Dress Codes in School

Is there a dress code at your school?
Or do you have to wear uniforms?

What is your opinion on schools limiting what kind of clothes you can wear?

At my school there was a ban on any torn or frayed clothes for a while. Currently there is a huge debate about whether clothes with the Confederate flag should be allowed or not. (lolz I live in FL, and there are groups of kids who do dress like that)

D:

I feel that schools shouldn't make a dress code that only applies to certain cliques like that! It's not fair, they should just have uniforms if they have problems like that.(even though I would hate that too!)

Sammie 03-04-2008 02:04 AM

I live in Florida too, same restrictions. I understand why people find some things offensive but some things should be allowed. Uniforms are good, well they don't look good but nobody can say "hah you're poor!" "you have bad taste in clothing!" or any of that nonsense.

Edit: Yeah, we shouldn't have to buy new clothing just because of the school!

I have a dress code at my school, we are not allowed to wear any red or blue. Not even a shade of it like pink, it's not all that bad, but sometimes I think that the type of clothing you wear represents the type of person you are. I have a lot of blue and red clothing, so I had to go shopping for a brand new wardrobe, it's not fun for me cause all you look at is clothes. I'm not into shopping, so maybe that's why. I seen many cute clothing I would really like to wear to school, but it has red on it and so it's not allowed. A lot of people told me I look good with a light blue shirt on, I can't wear it because of the school I'm in.
I believe that there shouldn't be a dress code, what people wear is how they express themselves. Other people like adults shouldn't stop us from doing so, everyone is an individual in their own way,

We don't have uniforms but we do have a dress code (no one really follows it but...). Top must meet bottom, people get away with breaking that rules every day. They sometimes get back at us if tehy can see your bra/bra strap but most people get away with. I don't think you're allowed to have an open back or a too open one anyway... No scarves or bandadnas... And that's pretty much it. Their very lenient. And not shorts or skrits that are too short.

Takabean 03-04-2008 02:06 AM

My school dress code is really stupid, we arent allowed to wear cargo shorts because they have "big pockets" so they think we could be concealing a weapon  Can't you conceal a weapon in just about anything though? why do they have to band a certain type of shorts because of pockets lol.

My school used to have uniforms, and it really wasn't that bad. Not having to worry about what to wear and just wear the uniform was alot easier.

@ Sammie - Yeah someone at my school wrote an article for our paper that basically attacked the group of kids that wore Confederate flags and called them racist. :[

@ babydvlangel - Why the color restrictions? Are they "gang-related" colors?

I personally think the way you dress is an expression of who you are. I would hate to not be allowed to dress the way I do.

Edit: What really annoys me about dress codes is when certain people that don't follow it are allowed to get away with it (because they know the staff and teachers like friends)! But like if you broke the rules, you'd be in detention or something :[

Yeah, here I don't know what caused it but everyone was passing around petitions to sign to either allow it or not allow it. So people who supported it or went against it in public got in trouble. But people who say it's racist have to learn it's not the past anymore. It's just a symbol.

Din 03-04-2008 02:14 AM

I go to a private school. We have ugly uniforms.

Wear anything but, and get an hour detention. D:
People skate the rules though.

Holiday_Special 03-04-2008 02:16 AM

I have dress code too, but it's not as stupid as all of yours :D!

<3 I have the best dress code rules so far :P

jelachu 03-04-2008 02:18 AM

@Sammie - I think if the schools want to ban that, then they have to get rid of any other kind of offensive or racist clothing! I see kids at my school with shirts that have half-naked women, or drug-related stuff and they don't get in trouble. I think that stuff is offensive! haha

Luumi 03-04-2008 02:20 AM

We have a semi-strict dress code, but no one pays any attantion to it. The "popular" girls wear outrageously low cuts shirts and short skirts and shorts. People are running around with holes in their jeans. (At my school, jean holes are considered eeeevillll) Even the cheerleading uniforms, the ones issued by the school itself, are against dress code. My point is, our dress code regulations are about as useful as a match in a lake.

Despite this, I'm glad we don't have to wear uniforms. I like to express myself through color and style.

