I guess I'm the only one who knew about this for a long time. It was anounced in the special features of the second books dvd set. M. Night wanted to make the movie because his daughter was a huge fan.
I also knew that M Night's daughter was a big fan. I found this out while watching an interview Night was giving on this movie and the reasons he was making it. |
While it hasn't been said for quite a few pages...I feel it it worth repeating that the casting isn't exactly stellar. (Neither is the director's track record...though that's merely my opinion).
Feel free to take a gander at the casting list here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0938283/ |
Who I think should play is..
Alexa Vega as Katara http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/a...a_sd403579.jpg Evvana Lynch as Toph http://i315.photobucket.com/albums/l...rap/evanna.jpg Freddie Highmore as Ang http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o..._highmore_.jpg yea....thats about all I can think of right now go here for the cast and crew http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417299/fullcredits#cast haha the guy playing zuko is the voice of jake long from that dragon show on disney |
Porkbackfat - it is definitely always worth repeating how atrocious the casting is. (I can't say on the director - I've never seen any of his films, but I've heard lots of people complain about them so that is definitely not a good sign.) The casting is so bad that I might not see the movie for that reason.
Ketsuri666 - I'm afraid that I disagree with some of your selections. Katara should be played by someone of Inuit or at least Native American ancestry - Alexa Vega looks nothing like Katara. Evvana Lynch, at least from the picture you posted, seems too blond and frail for someone like Toph. Unfortunately Toph isn't even going to make it in the movie :< |
You might have seen some of his movies and not known about it mebbe? 6th Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Lady in the Water, The Happening.... I thought the 6th Sense was pretty good. As for the rest if someone found the original scripts, loaded them into a shotgun and blew them straight to hell, it would hurt my feelings any.
As for Freddie Highmore....that kid creeps me right the hell out.... |
Shimawa_zen- I guess so for katara, someone of native american descent would be better, but she was the first actress that came to mind, probably because she sounds like the voice actor for katara. But I think it would be interesting for toph to be played by evvana lynch, because evvana just has that sort of weird charm to her which reminded me of toph.

I've been a fan of the cartoon series since it came out when I was in 7th grade. [Now I'm in 12th] My friend and I are so happy that there will be a live action. I want to go see it with her but she lives on the other side of the USA than me so we cant. -sad-
From what I saw on the internet, they seem to be doing it right. I found some pictures of the sets and they look right. I really want them to do an amazing job on this movie, if not, I'll be crushed. D: |
Personally I hate that he is directing this film. Sorry, but I was not impressed with the couple films I saw by him.
Avatar is probably one of the best series that I've actually watched all the way through and haven't lacked interest in any way, shape or form. So far I dislike the cast and can see he is leaving out more important characters, though I'm sure the reason being is because there isn't enough time for filming and money to explain who the extras are. I dislike that Zuko will be played by Dev Patel. I'm sorry but Zuko didn't appear to be of Indian origin in the series so I was sort of bothered that he already took one main character and changed a part of him. Yes it is just skin color and I have nothing against other cultures and skin tones, just that if you are to make a movie based off of a well known book or series, please try to stay as close to the original character description as possible. Who knows? I could end up loving this film, I just don't like what I see so far from it and hope I am wrong. |
A Zuko played by Dev Patel is better than played by the first guy that they were going to have playing him. But I agree - Zuko doesn't look at all of Indian origin.
I'll post a few pics of my own vision of the cast. These are not necessarily actors, just people that look the part to me. Besides - I always like it when someone like George Lucas hires a bunch of unknowns to do his movies. Movies are better when the people cast are the best people who could play those roles, not just the most famous ones. Katara Sokka Zuko Azula Mai Ty Lee Toph (closest I could find anyways) Feel free to disagree, or counter with your own pics. |
@Shimawa_zen: i think your zuko and mai are spot on!
|
Movies of books, t.v. or musicals don't hurt the originals. Sometimes it makes you love the originals more!

Linnea and Ketsuri666 - Thanks, I think those two are probably the best that I found too. Too bad they can't be in the movie for real. Interestingly, they were some of the easier ones to find on Google image search too. Some other ones like Ty Lee were surprisingly hard, and still not 100% what I was looking for.

i think when movie makers are doing a movie based on hit show or story they should pole the general public and maybe get some ideas from the people that know the show/story the best... although the chances of that happening are highly unlikely, it is kind of a nice thought
@Shimawa_zen: i think the link is messed up for your sokka choice ... so i didn't get to see who you picked :( |
Here is the link again for Sokka, which I hope will work better for you:
http://cache2.asset-cache.net/xc/tlp...7B48EA43DCF573 It would be nice if the public/fans had at least a voice in the casting decisions. But I especially think that the creators of the Avatar series should have had a say. While the creators aren't legally allowed to slam the movie, they have been making sure that people know that they are not responsible for the casting. I think that the creators are as disgusted with the casting as we are, and that shouldn't happen! I think that it is terrible that the creators have no say in the casting of their own story, or in the other aspects of the filming process. I wish that the creators had the final say about everything - then we would know that the movie would be great. Note to self: if I ever write a book that companies want the movie-rights for, NOBODY gets to make the movie unless they are willing to let me have a say in every part of the process! |
Shimawa_zen, the link isn't working (at least not for me).
|
Huh, works for me . . . . try this link (same picture, different location):

It is now. I guess the site was down for a little bit *shrugs*
|
Funny story, I'm not a huge fan of the series (just never really bothered), but a lot of the movie was shot in the city I live in (Reading, PA), and another good chunk of it was shot in the backyard of a friend of mine's family.
Crazy stuff. |
I'm very interested to see if the movie is good. I'm not a fan of the director's movies but I'm still going to go see if the movie comes out good or not.
|
I heard about this, and I'm not entirely sure what to feel actually...I found the cartoon quite endearing. I haven't seen the whole series, but I liked what I've seen. I'm just not sure if making a live action movie out of a cartoon like that is a good idea. The movie could end up being really good, or it could end up being terrible, and there's no way to tell other than by seeing it yourself. I guess I'll see if any of my friends go to see the movie and ask their opinion, and make my decision to either see it or not see it from that.
|
It looks okay...but i think there's alot to be concerned about; zuko doesn't have a scar, katara and sokka pulled a micheal jackson...but the scenery looks AMAZING!!! i orginally thought taylor lautner would be sokka but i guess not.. we'll jest have to see how it goes.
|
@visualxhijabi: actually Zuko really has a scar..but it wasn't emphasized much, it was just outlined with his burns..if you look closely at 1:09 of the trailer you could see it..
@topic Katara without her hair loopies? Zuko without the ponytail? Sokka without the mohawk?! and Uncle Iroh not fat?! what the hell?! how could they do that?! that's what makes those person..THEM! i'm still not into Zuko being Indian and all...xP i'm kinda excited to see Appa and Momo though..:boogie: |
Trailer looks promising, but since they announced cast of main characters I was dissappointed. I have to hear a good load of praising comments around to see the movie in theathers. I'm not sure if it'll reflect sould of original series either, trailer looked really serious D:
|
I'm so excited for this movie! The trailers look amazing and the kid who plays Aang looks just like him! I love M.Night and I can't wait for this movie. D: I know this movie will be amazing and if it isn't, I'll be very surprised. It looks promising.
