The strangest thing I ever remember eating was during some tour of foreign foods thing in elementary school. The food was some green jello looking substance, but it tasted like... I don't even know. It was horrible. I felt like I was eating vomit, or something. Eating it also gave me a severe headache and sinus pain. I will never forget that taste or sensation.

hmm... exotic...it's hard to tell what counts as exotic any more. It used to be that Susi and Curry were exotic, but they are becoming more main stream... same with things like leache nuts ...I grew up in one of those shcools that had a work culture potluck dinner... (we brougth Jello for desert) ... and there was a little bit of every thing there from lamb stew to tofu and every other dish you can imagine. My aunt also has a pineapple brocoli salad she likes... but exotic... hmm that's hard to place now...

hmmm dose pocky count as exotic food? :P probably not.. but it's good.

I think the oddest thing I ate was either buffalo testes or Guinea pig. Keep in mind I didn't know what either one was until after I started eating them so it was kind of odd finding out what I was really eating. I guess it's common for them to eat guinea pig in South America and that's where I was at the time. The buffalo balls was when I was out west. I still have no idea why anyone would knowingly eat that.

I think you probably had takoyaki (literally means fried or baked octopus), it's a really popular Japanese food.
It isn't something I've personally tried, but it looks delicious.

durians
they are very stinky, smelly fruits that are covered in spikes

Bombshell 03-17-2008 06:35 PM

I don't know if it counts but I've had deer jerky before and it was pretty good. Also had deer chili before which was also tasty. Relatives of mine go deer hunting once a year and we happened to visit 'round when they had some of it and those are a couple things they made.

Me too, the most flat of them all! My chem teacher went around the world though and brought back some pretty interesting things to try. I can't remeber what they were called, but they were tasty.

I like sushi though, ; - ).

Frikadel.

Its a treat where I live. Kind of looks like a sausage, but there are all sorts of urban legends about the ingredients. It appears to contain coweyes and porkbrains and more of that kind of stuff.

Easther_Bunni 03-19-2008 04:29 AM

Frikadel... sounds familiar. Where's it from?

Also, I know a lot of people mentioned Durian. I've tried durian icecream before. The icecream place was amazing, it had crazy flavors like saffron, spicy mango, pear blue cheese, green tea, vinegar....
Best icecream place ever.

Mine would have to be a thing we have over in the UK called Winkles. My grandad used to eat them all the time, and there a type of shell fish I think. You have to pick them out with a tooth pick, or fork and eat them. They usally come in Vinager or brine, there ermm not to nice. D:

I enjoy trying different foods that people might consider strange or exotic, depending on their culture.

Interesting things I have eaten: buffalo meat (it was in a burger), alligator meat, jellyfish, squid, eel, and shark meat.

celestial_maiden1112 03-19-2008 09:02 PM

The only food that was interesting to me at the when I tried it was sushi. Really I was like um raw fish eww but I really started to like it when I first had it.

BebeMae 03-19-2008 09:29 PM

I'd say the most exotic thing I've eaten in Sea Urchin. I went to Montreal with my cousin and we went to this amazing restaurant called Tatami. We ordered a few different varieties of sushi and one was Sea Urchin. It was...well...let's just say, It's an acquired taste! But at least I can say I tried it.

Of the strange things I've eaten that I actually liked: Pig Tongue, Frog Legs and Alligator...and to agree with the cliche, Frog Legs DO taste like Chicken! LOL

Han'iurami 03-19-2008 10:22 PM

The most exotic food i've ever had would have to be Hazelnut Pavlova, a cold dessert that is rather sweet and surprisingly had a bit of wine vinegar in it as well as ground hazelnuts.Quite delicious but it really took me a moment to register the unique taste,i've never had anything like it

Starshine 03-19-2008 10:37 PM

the weirdest things I've tried are probably snake and turtle, the former is all bony and has very little meat, but taste alright. Turtle does not taste good at all, I recommend that no one else try it.

I've also tried Kangaroo steak, its much tougher than beef steaks, but not inedible XD

LOL yeah that's about as exotic as I've gotten too aside deer meat. I had some shrimp sushi and some of the veggie kind which both turned out pleasantly good.

Ojo 03-20-2008 01:43 AM

Uhm =]
I've had ox tail if that counts as exotic

Project_yuki 03-20-2008 02:06 AM

Pickled and curried 'coon feet. It was at an old Thai restaurant.

The feet were really weird... Hot and sticky... And bleck!

Needless to say, I downed a bowl of strawberry gelato after that...Now that I type that...I'm wondering why they had gelato at all... Thai restaurant selling Italian desserts?

OPALNYX 03-20-2008 05:38 AM

The most exotic thing that i have ever eaten was venison (ie Bambi) when i was on holidays.

It had a strong flavor, like a combination of beef and lamb.

It was not to bad.

BloodStainedLips 03-20-2008 10:11 PM

Thats really funny. I make Halawa =)
Im actually Egyptian! I love making and eating grape leaves. It's also a middle eastern dish

What it basically is small grape leaves stuffed with rice, parsley, you can add meat, salt, pepper. I steam them and sprinkle lemon juice over them. They taste WONDERFUL. My favorite food on earth.

They are also called Dolmas over the internet when i've searched for them.

There are a lot of strange foods here in my country. If I were to describe it, a lot of Americans would tend to throw up. But it’s okay for they just see it that way because they’re not used to eating it.

I wouldn’t call it exotic for we do have exotic foods. I will discuss some of those as well.

The most popular yucky-for-Americans meal in my country is the “Dinuguan”. It has the root word “Dugo” which means “Blood”. This is because you get the bloo of the pork and cook it in it. When cooked, the blood turns black. Since it’s black food, Americans rarely like it. And since it’s full of pork and fat, the Japanese don’t like it either even if it’s black. It taste good especially with “Puto” or a white bread made of rice. It tastes the best when eaten with green pepper.

We also have another food called “Bagoong” which can be made of fish or shrimp. It has an awful smell but tastes good. It’s a kind of gooey sauce where food such as the green mango is dipped in.

But if you were to talk about real exotic foods, people here eat all sorts of animals. Though I haven’t really tried it myself. Some ate snakes, rats, dogs, cats, frogs and even beetles. They say the dogs have meat that brings heat to the body. Cats have soft, clean meat. Frogs tastes like chicken as they say. Beetles are a little crunchy as they say. I have no idea as to the snakes and rats.

Alright before you throw up. Consider this thought, you’re only thinking of it as yucky before you grow up in the world where people don’t eat it. But if you’re in a community where eating these things are okay then you won’t frown at it too much.

hmmm...mine aren't too interesting.... i've had raw octopi....that was pretty good...rubbery though. grasshopper isnt bad, and chocolate covered maggots are good. as are ants. i'm always open to trying new stuff, I want to try cockroaches and snake someday.

hatsushi 03-28-2008 06:33 AM
