Things you DON'T like in anime/manga

We all have them, so come on, spill the beans.

Me? When the producers and the voice actor/seyuu decide to make the female characters have this super squeeky high pitched voice. Gah. Seriously, I'm fine with making them have cutsy voice, I like some of them, but gah, do you really have to make them sound like a 5 years old on crack?

And don't even get me started on characters that are nothing but a walking talking setereotype.

fiarra 02-12-2008 04:04 PM

xD All I can think about when you say high-squeaky voice is the English dub of Angelic Layer. Poor girl sounds like she's on helium.

Anyway, I don't like gratuitous swearing and/or sexual jokes or actions. (ie- Ping Pong Club) It's grating to me and I just don't think it's very funny. I also don't like toooons of violence without some sort of point or plot significance. (ie- Black Lagoon) I mean... it's badass the first few times, but for lots of episodes in a row is boring.

Yarrian 02-12-2008 06:58 PM

Like Monica Rial? She has the most terrible voice in the world. And, just looking at what she's done, she's Tamayo Kizaki in Angelic Layer. I have to admit I've only ever met her at conventions but she has the kind of voice that makes you wonder if she's got a secret supply of helium she's inhaling while you're not looking.

Personally, I dislike anime with excess fanservice. Nothing will get me to quit watching an anime faster then unnecessary fanservice. I can stand a little, but some of these shows it's just overwealming and that's not good.

And, in dubs, appart from Monica Rial, I hate where they mispronounce something or get the tone of a scene wrong. I wish the dub actors would watch the japanses version first, at least long enough for them to pick up the pronunciation of the main characters names. The Bleach dub has some terrible pronunciation in it, and while it gave us a laugh it makes it hard to take the show seriously at all.

fiarra 02-12-2008 08:40 PM

No it's actually Misaki who is voiced by Jessica Boone. I never got far enough in a dub episode to hear Tamayo. I'd just switch over the the sub track.

I agree with fanservice. Blegh.

Also, I wonder sometimes about how dub voice actors tackle their roles. Do they watch the whole series in sub format first? Or are they just told by a director what to say? Not only for pronunciation, but also for intent behind words. There's nothing worse than a dramatic scene in the original format that when dubbed, has everything sucked away because the English voice actor is using entirely the wrong tone of voice for the moment.

OMG and while I'm at it. ACCENTS. I like when they try to mimic a dialect in an anime. But it can be sooooo off. Some examples are Shizuru in Mai Hime and Leon in Kaleido Star. Shizuru has an accent... but it's not southern redneck. And yes Leon is French... but.... ugh. </rant>

*agrees with fiarra*
most english dubs sound really annoying. That's why manga's so much better; there are no voices.
I highly doubt most of the dubbed voice actors watched the subbed version of the anime. Some sound like they don't even know their character or the scene(ex: fate stay night)

fiarra 02-12-2008 08:46 PM

I actually heard that the Fate/Stay dub wasn't too terrible. Granted he'd only seen like an ep of it in dub, but at least the voices sounded reasonable. And he's a really big fan too.

i think the worst example of bad dubbing for me recently is Eureka 7. I don't think even the voice actors know wth they're going on about.

Yarrian 02-12-2008 08:49 PM

My main problem with dubs is that, as I listen to them, I can't imagine people actually spekaing like that to each other in real life. It just ruins it.

Anyway, enought about dubs. Soundtracks are another big one. If a show has an awful soundtrack I can't watch it. For me, Trinity Blood was ruined by the overly dramatic music.

Takuto 02-12-2008 08:50 PM

Kids who are in Love Triangles. (excluding Full Moon wo Sagashite. xD.) It's just so annoying. You are a child, you should be having fun and collecting pokemon cards. Love should be the last thing to worry about. xD.

