Professional Wrestling

Mene dose not have a section about sports so... here goes...

Professional Wrestling dose not have to = WWE
There are other wrestling organizations becides the WWE out there!

I just wanted to see what people here on Mene thought of Professional Wrestling. I've been a fan of Professional Wrestling for over 20 years now (which is an impressive thing since i'm only 23).

Yes, I understand it is "fake" and set up. But it is a very dificult sport none the less. They spend hours in training to learn how to fall down correctly so it looks like they get hurt without hurting themselves or their opponents.

There are also many local or "minor" leauge professioanl wrestling places, at least near me, and quite a few schools as well. My fieance is going to one of these school, and his teacher was in actually in the WWF once, which is really cool. He's been in the school for about 2 years, and he wrestles in shows about once a month. When I go with him I usualy get to help sell stuff at the consession stand, and I get to meet all the wrestlers. I love it when they get famous wrestlers for their events.

Discuss - Wrestling
Have you ever watched it? Do you like it?
Have you ever been to a local match?
Have you ever met a wrestler?

Takuto 01-09-2008 07:57 PM

I agree with you.
Even though many people say that it is "fake," it takes a lot of courage to do such a hard sport. My boyfriend did wrestling in high school so he was of course a huge fan of the WWE. (sadly I had to join the bandwaggon.) As a girl, I always thought that it was stupid but it is pretty amusing. It's a great source of entertainment. (there is so much rivalry in the sport. xD.)

Titenya 01-09-2008 08:07 PM

There are female wrestlers as well. Most of the women in the televised wrestling events are shown scantily clad, basically slapping ewachother arround... but I've seen some of the girls in the local events as well. They can stand toe to toe wit hteh 6foot guys and hold their own. One girl Leiah was my Jared's training partner for a while. and she was prety good. And since they choose their own costumes there aren't as many of the half naked diva's that are in other promotions like the WWE.

` Nitemare 01-09-2008 09:10 PM

I find it a bit...pathetic.
But hey if people like it, sure.
Everyone's personality and movement is completely fake.
That's the main thing I have a problem with.

All the guys give off this tough guy attitude and it's irritating.

Not quite into muscular guys in tight clothing tackling each other.
Same with the girls, it's almost to the point of perversion.
They are basically the cheerleaders for Wrestling.
All sports have to have some eye candy.

Titenya 01-09-2008 09:14 PM

That's just on the tv... I take it you've never been to any local matches. My fieanc's costume right now is a t-shirt and a pair of kinda baggy cameo shorts that come to about his knees and black boots... so nto all the guys or girls have tight revealing cloathing.

Ah, I used to watch wrestling all the time. First WWE and then TNA.
I haven't watched it for a few years though... WWE started to get
lame because it was all about naked women. That was not entertaining. :'[
And I never knew what time/day TNA was on.

I talk to a few wrestlers; one is a local wrestler and another
is a backyard wrestler. o__o; Here's a vid with one of them in it a few times:

I may start watching wrestling again in the future,
but only if I had someone to watch it with.

aphrodite remix 01-09-2008 10:05 PM

I absolutely hate "proffessional" wrestling. I think that it is over dramatic, silly, and a waste of time. That of course is my own oppinion and I have nothing against people who actually watch and enjoy it. However I'd rather just watch some sort of cheesy B Drama show like "The young and the restless" than waste my time watching a cheesy B drama/action show. Actually Walker Texas Ranger had more story line and real effects than wrestling does.

Regardless, it gives people jobs, and provides a form of entertainment. I enjoy Olympic Wrestling, and my cousing was a Gold Medalist for many years, and almost made it to the Olympics for her weight class. Actual Olympic wrestling is what I consider Proffessional Wrestling and I find it much more enjoyable than watching WWE, or any other drama wrestling program.

Titenya 01-09-2008 10:23 PM

@'clockwork I don't like or count back yard wrestling in any way. Any one can jump on a trampoline and throw some one arround and say they are a back year wrestler...

@aphrodite remix not all professional wrestling is like the wwe...

Smellerbee 01-09-2008 11:44 PM

A fake sport doesn't seem very interesting to me.

Wynna 01-10-2008 12:36 AM

I usually watch the Olympic wrestling events, during the summer games. I don't mind it as a sport.

But what I don't like is the professional wresting, like I don't get the whole scripting thing, and the showing off and stuff like that. Like why couldn't it just be like a soccer game instead of all that show and tell crap.

EpoxyObsession 01-10-2008 01:43 AM

My brother is a pro wrestling fan. I think it's boring, personally. I've never seen any professional wrestling that had a decent plot, decent actors, or anything resembling realism.

But maybe I just haven't seen enough pro wrestling. *shrug*

That's .... not what it is at all. xD A lot of them have wrestled
in the ring as well and can do anything that local wrestlers can do.

