Lucky Star official English dub trailer released

Linky

And as expected, the whole subs vs dubs debate is back on. Disregard that, if that's how "bad" the American dubs are... Then I say they can keep them coming.

EDIT: Guess I should post this (may be a bit outdated):

Cast:
Konata Izumi - Wendee Lee
Tsukasa Hiiragi - Michelle Ruff
Kagami Hiiragi - Kari Wahlgren
Miyuki Takara - Karen Strassman
Akira - Stephanie Sheh
Minoru - Sam Regal
Kuroi-sensei - Kate Higgins

Release info:
- 6 volume release
- Special Editions with goodies like with Haruhi Suzumiya. No details on OST/music yet.
- No set street date at this time.
- DVD Liner notes to be included for explanations of inside jokes and references in the series.
- Original Japanese EDs will be kept

Yeah, one of the Haruhi DVDs had a teaser that announced the dub, and a pannel at a con announced the cast. And now the dub has a trailer.

Hence the DVD liners. Then again, Lucky Star has always been aimed towards the Otaku population, so...

Kadrias 02-08-2008 11:00 PM

I haven't looked at the trailer since my speakers are shot..
True but.. a lot of that stuff just doesn't transfer. o.o Unless they change things, but that would be weird, too.

suppi 02-09-2008 01:23 AM

I agree with kadrias.. there are a lot of Japanese jokes that will be pretty hard to translate. :/

Fritz Fitzgerald 02-12-2008 02:33 PM

  • Hm, I didn't expect it to get dubbed so quickly. I never knew it was. I'm all for dubs, but I'm not much of a Lucky Star fan.

Yarrian 02-12-2008 06:33 PM

I quite like Kagami's voice actor. Konata's I'm still undecided, she had good points and bad points and I didn't quite forgove her for that wierd pronunciation of manga at the start. Miyuki's made me wince.

Shiraishi Minoru should still be Shiraishi Minoru. It defeats the point otherwise XD

I probably won't watch the dub even if I do buy the DVDs (which I will do if I have the money to, I did love lucky star). I just hope they don't do what they did with pani poni dash, that was another show with obscure refrences and they decided the best way to deal with translators notes wasn't a booklet nice non-obtrusive notes at the top of the screen but pop-ups. It's awful. Oh well, I'll just have to hope for the best.

Apparently, the DVD films format only allows them to do so much, and notes at the top of the screen and subtitles at the bottom of the screen at the same time isn't something they can really do.

That's fair enough, but there has to be a less obtrusice way. The pop-ups appeared in the middle of the screen, with a sound effect, with a large border. You couldn't watch the show if you had the refrences. I mean, it's hard enough to do with pani poni dash anyway as it's full of the things but lucky star you can more or less keep track of both. Though, yeah, maybe they'll do something better for that. I should stop presuming the worst before we get there XD

I heard that some DVDs just had the explanations on the extra features. I suppose they could do like Viz did on the Evangelion Manga on the sounds, and have a small book with the list of references and the explanation, but that could make being spoiled too easy.

I like the idea of a book, so you can have it in your hand as you watch. On poni poni dash it is an extra subtitles track, so you can have the subtites without the notes, but that's annoying in itself if you think you spotted a refrence and you have to flick between subtitle tracks to check. I guess there isn't an idea way of doing it, I'm just spoiled by fansubs where it's convenient and unobtrusive.

xD Figures that I was just about to start this series and now the dub is coming out.

In regards to the jokes: dub companies are getting much better at regionalizing anime so that the humor remains. Sometimes it means different pop culture references are used, but it stays in the spirit of the original.

Manga culture or in jokes are put in pretty good. Tiny little writing with a star up in the bubble. I would like that kind. Maybe just take up an inch width space in an unobtrusive place. Oh, and replacing a reference-say a Japanese food, like onigiri, with DOUGHNUTS is not acceptable. NO! Bad Pokemon dubbers!~ *points and whispers* There is a special part of Hell reserved for the ones in charge of THAT. Like it'll hurt kids to learn alittle about foreign cultures.

Yeah, Lucky Star just came up on my radar a while ago, now it's getting dubbed xP

@Kadrias-heh, I can't have my soundcard and my modem hooked in at the same time. I'm really screwed.

Lucky Star is now available for pre-order on rightstuf. Both in regular and special edition. Pricey, isn't it? So far, nothing on the content of the special edition.

Takuto 02-24-2008 03:43 PM

Wow. I saw the video, and I am very satisfied. :D.
I think this might be one of the animes that I actually might buy. ^_^.

Rmarques 03-13-2008 11:31 PM

The merchandise included in the special edition DVDs has been confirmed:

temari_soifon_yuki 03-16-2008 04:19 AM

I... don't really like the english voices. The Japanese voice actresses sound funnier-- especially for Konata.

b e y o n d 03-17-2008 12:23 AM

  • I have to admit, Ilike the Japanese voice actresses better. But that's mainly because, since I watched the whole thing in fansubs, those are the voices I've come to associate completely with the characters.

I don't think the dub is bad at all. I like Kagami's voice and Konata's was growing on me even by the end of the trailer.

And I'll definitely be buying the DVDs. Thank goodness I don't have to worry about them coming out in Enlgand for a while, though - I still have Haruhi to buy. > ~<

The limited edition sounds really cool!

`Monox!de 03-17-2008 12:30 AM

Ooh, Stephanie Sheh? I've heard her before. She's pretty good. o wo;; She plays Mikuru in TMoHS, right? o:

I've never really gotten into Lucky Star because I'm not into anime like that, but I'll probably watch the trailer to compare the voices. >w<;; Hee hee.