Actually, I was thinking more like something among the lines of the first girl that speaks in this video.

fiarra 02-12-2008 09:06 PM

Hmm... that girl's voice sounds like pretty standard small asian girl to me...

morinae 02-12-2008 09:15 PM

Anime:

- Crappy voice actors/Dubbing - GOD! D< I just hate this! I've never been much of a Naruto fan, but I've always loved Gaara. I think his voice sounds amazing. That is...his Japanese one. It's hot, and it had this nice low quality to it that while sounding smoother than the English one, still sounded creepy enough to fit his part. <3 The English one...sounds horrible. T-T I mean, I just don't think it suits Gaara. The voice actor isn't bad or anything in this case, but it just doesn't sound the way I'd want a thirteen year old demon vessel to sound. Plus, his voice cracked too much.

- When the anime changes the storyline. This is just my least favorite thing ever. >.< It ruined FMA anime for me when they stopped going by the manga storyline...I still think the manga is better. xP

- Anime fillers - These are terrible. Whatever anyone says, the original plot of the manga is the best, with maybe a few exceptions. Fillers added in by the anime are normally horrid, out of character, and has the characters meet tons and tons of original characters. >.< I just hate it.

- I hate any characters that are stuck into the anime that weren't originally in the manga. Again, I'm a strict believer in going by canon with the manga. xP

Manga:

- Crappy art - I just hate crappy art! /headdesk/ Recently, I haven't really been minding those huge eyes that cover half the face, but that doesn't mean I like them. What really bothers me is bland art like by Yuu Watase. Especially in he series Fushigi Yugi. >.< I'm sorry to any fans of that manga, but it was terrible. The art was bad, and the storyline wasn't good either. I think her art is just very bland. There isn't much emotion, and all of the faces look the same.

- Reusing characters - I hate it when authors reuse their same characters over and over again in different manga that have nothing to do with each other. They change the names and backrounds/whatever, but the characters look exactly like other characters. >.< It's just so dumb...

- Naming characters - I'm okay with pretty original names, but if an author or manga-ka starts naming their characters to fit their personalities or hair color or whatever, that just pisses me off. >.< I'm sick of hearing characters named Sakura because they have pink hair, or someone being named Damian because they're a villan, etc. >.< Now, I realize that many manga-ka and authors do this, but it doesn't stop me from hating it.

I have more...^^; But I won't list them all out. >.< It's getting too long...

I agree with that one too. The thing I hate about filler is how futule it is. You know that at the end someone has to press the magical reset button and everyone will be back in the right state to resume the plot. I really wish shows would just take a hiatus and get themselves behind the manga plot again instead of feeling like that have to push ahead.

A manga annoyance - I hate when I can't tell characters appart. I should be able too. Fruits basket, I love it but I can't tell the characters appart by the art, I have to judge who it is by context half the time. I mean, some, yeah, but others you just can't tell and it's annoying. Other manga-ka manage to make their characters distinct, so there's not excuse.

Rinali Lee 02-12-2008 11:07 PM

Are we talking dubs or subs? Because if it's dubs...well, easy: I hate all dubs. Everything. All. Dubs. Suck. D<

Anyway.

As for pet peeves of mine in anime, I hate when they feel a need to stray from the manga and make the female lead weaker and weepier than she's supposed to be because "that's the way it goes". *coughDGRAYMANcough*

A manga pet peeve of mine is when they deliberately have those oh-so-perfect cutesy girls like Honda Tohru. I mean, she's not even that pretty. Geez.

>.>;; Yea, personal opinions here, so if anyone gets offended...uh, don't be?

Aliesier 02-13-2008 12:09 AM

My biggest pet peeves for anime/manga are:

1.When the female VAs have extremely high pitched voices. I never found it cute, just extremely annoying.

2.Casting a female VA for a male character. If the character is feminine, it's fine(especially if you are supposed to think the character is a female).

3.I loahte it when a character has a nosebleed because they are aroused. I have always found it stupid, especially when it is done excessively.

4.Male abuse. I have never found it funny when a female character for no reason.

5.Excessive fan service. I don't mind a little boobage here or a little panties there, but when the anime/manga has too much, it sickens me.

6.Overly huge boobs. This is one of the fastest way to make me stop wacthing an anime.

