I am legend... or was that I am disappointed?

Ok, i saw I am legend... It wasnt like the graphic novel much at all. Anyone whos read this book can back me up on this, but it seems like instead of making the "I am legend" movie they just turned will smith into a black charleton heston and remade the omega man with dumber mutants. I dunno, maybe its just me but there should be some kind of requirement to keep directors and screenwriters from saying their making a movie based on a graphic novel if the two have nothing to do with each other outside the title. Its inexcusable these days to not be able to do something so simple as transitioning a book into a movie... if i had read the book FIRST, i would've come out of that movie mad as all heck (and not just DEEPLY depressed like i wound up doing) the end of the graphic novel (while i wont spoil it for anyone) was poetic, the end of the movie was for lack of a better term retarded... I get that the guy in the movie had to die because it was his site or whatever he was clinging to to remain sane. But suddenly having this woman show up and talking about messages from god... like i said i dont want to spoil it any more than i already have for people who didnt see it but what was so wrong with the actual story of the graphic novel? Was the idea of a human being turning out to be a confused killer not good enough for the studio? Please tell me i'm not the only one who feels this way.

I wasn't disappointed at all. Mainly because when the screenwriter remakes a book, most of the time they have permission from the author to change it to be more their style. Basing it completely off the book/graphic novel would have been boring. I mean, Harry Potter was even a bit different from the books. But I guess it's just my opinion. I Am Legend is one of my favorite movies right now. I liked it. Whether or not it's exactly like the book.

I think you would be surprised, Snuffy, how little hollywood tends to give a damn how close they keep to the books.
The HellBoy movie, Mignolia almost had to go to war to keep things even to the level of accuracy they were at.
Another prime example? Mary Poppins. The author -wept- over the butchery done to her novel.
Yet another example or two. "The Postman" and "The Dark Is Rising."
Dark Is Rising, only ONE member of the cast actually read the books. And the author had extreme trepidation, but very little say at that point. The rest of the actors declared the book, a Children's book mind you 'too difficult'.

From what I've seen of "I am Legend", I think I'd label it "I am Disappointment" also. I've yet to hear anything really good about that movie if you know anything about the original. A bunch of people couldn't even tell they were looking at vampires, they thought it was a bad remake of 28 Days.

I'm trying to decide if this should be here or in the Media area though. C_C Cause we're technically talking about the movie as much as about the comic.

One of the saddest things about the monsters in "I am legend" the movie was that they were like slightly intellegent zombies with a sensitivity to sun and very little to do with actual vampires... and theres a world of difference between having to cut stuff out of a HUGE book to make space in the movie (like in the case of harry potter) and completly rewriting the entire thing. Stuff like that is why i'm very nervous about the watchmen movie...

I am Legend was a comic book?

I thought it was a novel by Richard Matheson

I thought I am Legend was quite an old sci-fi novel.
I haven't read it though, and even I was disappointed. The woman and the boy ruined the feel of the whole film - the boy doesn't even seem to ave ANY point, beyond "Bang! Instant nuclear family time!"

The end was kinda lame as well. It just... didn't really make sense or seem necessary.

The Dark is Rising... ARG. From what I've seen and heard the only thing it shares is a vague concept of magic. Why the heck did they make the main character American, when the book is rooted in English folklore? Arg arg arg.

Has anyone seen the alternate ending (which is supposed to better follow the original story)? I <3 it so much more than the crappy ending they showed in the theatres...

Yeah the "controversial" alternate ending... it wasnt all that great, but it sucked LESS than the one in theatres. It was closer in some tiny regard to the actual book.