Sammie 03-04-2008 02:22 AM

Same, I saw some kid with a completely naked woman on his pants. XD It was awkward because I sat behind him. I also see people advertising alcohol on their shirts. I sometimes wear pants with chains on them and once one of my teachers decided to kick someone out for having chains on his wallet. XD

The Mad Hatter 03-04-2008 02:24 AM

Dress code was never to bad at my school, sure their were a few annoying things but most of the time they didn't care. I think uniforms have the possibility to be a good thing if they don't suck to bad. They also are nice because they limit the whole, omfg why are you wearing that you are soooo uncool syndrome. I actually kid of wanted uniforms at my school at one point in time. The down side is they can be extremely expensive and would force people to buy new clothing. x_X;

jelachu 03-04-2008 02:24 AM

@Sammie - Yeah! They have a ban at my school on chains or studded jewelry/belts because they could be weapons... -__-

Whimsy Charlie 03-04-2008 02:33 AM

College life = No dress codes

My old school had uniforms and whenever we had a casual day we could wear pretty much anything as long as it wasn't to revealing, like no mini skirts, short shorts or tube tops. That sort of thing.

Alexive 03-04-2008 02:36 AM

They've banned things like that at the school I went to too. But I honestly think uniforms are the way to go. Hell you don't need the clothing you wear to school to show you're individuality. There are lots of different ways to express yourself. And besides D: it makes choosing what you wear in the morning really easy.

Spunkifull 03-04-2008 02:41 AM

Meh, theres a dress code, but it's not unreasonable.
Dont wear anything that shows off your naughty bits too much and your good.

jelachu 03-04-2008 02:43 AM

@Spunkifull - haha yeah, thats part of my school dress code, but some of the popular girls think it's okay to break that rule =D

SeesAWE 03-04-2008 03:22 AM

I would absolutely LOVE to have school uniforms. If they were what they look like in Japan.
Then I wouldn't have to scrounge for clothes in the morning. I mean I have some pretty amazing clothes and I do love clothes I mean I want to have my own clothing line when I grow up, but school uniforms would be sooo nice. Then no one would get made fun of for their clothes and I wouldn't have to look at the pasty white asses of all the skanks who decide it's necessary to wear 7 inch skirts. =/

jelachu 03-04-2008 03:25 AM

@SeesAWE- I agree, uniforms would work for me if they were cute ones like that. My little sister has to wear uniforms, but they are a polo shirt and khakis..they look so boring!

juniper_silver 03-04-2008 03:52 AM

I don't have a dress code anymore since I'm in college, but in high school we had one. It was very reasonable though and I never had any problems with it. If anything I thought they were too lenient with some people...there were some girls that wore teeny tiny skirts all the time and always got away with it, even though the dress code said fingertip length(which I don't find ridiculous).

ReiyukaE 03-04-2008 04:00 AM

We had a basic dresscode for a Catholic school, at my high school. They were very lenient with it in general. One of the rules being no spaghetti-strap tops or anything too short. The short rule was always monitored closely, but the straps were usually allowed when the weather was really hot at the end of Spring.

I think a minimal should be applied; you know, nothing racist or too nude or whatnot. But like you mentioned, nothing that excludes a certain "crowd".

My dresscode in high school wasn't too bad. We could pretty much wear anything as long as it wasn't drug-related, etc. and your stomach couldn't be out. The only thing I didn't like is that you couldn't wear tank tops. It got really hot.

In middle school, they wouldn't let me wear a spiked collar because they thought I'd trip, fall, and hurt someone with it. :? That was pretty lame.

dragoness129 03-04-2008 04:11 AM

I went to Hampton Park Christian School from kindergarten to sixth grade. We had to wear dresses or skirts everyday. It sucked.
In Travelers Rest High, there are a lot of stupid dress codes in place. They do not allow chains (OMG, I love dangly chains!), non-human colored hair (this really ticks me off because I want dark purple hair!), no flip flops, no pajamas (stupid rule!), no spaghetti straps, no slippers, no clothing that drags on the floor (I like wearing long pants, thank you very much. Especially since I am short, so the pants are naturally long. >_<), no skirts shorter than mid-thigh (OMG - they will still get you if you have leggings on underneath them! So stupid!)
There are some others, but those are the main annoyances.