7.When said character with huge boobs doesn't have any back pain.

d2hiriyuu 02-13-2008 12:16 AM

I really don't like the high voice actors, or the odd english that was done for when Hyde was suppose to speak english, but he can anyway, so why did they have someone else do his voice in Last Quarter.

As for women casting as male, it is a talent and i think some of them deserve it, but not all that many.

nosebleeds are just weird, it reminds me of a only anime trait, as does the boy abuse, though I find it un realistic, but supposedly it can be great for those guys who like assertive girls.

Excessive fan service is the only thing that causes me to get up and leave anime club. it is a rarity, or I just sit at my computer and ignore the screen the best I can, but panties shots that don't make sense, or chest that is really big, or huge amounts of blood is just annoying. I mean even Elfen Lied is a huge issue for me cause of that, but at least it does have plot.

Also bugger pet peeve is actually not the large breasts, but the complains they are small when they are huge, good example of this is Slayers, it just doesn't make sense, and whatever, also bathing scenes that are random, it is a complete what the hell.

Haha. I love Angelic Layer!
The dub was okay even though they were older voice actors/actresses trying to imitate children. xD.

Well, the Japanese often use female seyuus to do the voices for children and young boys (as in, barely hitting puberty), so...

d2hiriyuu 02-13-2008 01:12 AM

That would explain it all, with the very high voices. I don't know, it is a skill there, but still.

AntiOrder 02-13-2008 01:56 AM

When they edit out bits of the plot in the dubs because it doesn't fit in with American sensibilities. Like when there's gender bending (ie escaflowne) and they just gloss over it.
And on a similar bend when completely change how a character sounds. Okay I know it won't be exactly the same in the dub, but do they have to give the more feminine sounding guys quite masculine voices.

In none dubbed stuff then fanservice is an obvious killer. However an over done clique will get me turning off just as fast.

If the female VAs can pull off sounding like a male, I don't mind. It's when you can tell that it's a female that bugs me. Like the first time I watched Shaman King subtitled, I was very dissapointed with Yoh's voice.

d2hiriyuu 02-13-2008 03:02 AM

That was more or less what I was talking about. But yeah, female voice actors playing male characters when you can tell it is female is just odd.

Javert 02-13-2008 08:29 AM

I hate excessive fanservice in anime, recap episodes, and excessive violence. :(. If an anime has too much fanservice, the odds are that I'll stop reading it. There have been cases where I've simply learned to ignore it because the plot's so good, but that doesn't happen often. As for recap episodes.. they just waste twenty five minutes of our life. We've seen all the episodes before it- why do we need them summarized? As for violence, I can deal with it to an extent, but I have to stop reading a manga, or stop watching an anime if there's too much blood. I can't stand seeing that much. >_<;. It's gross to begin with, but in excess, it's worse. :(

d2hiriyuu 02-13-2008 09:01 AM

oh yeah, recapping, it is soo annoying after seeing it the 30th episode, and not even that, But yes, recap is annoying. Too much blood is really hard on me, I start not likening the series, i had to be told it was a good series to watch even most bloody or semi bloody series.

Yarrian 02-13-2008 10:01 AM

Recap eppisodes are bad. They're only forgivable if the plot of REALLY complicated, then they serve a purpous as they stop you getting confused, and not being confused by the plot is always a good thing XD Though I haven't seen many anime with recap eppisodes, especially lately. Nana has them but they're marked with a .5 so you know it's a recap and you can avoid it if you want.

Lanackse 02-13-2008 11:40 AM

What turns me off from Anime

BAD voice acting for the dubbing. DiC are a wonderful example of that. Rini's voice sounds like nails clawing down a chalkboard which brings me to my next point.

When the NA versions rename characters to something completely different. Sometimes irony is either part of or connected to a characters name. For example Tsukino Usagi means "Rabbit of the Moon" and her least favourite food is listed as carrots. Same with Chibi Usagi, known as Chibi-Usa for short. The irony is completely lost in the translations (Serena and Rini respectively).

I think most of my problems have been covered, especially the one about oversized breasts. That is a big nono.