Did you even watch the video? Some of them are amazing. xD

Cherry Who? 01-10-2008 02:26 AM

It looks way too macho. Just the whole... "RAWR IM TOUGH LOOK HOW BIG MY MUSCLES ARE GRRRR" thing is... gross, to me. Now, that may only be WWE. I don't know. Just, when you see pictures of these wrestlers, flexing their muscles, and screaming in a way that they look constipated, it's just so disgusting to me. And the story lines are so cheesy.

clock 01-10-2008 02:34 AM

Eww, yeah those huge muscle guys are gross. Most of the ones I liked aren't that huge.

Teeth 01-10-2008 02:58 AM

LOL. My dad used to be the total WWE-a-holic and made me watch it with him ALL. THE. DAMN. TIME. D:
I got pretty into it and would wrestle with my dad. he tells me he could have been in it if he wanted to but he thought having a kid would affect it badly so he didn't, plus he didn't think his mom approved of it..o.o (HA, my dads such a mommas boy. 8D He still lives with her, too!)
I even have the Smackdown game for Playstation that I used to play all teh time when I was a kid. My favorite character was Lita. Totally. Maybe the Undertaker, too.
I don't watch it now-a-days alot, neither does my dad, we're too busy with work and school. Growing up sucks, no? D:
I watched some of it last week..and i don't like the new wrestlers at ALL. I want the oldies ones back! Lita! Trisha! Kat! Kane! Kurt Angel! Teri! Mankind!
OMG I WATCHED A DOCUMENTARY ON MANKIND. So sad man, so sad. He's a good dude. 83

My friend’s dating a wrestler from the WWE. I’m not a big fan of it, but put up with it just because she’s so into this guy and I don’t really want to be rude about it. I do agree that it would take a lot of training and work to make it seem realistic even though it’s staged. I haven’t seen any other wrestling besides WWE stuff so I don’t really have an opinion on it either way.

I have not, but that is because I was told by professional wrestlers that Backyard wrestling wasn't worth watching... that it was mainly people who couldn't afford or were not good enough to get into a decent school to learn the real stuff.

And even if the outcome is decided before the match beguins, a lot of the wrestlers are real athleates. They spend a lot of time and energy leaning how to do what they do, more than some other lazy sports... They have practive 2-3 nights a week, and on the other days they go to the gym to work out.

And not every promotion has the drama factor, some are there just to have a fun sporting event, that is family friendly unlike a lot of the stuff on tv. sure some one will look like they got hurt, but most of the time they are fine.

Many of the professional wrestlers were on wrestling and other sports teams in Highschool and College, but college/olympic wrestling is a very narrow field to get into, so not many people actually make it that far, but they can use their skills elsewhere.

@Teeth those aren't oldies... oldies wouldbe legends like Brutis the barber or Jimmy superfly snukka, both who I have met in person... Hulk Hogan, Macho man, andre the giant, the big boss man, the road wariros, Mula and May Young... those are the oldies and the legends (though some of them are dead...)

I've never been interested in wrestling.. x__x; I get the idea that it is a fight between two people and since I don't really know much about it, I always imagine something like the WWE, which I don't like. ><

I don't like seeing people beating each other to a bloody pulp or get hurt. Which is why I don't like Judo, or any other of those type of sports. .___. I like martial arts and other related fighting styles only through the training parts, but not in competitions when they try to hurt each other. ><

Urboros 01-10-2008 05:30 PM

I'm a bit wary of that sport, I've seen highschool matches and the idea of large men in spandex grappling each other bothers me. It reminds me of sumo wrestlers. :?

the sport of Wrestling I could take it or leave it.

Ah well, suit yourself. The guy I know who is a backyard wrestler
travels all over the country. Yup, he's really poor and sucks. /sarcasm

Yeah 01-10-2008 09:06 PM

It's Fake!

Amiiu 01-10-2008 10:15 PM

Have you ever watched it? Do you like it? Nope, nor do I have intention of doing so.
Have you ever been to a local match? No, I've never been to a local match xP
Have you ever met a wrestler? And I have never met a wrestler before either.

@ Phedre

To be honest I try and avoid prof wrestling, so I really have seen much aside from the WWE. Maybe it isn't fair to judge on that...

Berginyon 01-11-2008 02:56 AM

I always think of professional wrestling as a really physical, violent form of soap opera. And it makes it alot more interesting than, say, the Days of our Lives or other dull stuff, because they invariably settle their issues by kicking the crap out of one another.

My favorite is Triple H. Mainly because there's nobody else like him... he can do things that are utterly despicable and people still cheer for him, mainly because he has a great villain charisma. And not only that, but whenever he's a face, he's still just as brutal as Stone Cold. And he's done some pretty crazy stuff in the name of pleasing the fans... who would want the pressure of wrestling an hour long iron man match and having to keep it interesting and exciting the whole time, for instance?

Anyways, I don't watch it so much anymore, typically because when it's on, I'm usually working.
