08:24 PM

Okay, the list on the front page is updated again. =)

@kitkat - Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of this green either. If it has to be green, I'd rather have the light, Easter-y green there was before. But if it was up to me I'd get my red back.

@secretdae007 - You might like some of Ray Bradbury's short stories better. He's known for his science fiction work, but I can think of a whole collection of stories that are more along the lines of fantasy.

^ I've never heard of that book before. Who is it by? The title makes it sound really interesting.

Alaunt 01-14-2008 12:55 AM

Hey, Knerd. Not to be a pest or anything, but I noticed that there is no link to my book list.

@Secret - Fahrenheit 451 was actually really good in my opinion. It is one of two of Bradbury's books that I actually like.

@Heiyuu - 1984 was not one of my favorites. I didn't like it at all, but then again, I was in Elementry when I first read it, and I didn't really understand it.

Knerd 01-14-2008 12:59 AM

Oops, I'm sorry! I've got you up on the list now. And thanks to the magic of alphabetical order, you even get to be first. =)

Alaunt 01-14-2008 01:02 AM

Oh. Really? Thankyou.

Wynna 01-14-2008 09:49 PM

(This would be my first post in this thread for well..a long time)
I'm reading this book now. Called Hamish X and The Cheese Pirates . I thought it would be a stupid like preteen book. But it's really good, it quite funny at times.

It's about an orphanage/cheese factory in Windcity (it's the windiest city in the world), where children are forced to make cheese. And then there's these cheese pirates and that...and so for it's pretty good.

-Also, there's footnotes like on every page offering additional humor to the text. -

Krystyne 01-14-2008 10:04 PM

Oooooh, this sounds so interesting...o.o I wish to do this. :3

I just have a question, though: if you've already read a book, but love it so much you like reading it again (to find all the things you missed before, heh), does it count? Also, do trivia books count?

I come up with the nerdiest [email protected][email protected];
