Argh, I keep forgetting to read!
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is good, it's just not so compelling that I remember to read it all the time. xD I have tons of free time today, though, so as long as the event doesn't grab me in death grip, I'll get some reading done today. My motivation is that I have another Max Barry book waiting for me. xD Well, that, and I DO want to know what happens in this book. |
Max Barry? He wrote Jennifer Government, right?
I picked up that novel a few weeks ago. I haven't had the chance to read it, but the premise sounds really interesting. |
Yep!
I haven't read Jennifer Government yet either. My boyfriend has, though. He says that it's not his best book, but that it's by no means bad. I read Syrup a month or so ago, and it's great. Barry has a very witty and sarcastic style that's really intelligent and funny. Definitely read Syrup if you ever happen to run across it (He's credited as Maxx Barry though, not Max. It's a joke based off the premise of the book), it's really good. |
Aislin:: I had a thing with a Christopher once. Since my name is Christa, that was annoying, because when someone would say "Chris" we'd both answer. >_>
Lol at Albus Severus Syndrome. :'D Bishie:: Gabriel is such an awesome name. ^_^ |
I knew a Danielle and Danelle. They are married now...
I'm reading A Posse of Princesses right now. |
o_O Posse of Princesses? Wuzzat?

Oh! There are some books on your list that sound really nice, Viki. I'll have to look at a few of those. ^-^
|
Hello Viki!
How did you like Lolita? My best friend has been attempting to get me to read it for some time now, but I could never quite bring myself to add it to my book-list. You've just started and you're almost done! :P |
Hopefully she can get more that 50 books. ^-^
|
@Alaunt: Yes! And if I had to guess, probably will. :P
I'd like to go above 50 books as well. I'm trying to race myself. Which is great, because it makes my literary-themed procrastination feel like an achievement! I love your green-motif Halloween outfit, by the way. |
Aislin: I've been trying to read Lolita, too, but it has so much French x__X I'm taking French right now, though, so hopefully I can try again in a couple months :D

I'm just trying to get to 200 at the moment. ^-^ Nice. You should try to get more reading in. It has actually be proven that reading increases a persons intelligence level . . . I'm not say you aren't intelligent, you know . . . Just to clarify Thankyou! *huggles avi* |
@ Alaunt: Actually, I usually do get a fair bit of reading in. But school tends to... I don't know, depress me? And by depress, I mean literally "flatten to the point of creating a depression in the cement."
But yes, I'm trying to get more reading in. I figure if I balance the appropriate amount of sci-fi, classic literature and philosophy, I can get a nice and healthy crazy going on. Books are my only shield at this point. ;) 200, though? You are genius! And wonderful! What kind of books do you prefer? |
I so totally know what that is like.
That is good. Really good. Yes, 200. Well, I tend to prefer Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Romance. You? |
I've had a strong preference for Sci-fi/Fantasy since I was but a wee one. I also really enjoy any type of satire, and can get into historical fiction. Romance as a genre usually irks me (think dime-novels), but I'm okay with romance sprinkled into a novel so long as there's a strong flavor of plot mingled in with it. Romantic novels work for me, however, as in the Tom-Sawyer-infused genre.
I also find romances acceptable if they lead to fun one-liners. As for one-liners: Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain, all the way. |
Lol sorry bout the looong absence..
Actually, Lolita wasnt a bad book. I couldnt understand a lot of the points the author was trying to make though... "Thats guy was such a *FRENCH* and then he *FRENCH* and then he said *FRENCH*" It actually got pretty annoying. And you have to be pretty desensitized to the whole pedo-bear concept. But knowing how many ex-gaia addicts are on here, ya'll should be fine XD |
Whoa, that's a whole new thing that I didn't know about gaia! Never visited that site, actually.
I'll be cool on the French. Hopefully the other bit is just a time-era difference? Also: your avatar has a cake on her head. Which cool, and could be really useful on camping trips. :) |
That was the way of books back then. Many of them contained French because the readers were simply expected to know it since the readers were supposedly classically educated.
|
owo Well, actually, it was originally published in Paris, so...you know...
|
Possibly that could have something to do with it.
I've noted the same tendency in several Poe stories, though, as well-- he was an American, and published in the late 1800s, early 1900s. That tendency also crops up in Jane Eyre, an English novel of the 1830s. Though its publication in Paris signifies the author's connection to the language, French snippets were definitely in vogue for at least 100 years before the novel's debut: Lolita was published in 1950. The French are just trying to mess with us all, n'est ce pas? ;) |

I think I was supposed to make a list for over here but never did, guess I've lost my challenge
